They don't know. None of those questions have answers, it's the same as LOST, they were making the plot up as they went along.

As the most recent interview stated, there's been multiple attempts to make Ep3, all with different ideas for the plot and those answers. If we do get something it'll be unconnected to what the original authors of those plot points thought of. That's life.

While HL1 story is longer and is an awesome game, I absolutely loved opposing force as a kid and I reinstall it once a year. Definitely worth checking out as is Blue Shift, the stories compliment each other nicely.
