>have had the original DoD in Steam library for years >finally decide to try it, why not >holy fuck this game fucking rocks >sum total of 30 players online, most servers are empty or bot servers >DoD Source apparently completely different, and we all know nothing can match the instant reg of HL1 modded games (see CSGO vs CS 1.6) >try Day of Infamy, it's similarly dead and is doing the "early access" meme, plus it doesn't feel the same at all
Kill me, or what is a suitable replacement that isn't dead?
just end it, m8. you missed out on the best ww2 shooter
Colton Price
there are no replacements just be glad people still play goldsource games
Gabriel Mitchell
It's basically TFC levels of dead
Jose Lopez
I played this when the beta was first released. It was a lot of fun and DoD:S just isn't the same.
>you will never camp Omaha as the Germans and spawn kill fuckboys on the beach
Just kill me now
Ayden King
God damned... those Rat maps were nostalgia worth.
Luke Cox
You missed it OP settle for Source or just face that it's gone
Jackson Thomas
day of defeat source is good and lots of people still play. I recommend the 24/7 avalanche server.
Ryder Evans
>muh source hitreg
Jesus Christ you're a faggot
Charles Rivera
>you will never play HL1 deathmatch again >you will never play TFC again >you will never play Action Half Life again >you will never play The Specialists Again >you will never play Tour of Duty again >you will never play Battlegrounds again >you will never play Vampire Slayer again >you will never play Pirates, Vikings, and Knights again >you will never play Day of Defeat again >you will never play NeoTokyo again >you will never play Natural Selection again >you will never play Zombie Panic again
PVK and ZP have source versions (and NeoTokyo maybe?), NS2 exists, but they're all basically dead except for CS1.6 plus the goldsource versions were all superior. The wonky ass vehicle physics were the best
Also, I forgot Science & Industry. I could only play that in spurts. And Sven Co-op which is still around
Blake Ortiz
>you will never search for HL1 mods to play with your friend again
Thomas Ross
it's a shame you only played it now. Back before it got itself a physical copy it had bleeding and patching yourself up and shit.
Zachary Flores
>tfw pretty much all these mods were still alive just 6 years back and they're ghost towns now
Gabriel Anderson
Is Days of War gonna be our last hope?
Parker Parker
some source servers have that.
Jackson Diaz
no, that'll be shit
just play source, its good
Thomas Bell
>2002 >wow, look at all these great free mods. so much creativity from fans; HL has the best community. surely vidya will only get better from here. >2017 >mfw
I'm still a bit perplexed why the HL community seemed to be so deflated when HL2 was released. There really weren't many new mods outside of single player made and the multiplayer mods were pretty much just ports of HL1 mods.
Logan Peterson
>valve charges for poorly made retextures in games like CS:GO now when you could get full model and animation replacements before
Brody Perry
How dead/active is Dod: Source?
Hunter Flores
>you will never camp Omaha as the Germans and spawn kill fuckboys on the beach
I was THE BEST at sniping on omaha beach. Nothing beats the thrill of dropping five yankees in a row as they desperately try to sprint up the beach. The only thing that comes close was witching teams and counter sniping the germans every time they tried to pop their head up.
Too bad that there will never be another game with sniping mechanics as hardcore as early DoD. It's pretty much inconceivable to make casuals manually compensate for scope sway, let alone automatic descoping if you moved too quickly.
Pretty fucking annoying but if I remember right, at least they only charged $10 for CSS and DoD:S.
Asher Ramirez
i remember this map called "hill", and it was absolutely fucking insane. like the size of a battlefield map but in OG source, with about a million different combat zones.
chugged like a cunt and had a habit of crashing and shit just clipping through it, but that was the time. extreme ambition and extreme jank.
i miss it.
Parker Ortiz
>going base german rifleman and sticking my face 6 inches from the screen and still picking off fools
Was lots of fun. Got 108 kills on one game of caen by boosting up from one of the side alley doors to a roof in the main courtyard.
Leo Hernandez
been playing since the old beta. One of my fav games ever. That game has in my opinion some of best weapon balance in any multiplayer.
>he wasnt a karwhore >he didnt snipe with FG42 scoped >he didnt hold angles with the BAR and ruin everyones day
Luke Lopez
More opinions on this pls
Brody Myers
>No game will ever be allowed to have a gun as OP as the Kar98, ever again.
Still hurts.
Joshua Thomas
Days of War is coming out in a few days OP it supposed to be like DoD
Ian Campbell
>we will never experience anything like the HL1 days
Levi Sullivan
>CS:GO custom maps will never be fun again >Instead say hello to endless COMPETITEEV wannabe maps with MUH REELISM brb kysing myself
Wyatt Butler
But DoD is shit user
Hudson Nguyen
wont get one for a couple of days when you can play it. myself and a mate will be trying it
Sebastian Miller
>DoD:S "APPARENTLY" completely different So you didn't even fucking play it. It's fun.
Wyatt Bell
I imagine that DoD started in Counter-Strike games with everyone having an AWP
Camden Price
go play your fucking weeb shit you faggot
Noah Thomas
>you will never play The Specialists Again
Jordan Smith
Do people not play Double Action Bugaloo or something? I thought that got pretty popular
>he didn't play Allies on Avalanche >he didn't choose assault >he didn't smoke the tower entrance and rush to their back line >he didn't punch five guys including the snipers in the window room to death >he didn't then camp the apartments right at their spawn unleashing butthurt and keks
that was the good shit. Played on the Gooch Assassins server years ago. I was a Gooch at one point. Handle was Addrock. Good times.
Jack Davis
HL1 never ceases to amaze me. Both the Goldsrc and Source engines are beautiful things
Oh shit, I remember the soccer game now. I think I played it for 30 minutes before uninstalling. I just wasn't a fan of soccer.
Juan Flores
>not having The Specialists on that list
user....
Brayden Edwards
Still a third person and first person shooter, having angle dependent melee moves is just a small mechanic
Aiden Anderson
it's shit the specialists has more maps, weapons, characters, melee options, etc. And i don't how but it looks better.
Kayden Hernandez
It was great fun though. I don't remember why but they removed the matrix high jumping and shit. Then it just fell off the face of the earth.
Owen Anderson
There was one particular version, I think it was 3.0, where team leadership changed and development ran the game into the ground. All I know is it was internal drama and the game just started getting worse.
>playing they hunger coop with some random dudes scariest multiplayer experience I've ever had
John Barnes
What is rising storm filled my blood niche after graduating from dod
David Butler
Neotokyo hurts the most. I only put like 60hrs in, but at the time there was always 2-3 populated servers and more traffic on weekends. Now it's always dead outside of the occasional organized event. There's no replacement for it, no other games really match the pacing or style. The GitS fps looks shitty.
Christopher Rivera
>spent days of time browsing custom model websites for new cool weapons and player models and even more days running around ts_lobby feeling like a bad-ass in my trenchcoat and akimbo pistols >did this and CS every day with my best friend
Matthew Martin
>complaining that Day of Infamy is in early access
DoD was in development for years before a playable build was released and it took even longer for it to be fleshed out.
Daniel Watson
>then you'd get big mods that'd change the game in a fun and exciting way >now you just get retextures >at most you get meme shit like "Standing around in an Elevator: The Game"
Jacob Nelson
Early access sucks the life out of playerbases after they hear it's shit. Once it actually gets good there's no one to play anymore
Lucas Johnson
>Rally half life game
I knew about the Soccer game but holy shit
Luke Morris
Do you literally just stand in an elevator? Is the point of the game that everyone plays it ironically and just makes elevator jokes? I don't understand
Tyler Hill
>using the Dante skin without knowing he was from DmC he looked cool as fuck
Jason Myers
same senpai i can never forgive valve for sv_pure and monetizing skins
Jayden Gomez
Nah, here's the twist. You stand in an elevator and, get this, spooky things happen.
There's also "Stand around in a movie theater that's showing Youtube Videos: The Game".
Juan Robinson
Oh it's one of those games. That's still pretty dumb.
also >There's also "Stand around in a movie theater that's showing Youtube Videos: The Game". nigga gmod tower was super fun
Cameron Morales
Fucking most of gmod's customs are shit. >rp servers >theater servers >elevator servers >most TTT servers are autistic admins that are power tripping and will ban you on the singular rule break. RIP Gmod.
Logan Perez
You get the same experience just watching youtube videos and sharing links with people over your IM of choice.
Ryder Hughes
last time I went on Brainbread was years ago. There were 3 servers and usually 2 or 3 people on a good day. Still enjoy it though
Leo Baker
goddamn goldsrc is powerful
Asher Moore
man, some sandbox servers are fun. >join server with addon that let's you put spawn a huge screen and stream youtube videos >stream this youtu.be/IftQC3dUbXQ >kids start screaming and gather around to watch >everyone starts copying me and putting screens everywhere with weird shit, nazi propaganda videos, loud music, minecraft gameplays, etc that was kinda fun
Carter Jenkins
oh god. love this game so much
Lucas Hall
>You will never play Hostile-Intent ever again with a decent player population.
Sebastian Murphy
do you play with texture filtering on or off Sup Forums?
Brandon White
Remember when it just came out on steam? Those where the fucking days man
Elijah Harris
god. I know all these games but so few did I ever play. Dont forget the classic:
Scientist Slaughterhouse
Jack Allen
Yeah there is a source neotokyo, but idk if anyone ever played it
Loved that mod. Anyone here remember GHOST OPS: The Avalon Project? I don't think it was ever finished but the weapon animations were used for a bunch of custom content for CS/CSS
Gavin Evans
Neotokyo Source got an official release on steam and had a surge of popularity for a little bit. Honestly, I wanted to like the game, but bunnyhopping kinda ruined it for me. I feel like it'd work better as a slower-paced SWAT-style shooter, but instead you just get lights crossing the entire map not even a minute into the round and 2/3 classes are rendered mostly irrelevant.
Carson Lewis
But you don't, silly goose. That's why they made it
Kayden Brooks
>fund our Kickstarter, look at this pre-pre-alpha gameplay! >pledge $0.01 to be in credits, $500 to be made an actual character in the game >wow, thanks for the Reddit gold! We're $2 million past our goal >developers get money for an unfinished game, spends 5 years in alpha >can safely abandon it once whatever theme the game is is no longer a trend
Kayden Diaz
I heard Valve downgraded the audio quality for HL and Opfor. Is this true?
Luis Thomas
>fund our Kickstarter, look at this pre-pre-alpha gameplay! >pledge $0.01 to be in credits, $500 to become a Unobtanium Elder God Backer Tier and an actual character in the game >wow, thanks for the Reddit gold! We're $2 million past our goal >spends half a decade in alpha >year 6 hotfix: using item X still crashes your game and characters still clip through doors, but it's in alpha after all >but prefab spooling has been increased by 2 and grass is now shinier than before >can safely abandon it once whatever theme the game is is no longer a trend >backers can't complain because they got to play the game anyways
William Turner
That one was a good one. Had a blast with it.
Jaxon Gray
people played this game?
William Martin
dude. theater is the most fun thing ever
Bentley Powell
hmmm not sure if the Gold Src engine has gotten more powerful overtime or if people just got better at texturing
William Carter
I mean there's better particle effects and stuff. And it looks like they put in ragdoll physics for dead bodies
I do agree that the actual models still look bad
Jackson Taylor
Honestly I'd rather mess around with SMOD Tactical
Christian Myers
Same thing happened back in the day. There was an eastern front hl1 mod that released a super-early alpha build to the public that was so broken that the negative publicity killed the project. This was before the first beta of dod, I think they were trying to take away some attention from dod, which already had a big hype train. Release shit and deal with the consequences.
Honestly, HI was the best tactical-style shooter I've ever played. It had a sense of tension and deliberateness that hasn't been matched. It's a shame it came out towards the end of hl1's life cycle.
Noah Robinson
>this whole section
Liam Brooks
You missed it, it was the best shooter around back then, i played nonstop for like 6 years, no shooter will ever be as fun as DoD was. i remember getting instantly banned if i didn't enter with my tag on or forced myself to play like shit on purpose (obviously i simply could not get into servers where nobody knew me since i would be banned in no time)
Those were the good times, Counter Strike is just not as good and feels extremely unbalanced (besides the guns feeling like shit and the random spray patterns)/
sadly arena shooters are too elitist to get into now, i used to be good at them long time ago but since i havent played any of them for so long getting back into them is just hell (and they are kind of dead so the few servers still alive are always full and they will kick you if you are shit giving you no chance to get back into them)
Natural Selection hurts the most. I spend thousands of hours into this game, witnessed how amazing it was and also witnessed its slow decline with the inclusion of combat mode that, while fun, thinned the playerbase quite significantly on regular maps. Then NS2 came out and it is very good, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original and the inclusion of an Alien commander made things too symmetrical while the original had perfect balance and radically different playstyles and strategies.
