You better take that back before I get mad.
Because Takahashi wrote games he couldn't finish on budget or time.
Which is why Saga is one game spread over three and still feels unfinished.
Ran out of time & money but didn't want to cut the story, so fuck it, cram all that shit in there.
i liked the second disc because it became a visual novel, all of the xenogames should have been visual novels
Combine Takahashi's super huge ambition and Square giving this project a very limited budget and you get Xenogears.
If he had more money it could've been the perfect jrpg.
that pic makes me sad
they really don't make 'em like they used to
Because budget got stolen.
FF8(or 9, whichever came out around that time), really, the budget got cut and went into that.
I can't believe I used to think this guy was cool.
Could it be possible that Saga could of been all of Episode 1 technically, or am I just a retard?
Xenosaga can't take place in the same universe because of the structure of the universe it takes place in and the way the Zohar functions and how it was found
Wasn't there a young Fei-looking kid in the saga games? Could've been him or a clone or some shit... who knows. Too bad they couldn't link the games together too closely because of legal reasons.
MY GIRLFRIEND IS DEEEEEEEAAADD, I'M GONNA BE GRIMDARK REEEEEEE
>He doesn't think Grahf is cool
user...do you even desire the power?
Because Squaresoft figured Final Fantasy 8 deserved more of a budget and production time.
Abel in Xenosaga is the way humans perceive the U-DO in the lower domain.
Abel in Xenogears was a random kid that survived the Eldridge crash.
Saga is a reboot/prequel to Xenogears Episode I. Events are changed but there are plenty of allusions to the galactic war hinted at in XGPW.
>Abel in Xenosaga is the way humans perceive the U-DO in the lower domain.
I literally haven't played the game in 10+ yrs and have no idea what you just said, but I'll take your word for it.
>Too bad they couldn't link the games together too closely because of legal reasons.
The way I see it is kinda like how I see the Gundam franchise.
The entries aren't explicitly linked, but the staff behind them occasionally throw nods in there to the main timeline (some of those nods are more than that though so they might as well be confirming it)
Anyway in Saga's case I think it's both connected and not connected.
It really depends on what the player wants it to be, if you want to make those connections do so, but the story still stands as its own.
It would be kinda depressing if Saga was connected though because that would mean Deus must've wiped out most of civilization for them to go "ship it to the ends of the galaxy"
budget axed for FF8
man fuck that game
FFVIII needed more money
U-DO is the Wave Existence, it's the only thing that isn't affected by Zarathustra's reset function. Abel's appearance is really just a nod to Xenogears but it's still neat.
Xenoblade also has a Wave Existence, though it's not autistic like fucking Abel.
seriously, if it was good I could excuse it
>Xenoblade also has a Wave Existence, though it's not autistic like fucking Abel.
explain further
what the fuck was his problem?
And yet it lives on in glory for all time, while Xenogears is doomed to fade with our memories of it.
Xenogears was actually pitched and considered to be Final Fantasy 8, but Square or Sakaguchi or whoever squashed it because it was way too out there (which it was), but let Takahashi develop it as a separate game. Then they ganked his budget and half his staff to finish the real Final Fantasy 8 and he was left taking the gameplay out of the second part of his game leaving a fuck ton of story and text and like two dungeons.
driven insane by zohar
That doesn't make sense, that theory just doesn't work because of Abel (saga) and what happened when Abel (gears) met the WE
he is talking about Alvis
It was a prototype plot for Final Fantasy 7, actually. That's why Cloud shares some traits with Fei, it's a holdover. It may also be why Cloud references Xenogears while Mako poisoned, just as a nod.
But yes, they considered the plot too heavy on Christian imagery/mythos and "dark themes" to be allowed in their major cash cow.
They did indeed gut its budget to gloss up Final Fantasy 8, though.
I've only played a bit of Xenosaga 1. But from what I understand Xenogears, the Xenosaga games, and the Xenoblade games are all made by the same group of people right? But some shit keeps on happening that makes them unable to finish whatever the hell they're trying to do?
this behind the scenes history is depressing to read, but at least the game managed to see the light of day
Whoops, didn't mean to imply they were the same Wave Existence, they function in the same way but U-DO regularly seems to interfere with the Lower Domain while XG WE wanted to just chill out.
And then they fucked.
>PS1 game
There's your explanation. Should've waited until the PS2 released so they could fit it all into one disc without sacrificing gameplay or graphics.
Then again, look at Xenogears...
>Final Fantasy 8
It was VII, there's tons of elements the two games still share
>Jenova = Deus
>Fei & Cloud both have amnesia and fake knowing their pasts and who they are
>Elly & Aeris had ties to a mysterious higher power in their world, the wave existence/zohar and lifestream respectively
>Elly and Aeris both were key to saving the planet in the finale
>They both lived with adopted mothers
>Both games had a section where each character goes into their mind to sort things out.
>sephiroth clones = mutants
>Sephiroth = Ramsus, Both are a main antagonist born through genetic manipulation, and are being manipulated by the real villain
>Shinra = Solaris
I could go on, but that's enough for now
>8
>Glory
It was the first bad Final Fantasy (2 not withstanding)
Im playing this game for the first time. Just finished the sewer levil with Rico. Does the game pick up? Its very slow paced aside from the explosive action moments with Fei going full Shinji god mode
...
it just works
it's slow but then it suddenly goes faster and faster until the game literally narrates what happened, what they thought and how they felt
i hate that entire section. it gets slightly better for a bit, then worse, then picks up again, then you go to disc 2 where the game tells you what happened instead of you playing the game.
I know about disc 2 and the chair, but things do pick up drastically? I'm having trouble sticking to it even though I'm really liking it because its pacing is so slow.
There are moments of action. It never really picks up overall.
you're in the slowest seciton, enjoy the arena battles, one of the funnest minigames in a jrpg imo.
That whole place will be boring for you unless you like exploring around and talking to npcs.
It gets slightly better once you get access to the other levels of the town.
It picks up a bit after you leave, it's not breakneck until you get to disc 2, but the later half of disc 1 will pass by you with a bit more pep in its step.
alright. glad to know that was the slowest section. I liked the pacing of the earlier parts enough, so I'm glad the worst is behind me.
His soundtrack is fucking cool
Just finished the game a week ago, what a game. Hoping it gets a full remake someday.
What other good JRPGs have I missed for the PSX?
and yet you didn't post it.
>Hoping it gets a full remake someday.
I'm sorry user
If you haven't tried FFVII get to it, it's a classic.
Otherwise Suikoden's pretty good, and Grandia is too if you like stuff that has a childish atmosphere.
Grandia, Legend of Dragoon, Suikoden, Legend of Mana, Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Cross. Tactics Ogre, Chrono Cross, Breath of Fire, SaGa Frontier, Legend of Legaia.. this list could take a while.
I would even recommend the Lunar remakes for PSX.
>I'm sorry user
No, fuck you it's going to happen.
I loved Suikoden I, on to 2 now. Grandia too but I got the undub.
Thanks user, if you got any more feel free to dump a list on me.
Is the PSP Lunar Silver Star Harmony a good place to start?
Vagrant Story is great if you're willing to cope with a bit of complexity.
>he doesn't like the cheesy early-2000s anime voice acting
It also helps if you don't mind some fairly homoerotic clothing choices.
It is a great game, though.
>Gadwin's Secret Move! Dragon King Slice!
I think that is permanently drilled into my brain.
...
...
...
You'll never blossom with that attitude.
>Shit tier jrpg for fedora tippers
kek
Stay mad, moron
Something like that, yeah. I'm not sure if Xenoblade had any blatant Xenogears/saga references in it, though.

loooool
I really wanted the part where Elly and Emeralda team up to go do dungeons.
How about you read about it instead?
It just seems like after trying video games so much maybe they should try a different form of media. Like a book or something. I enjoyed what of XS1 I played for sure, but from what I heard of the other games the whole setting, story, etc seem really interesting and I'd hate to see the whole thing never get out there because they take so damn long the guy/s in charge of the story kicks the bucket.
>I have two personalities.. Nicest man with amnesia.. and twisted fucking psychopath
Isnt he basically anime darth vader?
Yeah, I agree. Just anything to continue the great story.
and Obi Wan
game had a great OST
I still feel this is the best psx rpg to date, imo
>8
>glory
if you mean constantly shat on sure
the xeno games are now the most revered jRPGs
Speaking of which I never did finish XS1. I remember some big space station of some kind showing up and the party going there to fight . Was that the final dungeon or did I still have a bit to go? If the former I think I never finished because I spent all my time using that VR thing to visit earlier areas trying to get everything I missed. I don't think I have that save any more, even if I did I probably wouldn't remember shit about the plot. I do remember liking the game though.
Yeah, Merkaba or whatever.
yes, that is the final area for episode 1.
>Replaying Xenosaga 1 after 14 years because I never played 2 or 3 and 3 is apparently good according to these threads
>Completely forgot this game had its own CCG
... and mech simulator
It's almost like I never even played these before I have absolutely no recollection of them at all.
the only thing I remember about Xenosaga was the robot, and Shion I think supposed to be a throwback to Citan
Money isn't the problem just see how the Trails/Kiseki games have so much better world building, stories, characters and NPCs while still being fun to play games with the fraction of the budget of any Xeno game, the guy simply doesn't know how to implement his ideas and still make a fun and interesting game, either you have a game with so many cutscenes that they overshadow the gameplay like XenoSaga (i think the opening section of XS1 has like 20 minutes of gameplay and an hour of cutscenes!) or good games with simple stories like Xenoblade.
Alright. I still got the game and a working PS2. Maybe I'll restart it here soon.
I suddenly remembered this other space station that was basically a big city/small country in and of itself. I think it even had a sunny beach and stuff. And there were these guys you could bring robot parts to and they'd put it together for you and from what I remember it looked like some 50s robot toy. I don't think I ever got all the parts though. The hell was the reward for that anyway, you just get some cash from the guys or were you able to use the thing in some way?
Don't you mean U-DO?
>Trails/Kiseki games have so much better world building, stories, characters and NPCs while still being fun to play games with the fraction of the budget of any Xeno game
They also came out almost a decade later on pc and not on the first consumer consoles to attempt things like 3d jrpgs.
Xenogears had a lot to worry about besides its story elements.
Figuring how to make things work on the PSX's hardware which was still pretty time consuming at the time took a lot of resources out of the team.
Trails has the benefit of coming out on PC and having a lot of the work sorted out for it.
I mean by the early 2000s people had user-friendly tons of tools free to use to do whatever, but back in the 5th gen days it was a bit harder.
I'm remembering more and more as the game goes on.
I just think it's weird that opening digital booster packs for cards was a thing and I didn't even remember it being a thing but I remembered it in FF8/9. I guess it just came at a time when every JRPG had a card get stapled onto it so it just faded into the ether.
>"They also came out a decade later on PC"
Dude what?
"First Chapter was first released in Japan for Microsoft Windows in 2004, and later ported to the PlayStation Portable in 2006"

Is xenosaga good?I'm currently doing xenogears right now and thinking about doing all xeno games chronogically.
I keep hearing here that disc 2 of xenogears suck,I really don't know how it can take such a violent turn, because I'm having quite a blast with disc one.
Also I like the mecha designs.
I was worried too, but it wasn' that bad user. Stick with it if the story and characters hook you.
Wow I thought they came out later.
It still holds true for kiseki though, and trails in the sky still has 6 years on gears.
I'm currently replaying it myself but I remember liking Xenosaga, not as much as I liked Xenogears but it did improve in some areas. I also remember Sup Forums and just about everyone I knew telling me Xenosaga II was fucking terrible so I never played it or Xenosaga III.
Disc 2 on Xenogears gets a bad rap, obviously it sucks that you don't actually got to adventure around the world and in dungeons like in disc 1 but disc 2 has all the crazy shit that stuck with me through the years.
You do regain full control of the party towards the end though, so you can do the remaining side quests.
this shit was wack as fuck
no her brother is a throwback to citan
XS1 is outdated as hell
XS2 is mediocre
XS3 is genuinely good
It depresses me to know that we will never see the rest of the planned series .
What's almost as bad is Mitsuda dropped one of the best soundtracks you'll ever hear on us and we won't get more of that.
But now he doesn't have an ecxuse he has Nintendo's support as a first party dev and all the time he needs after the success of XB, one thing they really need to change is the character desings my god those faces are awful you'd think after 14 years they would improve that at least.
I have a sealed copy of this game. However, I've never played it before and was wondering if it would be worth opening to play?
well he seems to have a bigger role in XC2, the track we hear form the XC2 trailer at the end sounds like his work
unless it's just the ending song like XC1
>He's literally you but twisted by the loss of his waifu
>Because of what he's doing, he keeps inadvertently putting you in situations where you nearly lose THE SAME FUCKING WAIFU
What's a Boozer again?
Saga was complete shit regardless.
