Well might as well start with Half-Life. Along with the original Doom, it is considered one of the most influential first person shooters ever.

Very different. For instance you don't aim with your mouse, that's how old it is. Of course you should try it considering its legacy. But if you can't digest just how damn old it is then you could try the Brutal Doom version which is a more modern iteration of the same game.

stalker, but despite what anyone tells you, play it with a mod first. not one too crazy, but enough to give you a genuine experience without the "blah blah you need to know what changes bullshit"

No, not complete. If you want to take a mod at all (you don't have to), check out the general at /vg/, they offer a great starter pack and are very helpful in case you encounter any problems during installation.

That being said, I also recommend STALKER.
