Many PS1 games didn't even support dual analog control. And before that, many kinds of gameplay that would only really work well in 3D couldn't and didn't exist.
While not always true, game companies also typically see the problems with their previous games and remove flaws for sequels. An obvious and newer example of this is Nier Automata, which is leaps and bounds ahead of Nier in terms of combat quality. Another example might be Super Smash Bros. Melee compared to Smash 4. Melee was significantly less balanced than 4, thus resulting in very few viable characters with Fox at the top. And thanks to higher processing power, more RAM, and general greater graphical capabilities, games can now be a lot larger than they used to be, thus allowing more content to players.

Modern video games are generally better than older video games.
IV is mechanically better than every other Metal Gear game. It gives the player more options as to what they can do and how one can go about getting across the map and completing an objective. You had more weapons you could use, wider areas to explore, and a general lack of linearity that was present in MGS2 especially.

Linearity was never a bad thing, I don't see that point. Despite being mechanically surperior in movement and weapon uses, the constant bombardment of cutscenes slices up the feeling of consistency the player has to their own playthrough. Playing MGS1 I felt like I was traversing a facility, MGS4 felt like I was moving till the game stopped me.

These games have also always been 50% story as well, and MGS4 went beyond retarded in what it did to characters already established and new characters they introduced. There are better people than I who could explain everything about this but I think it should be plain to see 4 fell behind in capturing player wonder and enjoyment compared to the previous games.

As for your first and overarching point, few game developers actually do this and more and more companies are using these new capabilities with the hardware to take more shortcuts and sacrifice content for quicker release times and marketing budgets. GOod games ARE still being made, I just think that instead of the games industry improving we've switched from one kind of bad to another, from not enough large games being made to too many being made.

QTE is a bad design decision, but not all modern games have QTEs and some times are little more than a couple of annoying cutscenes.

Saying QTEs ruined modern games is like saying thanks to dragon quest, QTEs ruined all arcade games.

I wasn't trying to troll or get (You)'s user. I genuinely think vidya has generally gotten better as time has passed. That's not to say there aren't great older titles. Just that we're at a state where many games are taking advantages of the lack of restraints had back then.

And QTE isn't the only sin of modern video games. The vast majority look bad and just play bad. And I'm not talking about shovelware. For example I see Kingdom Hearts thrown around a lot. That game looks like shit and plays like shit.

I'm really not. It's rather difficult to make a 10 ten list for a generation in 7th or 8th gen that includes no QTE.

I'm not blind to the fact that new games overall aren't marketed to me. That doesn't mean I can't be critical about them. It just means I'm that much more critical about them. It's very hard for me just to get over the fact that when I want to play a game on a console I have to download a patch and navigate a menu.

Then every recommendation I get turns out to be hot garbage. Peaple tell me to stay away from the top selling games. I ask for a recommendation and I get something like Vanquish or w/e it's called. They tell me it's like Gunvalkyrie. Game plays like shit and is horribly unpolished. It's mediocre to ok at best.

And this just repeats itself.

I would suggest you games I like but I'm a man of simple tastes and generally don't buy new games either, but I have found some that I do enjoy.
