What is nostalgic about it?
Nostalgia about what? It's the only game of its type I'd ever played, closest thing would be something like SMTII or one of the Touhous.
Explain
The graphics?
The "Mother clone" argument?
I never played this game nor do I care about it, but I have no idea why people are so hellbent on making threads about how they dislike it without even so much as an argument to kick off a discussion.
So would pic related
Or Resi VII
Or even [insert favorite game here]
Also Undertale hate threads are stupid and gay and you should stop being a faggot
/thread
Wrong, there's no nostalgia involved, idiot. The game would be nothing without the music.
If it will make u feel better bought it and refunded on steam. I can see why people would like it. But it just happens to be i do not like it. I mean its alright, but its not super meat boy so i cant really enjoy thr slow pace of it.
I like dota, shivel knight, hyper light drifta etc etc
It's a 2D indie RPG. Of course it's not super meat boy.
Well i dont like that desu
It would be nothing without nostalgia, autism and furfags.
Prove me wrong.
Pretty much. I fell for the charm, jokes, artstyle and combat, but that music is what holds the whole thing together.
I liked the ride in general. Don't care for how autistic most of the fandom created around it though.
>'game'
How is it not a game?
I've never understood shitposting.
Either
a) you feel so strongly about this that you created a thread aimed at inciting hateful discussion
b) you're so bored that you created a thread aimed at inciting hateful discussion
In any case, grow up and get a life. It'll do you some good.
Yeah, same. I only really care for the music now. It's not a game I see myself wanting to replay.
I honestly can't understand why the game gets so much hate here, I don't even think most of them even played the game.
did you'd ever does play the game but gone after you wasnt like to play? I'm am never happened to play that game but i done hope this would doest happen.
But it's shit now too. You're saying there could be something worse than that autistic screeching music and toddler-level artwork?
Are you just trying to make a new "has anyone really been far as decided to use even go want to do look more like"
no
I loved the game and I have literally never played or experienced anything related to the Mother franchise save for Ness being in Smash Brothers
>the game would be nothing without these 3 nebulous terms that don't actually mean anything
>most of it's fanbase is literally underaged and never played the games Undertale took inpiration from
>it would be nothing without nostalgia
But I liked it and I've never played Earthbound
Idiot.
>nostalgia
Game intentionally tried to be like an old super Nintendo game.
>autism
Literally the main thing drawing anyone to this game.
>furfag
Mentally crippled autists attracted to animals that somewhat resemble humans (most of the characters). This is proven by all of porn drawn of the characters, and further proven by the fact that none of them were intended to be sexualized. Just like bronies masturbating to cartoon ponies.
"I can't stand the fact that a bunch of critics and reviewers rated the game as one of 2015's best and I will not rest until everyone despises it as much as I do"
I for one really enjoyed the shitty graphics.
I wish they had actually tried to do something with it like how OFF did but unforutnately it looks like if Toby could have helped it he would have made it look more like Chrono Trigger and less like a shitty Earthbound fangame.
Also the music is what holds it together, not anything else. Don't even pretend that that's not what is the case.

Toby Fox is a fucking master of leitmotifs. It carries the tone so hard it smashed through any layer of defensive cynicism I put up. You feel like a motherfucking hero at the end of Pacifist runs. It's crazy, because the game sets you up on a rather weird roller coaster of emotions from the beginning but never really goes full-drive until the very end. There's never any electric guitars until the final boss (besides Mettaton in his intro sequence for like two seconds), and, if you're paying any attention, you understand that some of the instruments are themed.
The dreemurr fights all prominently feature simple waveform synths and violins specifically, for example (Papyrus also has violins, but they're more whimsical; less "serious")
But no, you're a big fucking hero that pulls your soul back together every two seconds through your massive drive to save what you love, and you have the accompaniment of raging electric guitars, because THAT'S THE INSTRUMENT OF A MOTHERFUCKING HERO, DAMN IT.
This is the secret trick of Sup Forums.
If you want to discuss a game and post something nice about it you get 5 replies before the thread dies.
If you post a hateful message about it people jump on the chance to list the good and bad points of the game resulting in a fibrant thread where you can discuss the game.
Now you also understand "Sup Forums hates everything" meme. It's just an illusion because people are more likely to react to negative messages. Meaning that the dominant thread making strategy is to make negative threads.
I've found telling people they're idiots for not playing "insert game here" also works.
Nothing of this is news to me, user. I didn't adress Sup Forums as a whole, I adressed OP specifically.
It's not a clone, it's a spinoff where you get to fight Ness who has turned into a skeleton.
>nostalgia for last month when you played it because replaying the story that you already know would be boring
true
There is no nostalgia.
The game would be no where without the MEMES
And you know it's the truth.
Name one [1] meme
>Game intentionally tried to be like an old super Nintendo game.
Lots of games do this. It works for the aesthetic it was trying to achieve
>Literally the main thing drawing anyone to this game.
That's not a definition
>Porn
user literally everything gets porn
>calling a game a "game" so everyone can see that you're a cool dude with hot opinions
The fanbase.
>I for one really enjoyed the shitty graphics.
>skeletons
>goats
>spaghetti
Fucking Katy herself couldn't be this random.
Do you know why i hate Undertale? cause it's the best game ever made. the graphics look like they were drawn by a four year old, with the talents of Pablo Picasso in his prime. Which is what i would of said if i like the graphics, which i do. Not. Narratively this game is a paragon of interactive storytelling every choice you make weighs on your conscience because every connection you make with the characters feels organic, and thats why im giving this game a five out of five... billion. it fucking sucks.
>skeletons
>goats
>spaghetti
All of those exist in real life too so I guess we're living in a meme world
reminder that it's here

>we're living in a meme world
at last you understand
Why is DOOM in there?
>they don't consider all video games art
Casuals
The game did so many things so well. The dialogue is geniunely funny. The game can be genuinely creepy, too. The game takes game mechanics and UI elements and uses them as story devices so that it talks directly to the player. And because of this direct interaction, people end up feeling very attached to the characters. Then, the boss fights are quite very well designed (unlike the levels and puzzles, to be honest) and fun to play.
But yes. The music is what ties everything together. Leitmotifs make people associate music with characters and story points. The boss songs are perfectly paced for their fights. The music is what people will remember after playing the game. It's what makes the game truly memorable.
The strong, flat colors and wild jumps in quality from garbage to surprisingly okay (like the Snowdin shopkeep). It contributes to the surreal feelings you get from the game.
Not like I don't wish the artstyle was more consistent or, at least, deliberate. I feel like if Toby had another million dollars to make the game, it would graphically look very, very different.
As someone who's never played Mother and the only really "old" games I've played were Super Mario Bros., Metroid and Pokémon, I digress.
>everything on this list past Unfinished Swan
:(
I barely played any Earthbound and it's one of my Top 10s so where is this nostalgic factor? The only nostalgia this game gives me is the want to play it again for the first time - this coming from somebody who went in wanting to hate it.
>BioShock
>The game is regarded as an important work of art due to its immersive atmosphere, compelling storytelling and the narrative deconstruction of linear gameplay.
What?
I'm legitimately not shitting on it but Christ almighty that "description" could be applied to literally hundreds of games.
Reading those development pages made me lose respect for Undertale. So many of the good things in that game happened by accident or were changed when other people told Toby what he was doing was stupid.
I completely disagree and I've never played the game. I own it and plan to soon though.
I can almost guarantee the majority of the fanbase never played Earthbound or any Mother games.
Same with FNAF, most of the fanbase probably doesn't even regularly play horror games.
What if the next game is an Ace Attorney crossover?
same as
>Undertale
>holy shieeet, choices m-matter guys!
>(Release Date: 15 Sep, 2015)
It's always about where you saw it first.
The early Undertale threads were amazing. Minimal levels of autism and people were more interested in the game itself, like pointing out the differences when you kill certain characters or not. I had just finished Lisa and Mother 3 too so I was in a "Mother-like" rush.
Overnight it seemed to have exploded in popularity for all the wrong reasons, I hate that I can't say I like Undertale now without looking like a massive faggot.
Can you give some examples?
Most of what I saw was Toby rejecting competent sprites by good sprite artists, or asking them to "make it look worse" to achieve a more amateurish look.
Toby's original idea for Papyrus was for him to literally, as in actually, be a fedora wearing man-child whose favorite show was some faux version of "My Little Pony". I can't remember exactly how Toby realized or was told that was dumb as hell but that's the best example.
There's a lot of small stuff too, can't think of the rest but it seemed like most of the ideas he had came from him not wanting to figure something out or because he was fucking around.
It would still be a friend simulator without the nostalgia, and that's half of what makes it appeal to autists
>deconstruction
this is the fucking worst meaningless buzzword
that would have been awful. Why would you prefer that to the actual Papyrus? I love that motherfucker.
The game is a perfect newfag material, (re)introducing 100+1 nice things in one small dense package, and there's also nothing wrong with flinging a turd at every publicly salivating furfag you see because parading fetishes is a disgusting underage behavior.
member when before the full version came out Sup Forums would have quiet threads about the demo every now and then?
You mean this? Seems he pretty quickly realized how bad an idea it was.
Or are you saying you'd actually prefer this?
Can you restate your point with fewer buzzwords, please?
Educational game for new players or casual players with short attention span.
I never played anything like that before and I loved it
undertale and most modern indie games are terrible. they have shit gameplay, awful meme writing, and use pixel art as an excuse for their games to have bad graphics. some indie games like a game with a kitty 2 and noitu love 2 are great, but most of them are shit.
/thread
Anybody who grew up on classics wouldn't play this turd
Music is fruity loops trash. No real instrument on site
>skeletons are a meme
I remember
fuck
No, this game would be nothing without youtube. Kids fucking love this shit, because their favorite youtuber did a play through.
I was born in 1998 and I liked it
It doesn't matter if it's "old".
People just don't have enough skill and time to make pixel-art like on the left one. And there's reason why pixel-art was pretty much abandoned - it's too expensive.
Look at Owlboy - people were autistic enough to polish it for years, and in the end they just forgot to make the game actually fun.
I grew up on the classics and you're dead wrong
Hell, if anything I appreciated the fact that someone else who loved them as much as I did bothered to make a new experience for me
>people born in 1998 are now at least 18
fucking time going forward all the time
Cringe or bait. Can't tell.
Either way that has been disproved by the creator who basicly called MatPat a retard for that.
This thread is about Undertale, not Five Memes at Furries. Undertale already had a following before the game came out from the demo and it was in Greenlight for years.
I know this to be true, yet I refuse to do so. Is it too much to ask for a nice thread about a game you like?
>OP BTFO by everyone of Sup Forums, the biggest Undertale hate group.
If this does not prove how stupid you are, I don't know what does.
Mother 3 is the only great one on there.
T'was a different time.
It is this way because there is nothing to say if everyone agrees and knows everything. You either need to discuss in a way that incentives people to throw out their opinion, or find a topic that people can do their part figuring out info.
If you look at FF15 threads, they start negative but usually disolve into a positive thread of people working together to figure out the plot, or why it had a rough launch.
...
GOD I wish Flowey was still scary. He was totally a missed opportunity to have him fuck with you in subtle ways that didn't involve him just simply following you everywhere.
I wish he popped up after every main boss battle to laugh in your face and taunt you about some other bullshit that you didn't do. I also wish he acted more like the White Face entity I was envisioning him as since the demo (since he fucks with the game manual in there) and actually messed with shit on your computer to unsettle you.
underage?
>none of them were intended to be sexualized
so sorry
The main reason the final game didn't have all the file altering shit from the demo is because the demo was made in Game Maker 8 while the final game was made in Game Maker Studio. Studio runs in a sandbox which significantly hampers your ability to do anything outside of it, so he dropped that concept altogether.
That's a shame. Just think of all the bullshit he could have pulled.
He was literally paid to be put in, and even then was hidden in the depths where no one can find him in a normal playthrough.
Which is a real shame. Toby looked like he was going to pull some real shenanigans with it.
In my opinion he should lay off on developing another game and live off the autismbux he raked in off the thing and focus on learning how to actually program so he can do the shit that he actually wants to. Mettaton was supposed to actually save your "essay" somewhere on your hard drive but he couldn't get it to work cuz gamemaker es shite
There was hidden cool flowey stuff all over the game, but most players will genuinely just miss it after the ruins. Like, returning to talk to some of those last echo flowers in waterfall, literally almost no one found that one.
I think Toby wanted to avoid being overbearing with Flowey, especially since he's established to be somewhat of a meta character. Meta can get tiring.
>New game
>Nostalgia
Awww dude people only play Resident Evil 7 because of nostalgia.
IIRC Undertale was originally supposed to be an Earthbound hack. The battles were in black and white because reducing the palette was the only way to make the custom battle system work, or something like that. I think he realized very early on that it wasn't possible to do what he wanted.
Yeah but it's really popular with kids somehow
>Meta can get tiring.
so let's have the final bosses (flowey and asriel, incidentally both are glorified cutscenes) literally be "WOAH THE POWER TO SAVE AND RELOAD HUH SURE IS VIDEOGAME HERE"
and then genocide is like "WOW CHARA IS LITERALLY YOU, YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO DO THIS HAHA BUT IT'S A GAME SO YOU WANT TO KILL EVERYONE FOR NO REASON HAHA"
Nope, it was his own game, he wanted to make a game that just incorporated all the tropes and cool mechanics that he thought were cool from games he'd played and put them all in one. The battle system was finished first and then he started building the rest of the game around it.
