No

You literally have to bomb random walls.

I don't think anyone really beat it without consulting nintendo power or asking for tips and tricks in the 80s.

I think so

people often forget that it came with a useful manual and a map that explicitly told you where the first 4 dungeons were and placed a ? at points of interest

here is a link to the original materials that came with the game if you bought it new

I think the game still holds up well its one of my favorites

beat yes, 100% probably not

Im playing it on my 2DS at the moment this guy has some good walkthroughs.

>not playing randomized zelda

for what purpose?

Yes, but you will probably miss some items like the rings.

It is actually pretty easy and short.

Not completely random. Caves will only ever be found on flat, horizontal stretches of cliff face. There will only be one possible cave or staircase per screen, and never both. Really not that hard to find them once you realize what looks "suspicious."

I've played it on and off for the last five years trying to prove that you can.

Can't find the 8th dungeon currently. Took me years to find the seventh, and then I beat it in five minutes once I found it.

its funny how after playing for a bit you can just kind of tell where there will be a bombable place

>Can't find the 8th dungeon
most people find that one way before they are ready for it

>years

Are you legit retarded? Beat it in a few weeks as a kid.

If you bought the game new, then absolutely.

The manual had so many hints that it was almost a guide by itself (except that bit about loud noise & Pols Voice - fucking Famicom mics...). Then came the map, that detailed a good 2/3 of Hyrule along with points of interest in those areas. Then came the additional little tips pamphlet that spelled out the first two levels and gave you huge hints about the rest. Plus, several screens in the Overworld basically pointed you in the correct direction to go, or had obvious features begging to be burned or blown-up.

Now, if you're playing it for the first time without these things? It'll be a bit more difficult without the manual tips and such. But, if you approach the game in a logical manner then you'll be fine.

The Second Quest will fuck you up, and I am not so proud to hide that I wasn't able to best that until the NES Game Atlas came out.

It's a very short game with moderate challenge to its enemies and a fair amount of challenge learning the rules to its hidden areas.
^This guy speaks wisdom.

I actually tried this experiment with a guild mate.

They couldn't find dungeons 5 and 7 but got nearly everything else.

>couldn't find 5 and 7
what part of go up up up the mountain ahead and there's secrets where fairies don't live did he not understand?
it couldnt be any clearer

Can it be played/beaten in a reasonable amount of time without a guide?

my older brother used graphing paper to map out the whole overworld and all the dungeons. this game was intense when it came out

I'm not playing it 24/7 user.

Fuck you, 7 is impossible to find unless you're a dirty cheater.

Definitely easier than Zelda. It's not like you need all the secret stuff to beat it.

Sure, it's just a really fucking tedious game.

How can you possibly miss the 8th dungeon, it's location is so blatant that it's impossible to miss it.

No idea.

For those of us that played it at the time it came with a map. Also so many were talking about it, if you were stuck a friend may have figure it out already so you traded notes. Also you get the in zone of the game a bit and getting a feeling for what you can break open and where stuff should be.

Someone now without a guide would actually have less to use then we did back then simply because back everyone had the game and talked about it so much.

Yes but only with luck. My cousin got stuck on shit all the time in this game and he was only ever able to progress when he gave up completely and let me play and I would just randomly find things by accident.

>"there is a secret where fairies don't live"
>"surely this one single pond without a fairy has NOTHING suspicious about it!"
>"too bad I don't know how to fucking experiment with all my sub-items on this non-suspicious screen with a non-suspicious lake that's non-suspiciously missing fairies"

The only problem is that so many areas look extremely similar so its super easy to get lost, especially with no map.

Its an easier game besides that though.

I've done it in one fucking day. Don't be a scrub.

Yes. The game world isn't very big. You just try everything. Bomb the shit out of rocks, burn bushes and use your whistle anywhere suspicious. That's about it. The dungeons are self explanatory.

Nothing tells you you are supposed to bomb walls in the first place.

Just like nothing tells you to burn bushes, though at least the candle doesn't have limited charges that require grinding to refill.

youve been trained over the years to do this sort of thing but at the time it was a pretty obtuse mechanic

depends on what a reasonable amount of time is for you

yeah, i found it cool when i got a boxed copy last nov at my flea market, it had all the OG documentation in it almost all brand new

too bad the box is a little beat up or you would think i could time travel

how old are you grampa?

Not at all, no. I figured it out in under a minute. This was when I was 10, back in '87.

Thank you for letting me know this is a thing

Only for Ameridumbs, Japanese manual guides you through the first dungeon and that's pretty much it.

Isn't the candle once per screen or something? I remember having problems with it.

i imagine you heard about the trick through the grapevine at school but in your mind you figured it out on your own

the blue candle is once per screen the red is no limit

Hindsight is 20/20, bro. I ended up finding it accidentally, and then five minutes later it was back to having no idea where to go.

Now I'm leaving the thread to avoid spoilers for a 30 year old game.

Spirit Tracks was a fun game

link killed gannon

I beat it, not 100%, when I was 5. You can do it user

What? I beat it and the master quest as a child, and I didn't have Nintendo Power, nor was I allowed to call tip lines. It didn't really help, but I physically drew a detailed map of the overworld too.
