Video game mechanics that trigger you

>time limit

>Don't pick the right dialog options
>Companion gets pissy and leaves the party forever

or

>Keep stealing things
>Companion gets pissy and leaves the party forever

It's the only thing I don't miss from old crpgs.

>scripted sections that you have no control over
>doors magically unlocking after you do something

So pretty much the entirety of RE7 that I've played so far.

>go through the doors and reach the checkpoint
>doors are now shut forever
>forgot to fully explore the previous room

QTE's, goddamn either the whole fucking game is that or they throw that shit in with no fucking warning so you end up dying 2 or 3 times and that's if they dont change up the sequence or pull that you pressed at the wrong moment bullshit

Don't fuckin' remind me, man.

I'm about to refund over this shit and the stuttering I get when looking around corners and general retardation regarding not being able to aim after using steam overlay.

I'm fucking used to RE being scripted as all fuck, but at least in RE1-6 I got the illusion of control. I can't suspend my disbelief here because the game's constantly reminding me that nothing I do matters.

>I wish my actions didn't have consequences
Fuck you

>time limits
>durability
>cutscene that prevents you from backtracking
>traps you have to intentionally trigger to get hidden treasure
>maps where you can't reveal the corners because shit is in the way
>characters don't gain xp if they're dead at the end of combat
>game records how many times you die/run away

>enemies that steal items in jrpgs

I love lost Odyssey but this shit is annoying

>npc moves at a speed between your walking and running
>have to stop then move then stop then move over and over like a fucking spastic

>Punishing me because I want to roleplay a certain way

>wanting to roleplay a certain way
>WOW DUDE HOW COME CHARACTERS REACT TO THE ROLE IM PLAYING?

???

>missable content in a billion hour long rpg

just end my life pls

>game displays how many times you have died/run/reset

Fuck that shit, I've been kicked out of L4D2 games because they checked my stats, I didn't even know my ex roomate kept playing and getting killed on normal and quitting like a bitch he is.

Also

>alternate endings
>alternate endings that can only be seen if you replay the whole game

That's cancer

>5 minutes should be plenty, Let's go!

>move camera in driving game
>it resets to a predetermined spot

Rank / medal based on completion time in puzzle games. I can't have fun if it forces me to basically either analyze/memorize for minutes before restarting and rushing, or throwing in trial and error to try to be lucky

>minecraft

>roleplay one way
>the game rewards you
>roleplay another way
>the game punishes you
there's a difference between 'characters reacting' and the game actively discouraging a playstyle

>continuing main story makes previous side quests unavailable

>i want to be a thief and a crook and let everyone in my party know it
>i also want to be the best person ever and everyone should like me the way i truly am

you sound like a female.
if you want to play a thief and crook than be prepared to play the game alone in a stealthy way instead of having a party in case your thievery doesn't work.

>i want to shit and fart at the lunch table with my friends
>WHAT NOBODY WANTS TO COME TO MY DINNER PARTY?

>Wow why doesn't this lawful good character condone me when I mugged some elderly ? I like paladins but they don't want to associate with my necromancer ass
>Way to go game, discouraging me from a playstyle
Enjoy your "roleplaying"

I don't like companions, they always do stupid shit so I'd rather be alone.

>Boss is only vulnerable for one attack during his cycle
>His attack cycle takes 3 minutes to loop back around to that attack
>You must do this several times and if you fuck it up you have to wait through the entire cycle all over again

STOP

>There are people who don't want to play Monster Hunter because you usually have a 50 minute time limit in the majority of quests
>Which is very usually more than enough anyway

>weapon/armor durability
This has never improved a game, ever. It becomes a pointless minor resource drain (souls series) or a constant annoyance to keep your equipment at optimal condition (fallout 3)

>arbitrarily difficult combos

well if you roleplay as a scumbag people will react to you as if you're a scumbag.. its not the games fault if that discourages you. Go play in a safe space

>MH3U
>Ominous Cry quest
>Constantly hit the Savage Jho for almost 50 minutes with a fully upgraded Slime Hammer
>Not enough damage to capture him and time runs out

I know, it's my fault, I refuse to play on multi, but holy shit killing the Jho solo is hard.

...

Backtracking for items that are weaker than the shit you have equipped.

Necromancers are not necessarily evil nowadays.

...

>unusual amount of black fellows in discriminatory war period

love revisionism

>story

haha

fucking bitch

You don't know what "roleplaying" is.

if you want a game where people are okay with you being a fucking dick then play Tyranny or Fable

>weapon degradation

>Game reacts to the way you're role playing
>Somehow this is a bad thing

True but why the hell would you play a --- good necromancer ?

t. soulsfag

Absolute time limits
I can't fuck around for as long as I want without going back to Clock Town in Majora's Mask
couldn't get into Pikmin because of the 30 day thing, I wanted to look around at everything but felt rushed
Couldn't feel comfortable in Fallout, I knew about the time limit and it was just a constant nag knowing that I should be doing the main quest.

but The Sims have a finite life span and that's fine with me

If there is no character besides the paladin, he totally has a point. If the choice is "be good, get char" vs "be evil, get nothing", it certainly punishes the player.

Luigi's Mansion Dark moon also was ruined becuse this shit mechanic.

Is ok to put it on a plataformer like mario but an adventure game like Zelda is outright stupid.

We're talking about game mechanics user

>guy who made the complaint complained that good characters stopped hanging out with him because he was constantly stealing

that's not "be good, get char, be evil, get nothing"
its
>be good
>good people like you
>be bad
>steal shit
>good people dont want to assosciate with you

yeah nah you're not getting punished by the game.. you're stealing items and decent people won't want to be with you, period. You get items.

Gun jams in Stalker due to low durability are pretty fun.

Free slave labour without pesky adventurers trying to kick my ass.

That's fair, but what about the other point about dialog options? I absolutely agree on the stealing part.

Magical scientist. I hate how that archetype is really only in steampunk shit. Necromancy would advance medicine by millennia.

if they balance the game so that one moral is far better than the other, that blows. But in my experience, it rarely happens.

even if it does, RPGs are piss easy.

I remember clicking through Chrono Trigger's textboxes only for Magus to fuck off. Sure you can still complete the game, but you will be missing out.

I don't know, you'll probably end up with a shallow experience if you want it to be balanced for every class.
Take VtMB for example, different classes offers different playstyle, and playing Nosferatu is far more restrictive.
Sure it's unbalanced, compared to a Ventrue or a Brujah you'll have a hard time but you can still complete the game.

>time limit
>in a maze
>with backtracking
>enemies can knock you down or stun loop you
they laugh when they hit you.

Nobody wants to be punished for their actions. If they wanted to, they would just fucking do it in real life.

...

>enrage timer
Come up with a better way to manage boss fights

>stunloop
It's no use

>Reversed Controls

I love Beyond Good and Evil but fuck you for doing that on the last boss, that's cheap.

HERE'S A FUCKING IDEA

FIND A COMPANION WHO LIKES STEALING AND STOP TAKING MORALFAGS WITH YOU

>Time limit starts
>A cutscene plays that shaves off a couple seconds before you actually gain control

oh boy, treasure hunting stages

>weapon durability

>Game gives you lots of ammo for a weapon, but the weapon itself.

>water level

escort missions

>ice level

That usually only happens when you miss a secret that gets you the weapon early.

>can run out of air
>tight narrow passages with electric seaweed or eels
>timed

>autosaving on linear path games

what the fuck happened to fixed save points? It's not challenging at all when you're playing RE and it saves everything

>game erases your save.

>doors magically unlocking after you do something

Yeah this shit kind of bugs me just cause it does not make sense. I don't remember what game it was but to unlock the next door to progress I had move some chess pieces to certain spots in a certain order. Now this didn't open up some secret compartment in the table the chess board was on with the key inside. The door just unlocked.

Only happens if you're really really dumb.

>Rubberband AI

>playing FFVII
>grinding AP in the Ancient City
>some little shit steals Cid's ultimate weapon and runs away
>I haven't saved in ten hours

Didn't pick the game back up for a week I was so upset.

>holding forward in driving game
>turn the camera but don't turn the stick you use to steer the car
>car starts turning

>would you like me to repeat myself?
>cursor is hovering over yes by default

>a.i respond to input

You can get him in new game plus. Hell if you get him the first time, second playthrough kill him, then third playthrough get him again he'd keep any levels he got the first playthrough even.

>final boss
>does not use any of the mechanics you have learned over the course of the game
>instead uses an entirely new one

or

>final boss changes the very genre of the game and whatever stats you've gotten over the course of the game don't matter now

We've managed to avoid drowning.

why can't there be a game where i'm a good necromancer traveling the world with a group of benevolent skeletons?
>helping out small villages by having your skeletons do things like repair buildings
>or protecting the villagers from raiders
>only taking in corpses that are willingly given to you by the townspeople
>your skeletons can be decorated with flowers and paint

What game?

This is a good one. Trillions final form was more annoying than challenging.

Auto scrolling in platformers

On the flipside, guns in Stalker don't usually break by just looking at them

Drakengard 3 if I'm not mistaken.

>Game makes a big deal about morality and player choices
>Game still has a defined best ending

What's more ridiculous is there are save rooms AND checkpoints. I get caught by Maguerite in the "Mia" video like 8 times, but I always died and respawned at checkpoints so I got the trophy for making it through without getting caught. Capcom, you jackasses

I know that now, sure, but back then I was kind of peeved.

you ruined Dead Rising you fucking queer

Me being dumb doesn't make for it.

>game encourages replaying it
>have to watch the cutscenes again
pic related

unskippable, long-ass tutorial level

Asynchronous ranking system.
Think Hitman Absolution.

>You get the sword of unlimited power crafted by the ancients
>The next town sells a sword with better stats

>There is no secret early weapon

MGS4

>FPS game
>Enemies have hitscan weapons
