Never played any of these, what's the spiel?

sluggishly walk around virtual japanese city awkwardly asking people weird questions and following your notes until you get into either a QTE or a wicked but clumsy fight sequence
spend time playing arcade games, drinking soda, buying egg capsules and cat food and batteries for your tape player (and tapes) while sifting through your kitchen cabinets
love every second of it

So if I liked Deadly Premonition, I would like Shenmue?

Officially it's all about looking for the man that murdered your father to get vengeance but in practice it's "Japanese Slum Simulator '87"

ehh, it kind of stands apart from most other games, there have been plenty that took inspiration from shenmue or were influenced by its mechanics, but none have really committed to the point where i can say that if you liked it, you would like shenmue

this is going to sound retarded but basically shenmue is more of an experience than a game that you play normally, its like an interactive exploration of what they thought the future of gaming could be like
you really have to try it to understand it
i dont think even watching an LP on youtube would work, because it breaks the progression up into a sequence of chunks with defined beginnings and endings
actually playing shenmue is like having a weird daydream that lasts for as long as you feel like playing
there are no chapters, you dont get victory screens when you do something right, theres almost nothing there to indicate your progression except for your notebook getting progressively fuller with random details that may or may not even end up being important

tl;dr just give it a shot, its worth a try but approach it with no expectations and an open mind

Do you know where I can find some sailors

Have you seen a black car?

LD RIGHT HERE PLAYA. DA FUCK THIS CHING KONG GREASY MOTHER FUCKA DOING HERE.

It's kind of got the same janky charm, but that's mostly due to when it was made, not how.

Was actually a bit disappointed as people talked about this game being really good. It's hardly even a game though.

FUNNY BEAR

Looking for sailors?

Yeah, see ya.

1 v 70 me faggot

Try not playing games 10+ years after their prime, kiddo.

Yes, you will. Deadly Premonition is one of my favourite post-2000 games and I loved Shenmue.

The game is the same and even GTAIII had it beat. I would've been disappointed regardless, faggo.

Shenmue was released first, small fry.

Do you know where Fuku-san might be tonight

>"this one again?"
>"Aughmnumnum sluuurp"
th-thanks Oney

Hmm, one game one hundred yen.

It's funny to me that you think that

I don't see if I have anything to lose.

My name is Lo Wang...

This is the best description I ever saw of the game

BROOOWN BRICKS

>have a copy of shenmue 2 for Xbox

>no way to play it

suffering

Does Shenmue 3 honestly have any chance of being good like the other 2 games?

I mean Yu Suzuki has a spotless track record, but he no longer has AM2 to back him up, and I fear the current status of open world games might influence him.

as long as ryu gets that kickass machine gun arm and punches every tree along the way it'll be dope

don't forget the zero gravity moon battle

I'm really worried

>its like an interactive exploration of what they thought the future of gaming could be like
>you really have to try it to understand it

Interesting way of putting it. I can kind of see what you mean. It was pretty groundbreaking for the time. The problem is Dreamcast was on borrowed time.

I have played 1 and 2 long ago. 2 was the Xbox version.

can't wait for the national forklift racing Grand Prix

the most overrated shitgame of all time

>I fear the current status of open world games might influence him.
If the game has a quest system I'm out.

It will make back it's money, but I dunno about beyond that.

Don't even fucking say it
Now there's a 0.00001% chance you'll meme it into reality

Euros got Shenmue 2 DC, I'm still salty even though I played most of my friends burnt copy

I got the impression that he wanted the game to do unique things and not simply copy other modern open-world games.

>I have the one blade
>...and I have the other

I really hope they finish their playthrough.

I was just looking at some space harrier because seeing this thread reminded me of space harrier. Which is funny since a lot of what made Shenmue good was actually screwing around rather than finding lan di. I used to like playing space harrier within shenmue. I also had space harrier on turbografx 16

w8 shenmue 3 is a thing? I thought it was turned into some chinko machine game?

Here's your dong lee right here

*Unzips dick

I played this for the first time recently, and holy shit it's like autism in video game form.

It seems so boring and stupid, but for some reason I was hooked until the end, and couldn't get enough.

I think it brought back happy memories of walking around a town and waiting for events in Majora's Mask.

haha

you're so cute

You either get Shenmue or you don't.

Shenmue is one of those games you can't explain to someone and can't show them gameplay of for them to get. They have to play it to understand it.

Sadly for a lot of people, they don't get it. They just think "huh, whats so fun about going around a house and opening draws, and asking people where I can find some dude named Charlie?"

I recently got my friend into Shenmue and he loved every minute of it. He finished Shenmue 2 a few weeks ago.
