what is undertale?
i don't think anybody disagrees
LISA was better
Not really much to say. It was a good game with good music and solid gameplay. Also bullshit furry self inserts, that were mostly decent with one being great.
if the game wasn't viraled so much on Sup Forums it might have had a better reception and would have been a universally accepted game, but it was so fucking annoying to see thread after thread of "sans" with no real constructive op's
I really enjoyed this game and to this day I still can't believe how well bullet-hell mechanics work in a rpg.
the game was fun
the community that formed around it made me want to shoot myself in the head with a shotgun
>toby used a bullet hell system because it was the simplest battle system to make
>even the traditional turn based battle systems of many rpgs were still based in stats and underlying mathematics that had a tiny layer of complexity
So if Toby did the battle system the simplest way possible, what would be the second simplest system? I'll steal your best suggestions and make millions. Thanks in advance.
MMORPG with DMC combat.
Sprite action, eg 2D Zeldas (even that shitty sidescroller). Damage is an occasional hitbox, collision optional. Can say you're "skill-based" and drop every non-essential stat. Hell, drill it down to one-hit to kill and be killed and you'll be called super-hardcore while also skipping any real stats.
>You have encountered an enemy
>Push X to beat it
I like games with actual mechanics and less handholding. I guess it just isn't for me.
qte battle system

UNDYNE
Wrong
Yes, it was. Not "best fucking game ever holy shit", but good.
Too bad the fanbase is absolute fucking cancer. I actually feel kinda bad for Toby, this is exactly what he wanted to avoid.
That baby-faced wimp isn't Undyne tho.
This is Undyne.
Toby is partially responsible for this whole "Undertale fandom is shitty".
Most people get annoyed at Undertale players, when they shout at lets players or twitch streamers about playing 'the wrong route", aka the neutral route. But it's Toby's fault for not telegraphing the pre-requisites for Pacifist Ending early in the game.
It was better as a demo
It was fun, but there's nothing to discuss anymore. If Toby really wanted to capitalize on the hype, he would have released hardmode. If he does decide to do so, it won't be popular now.
It's dead, Jim.
IIRC, the game basically pleads you early on not to kill anything...
That's not it. The problem is that the fanbase shouts at them for "playing the game wrong", when they're doing it exactly how it was intended. You're SUPPOSED to play the game like a regular rpg killing some monsters the first time around. If you play it pacifist from the start the EXP/LOVE twist at the end has zero impact.
It's a game that, in my eyes, was ruined by streamer culture and it's annoying fans, much like any game released nowadays. Games are meant to be played, explored, and beat to completion, but in this age of just watching streamers, so much of Undertale was lost because of those people spoiling each route, and not letting players find out shit for themselves.
Streamers are also to blame, since repeat playthroughs are sometimes discouraged due to having been seen before, or boring because most of the content is the same.
No, that's the point - it doesn't. It drops hints, but it doesn't go hard enough.
It would be okay if Flowey scorned you for murdering monsters after you kill Toriel. That would also play into "replay Toriel fight, get called out".
Not everyone likes replaying games, user. It doesn't help that neutral is basically the shit, anti-climactic ending.
It's good, which is surprising since the creator is incredibly lazy (which he tries to play off ironically) and took a lot from other sources (Earthbound, Homestuck) as well as not delivering on Kickstarter promises. I guess he figures that he does need to since everyone is happy.
His fake humility post on the game's first anniversary was really hard to get through.

It was a fun experience but with zero staying power. I really respect Toby though for not jumping on the sequel train and try to milk his one breakout hit like Scott Cawthon did with fnaf
Lets hope he will break from the pressure for another original title instead.
Which will most like feature cute characters doing quirky stuff like Earthbound and recycled music.
One of the few things Toby did right
>His OWs get more and more intense as you deal more damage
Plataformer. It's literally the same but with a new variable, gravity.
It was a shit wannabe bullethell with nothing going for it but its soundtrack.
It's been a while. Might replay it one of these days, but I cry every time
Cool game, tainted by its fanbase

I believe we all expect great things from Mr. Fox, but If I don't get to see that angelic goat child back with his parents i'm going to fucking lose it.
I expect nothing but just a retread of the only things he is good at. E.g. Earthbound imitations and catchy but forgettable music.
Undertale was a decent meme. It was an indie game that got a really lucky roll of the dice instead of slipping into the mire of shit games no one has ever heard of.
You still have to fight Omega Flowey as a part of the True Ending.
Honestly I'd say it was always gonna get big, it had the entire Homestuck fanbase already behind it, and those fuckers are known to spread their shit everywhere. Only a matter of time really.
Shift clicked
I'm especially impressed T. Fox made all the music himself as well.
this.
why must good games suffer from shitty fanbases?
because most of the characters are antropomorphic animals
and furries are a plague on this world
