A BEATING!

My family lived in Ravenholm.

It's safer in city 17...

Were you the only ones on that train?

is opposing force shit or what

also why didn't valve get gearbox or another studio to make adrian shepard or barney calhoun sequels during the wait for hl3

Tell me, Dr. Freeman, if you can. You have destroyed so much what is it, exactly, that you have created? Can you name even one thing? I thought not

Why did humanity surrender to the combine? Was (((he))) behind all this?

It's good. I'd recommend it

Overwatch stopped my husband for questioning. They said he'd be on the next train, I...don't remember when that was. They're be- nice though, letting me wait for him.

It's the best original Half-Life game, hands down better than Blue Shift and the main game. Decay was fun but mainly because of the Coop puzzels

>fully modelled vagina

>7 hour war

They had technological superiority. Humanity never stood a chance. Breen merely used the situation to his advantage and wanted to be humanitys spokesman to gain advantages.

>"What hast thou... built, Garrett? When the time comes to review thy life, with the Master Builder afore thee, and the question is asked: what hast thou built, what will thee say, poor Garrett? For thou art a man of... destruction, not construction. Tis the biggest sin of all. Build thyself today a good house, that would please Him much!"

>hands down better than ... main game
Nope.

It's fun, though.

Fuck me, why did you do this...Reinstalling

Yes it was. After all the original had Xen which was god awfull. Even Valve hated it.

What are talking about man? Opposing Force had Xen as well.

Xen was good, though. Also, Nihilant was a decent bossfight while Gene Worm was the worst bossfight I've ever seen in an FPS (funny how Gearbox copied it for Borderlands 1).

>first time playing it
>Got into so much
>Believe city 17 is actually exist somewhere in earth

Preeeeeeety much does. It's based on Sofia (where Victor Andonov grew up), Belgrade and Kiev.

>Even Valve hated it
?

Forgot the pic. In fact those very commie blocks were used for texture photos

Damn, exactly setting they used. No wonder the emptiness still there in game

>mods

...

still mad

this shit gives me chills whenever i replay HL2

i love that game to death

...

Yes.

HL2 beta is super interesting.

Thats just a sample of the cool things that we missed, this darker and eerie theme of the game was the shit.

I'm almost done with Black Mesa and anyone that thinks HL1 is better than HL2 is a fucking contrarian. Don't get me wrong, HL1 is great and the second half of the game is fucking incredible, but HL2 has much better level design, mechanics, and locations.

>everyone who disagrees with me is a contrarian!
No, no, just no. Fuck off.

Except that HL2 is objectively better than HL1. Feel free to debate me.

Well you guys they're both great! Valve need to make another single player game again, they're kino storytellers

Not that user, but you must see that half life 2 does have its own problems that to others can be more irritating to other.
I like half life 2 but dislike the driving.

Thats it, im hyped again, im gonna do my best and actually learn how to use hammer and make cool maps, wish me luck!

I don't debate faggots.
>storytellers
Can we please not?

Though I probably wouldn't mind a new SP FPS by them as long as it's not too gimmicky. Both Episodes were an improvement over HL2, though I'm afraid they forgot everything they've learned by now.

Imagine if half life 3 did come out? If it done what half life 2 done to games it could give the boost the gaming industry has needed for so long

And what did HL2 do to games? Physics puzzles? Facial animations? It wasn't the only high profile FPS released in 2004. Wasn't even my favorite one.

HL1 was way more revolutionary. Though I don't really care for revolutions all that much. I'm fine with evolutions.

It was one of the first games to really show off the new engine, that is still being used today in high end games.
Half life 3 would probably be used as the same. To show off the new source engine.

Don't drink the water! They put something in it, something to make you forget.

>It was one of the first games to really show off the new engine
What does that even mean?
>that is still being used today in high end games
A heavily modified version, the same way Call of Duty runs on a heavily modified Quake engine.

It revolutionized unskippable cutscenes

>unskippable cutscenes

Half Life doesn't use cutscenes.

I always hear people bitching about Xen. I never really understood why, it seemed fine to me

there's literally nothing wrong with xen
fuck off you contrarian

>a portion of the game where the player is incapable of making any discerning action or advancing the plot through gameplay

>half life has none of these moments
>ever

Unironically look into a mirror and consider your life choices.

This was in 2003... Why the fuck have games degenerated so much?

WHAT HAPPENED

you grew up

There just was something about games form the early 00s and late 90s where they were not edgy but unapologetic. Just thinking of the fact that children are even modeled here or Deus Ex where you could kill the kids.

Its a meme, Xen was godlike.

Still not a cut scene newfriend

>is opposing force shit?
what the fuck am I reading here? OF was awesome, and im going by the fact I have the box set from back when.

did they fuck up the steam port or something?

Nope, still awesome.

damn. it looks awesome even in todays standards. i think i am going to play through the hl games again..

> playing games

It really is.

The early version of the Kleiner's lab scenes are 10x better than retail, even if it drags on a bit, the dynamic between Barney and Kleiner is something completely absent from the final game.

Breen safed humans from extinction
He is honestly one of the best villains in gaming because he only wants to help humans and believes intergrating with the combine

Go get the WC mappack too so you can see all those cool cut concepts for inspiration.

Sadly, the leak happened after they changed over to the game we know, so there's not a whole lot left of that really dystopian vision of the game

Im well aware of this mappack, but i havent got a chance to actually get it and see it all myself considering the maps require some tweaking to work. I did found the "Get your free TVs" map on Gmod workshop though.

Battlestar Galactica borrowed from this.

I haven't actually compiled them, just pored over them in hammer and cribbed some geometry from them for other maps

under visgroups you can hit Show All and it'll show everything in the map, since for some reason the older vmfs visgroups fuck up when loaded in the retail hammer (no idea if it fucks up in the one that comes with the leak)

you are shit

Gabe said he hated Xen in his recent AMA

No he didn't.

thanks for the reply!

i've since played a bit of opposing force and while i intend to finish it it's pretty boring

i've never really enjoyed the half-life games, but i think through sheer repetition/the power of nostalgia i managed to get myself to the point where i could actually have fun with 2

half-life was all right but i'll probably never replay it
same for blue shift (though i enjoyed it less than hl)

not that guy but one google search could've saved you from making this post

reddit.com/r/The_Gaben/comments/5olhj4/hi_im_gabe_newell_ama/dck9nuk/?context=3

Isn't traptown just the beta name of ravenholdt?

Literally worse than the media you word twisting faggot. It says no where that he hated Xen.

Faggot.

better wait for Source 2 SDK

Breen did nothing wrong

>A cutscene or event scene (sometimes in-game cinematic or in-game movie) is a sequence in a video game that is not interactive, breaking up the gameplay.

Good job giving us the definition of a cutscene, your point?

I believe so and here's a fun fact, the video that the player finds a couple of zombies in a costal area during sunset, is Ravenholm, at first it was designed as a costal town but it got reworked to an isolated mining town.

I wouldnt mind using Source 2 but for now the original will be fine as a learning point. right now im messing around with entities and the like, im also thinking of making replicas of places such as my room for practice.

Not him but Gabe is vague about what he regrets in Half Life in that comment, but specifically points out Xen at the end. Pretty sure he doesn't think highly of it

i think they hated how Xen turned out, it does feel rushed

Exactly he regretted Xen for what it is which obviously meant a lot of the content was cut. not he hated it.

the data packed from the citadel was decoded in episode 2, right?

Yes.

They're always departing but they never arrive. ....and when they do arrive they never leave. No one ever gets on, you never see them go, they're always departing but they never arrive. ....and when they do arrive they never leave....

I love HL, but this is the first thread I ever saw where people praise Xen. Xen looks interesting and it's a really alien environment that looks hostile to your presence in it, but the fun stops there. Xen has rather obscure puzzles (like that cave where mushrooms have to catch those floating lights, you are a dirty liar if you say you figured that one insistently), then it loads of platforming with an altered gravity from what you are used to in the rest of the game, it has loads of strong enemies, it has tentacle worms again. The main offender for me is the stingray puzzle where you have to get on top of that contracting spike, then jump on a flying stingray (or whatever it is) so it can take you to the next part. Now I don't know about you, but that is the only point in the game where you are expected to use an alien creature for transport instead of fighting it making it even more obtuse.

What mods did you play, Sup Forums?

mostly horror mods really

HL1: the usuals like Afraid of Mosnters, Cry of Fear, They Hunger, Paranoia

HL2: Grey, Nightmare House 2, Shadow over Insmouth (shit), Black Snow (really awesome, but I think it's unplayable now due to some HL2 upadate), CUBE (critically underrated), Minerva and a whole pile of other mods whose names I forgot.

Jesus Christ I forgot about this. Games now days don't have much thought put into their level design.

>2005

...

>no cutscenes
>simple puzzles sure, but no ui, quest log, tip, shining, clue, etc.
>implemented physics probably better than any fps ever. Spoiled me in fact.
>literally one of the only 3D games to age like fine wine, even several ps360 gen titles play worse today.
>still fun after 10 years of multiple playthrough's even though I rarely ever replay games.

Man just typing this up makes me mad at the dog shit I've played compared to this amazing expierence.

I don't even want half life 3 any more. It will never live up to this.

What's this? Another life to save?

>>no cutscenes
apart from when you stand around for ten minutes waiting for characters to finish their annoying dialogue

Not only did it add physic puzzles, it was the first proper game with something that looked like actual game physics. Sure there were games with ragdolls and such before, but every single one looked primitive in comparison. Also facial animations, fuck yeah, that's a huge thing for in game immersion. So the combination of the impressive physics, graphics, giant levels with loads of destructible items, all of those things made for one fine and impressive game for 2004.

>annoying dialogue
dialogues are interesting, yo

>talk about unimportant shit that doesn't matter at all while you jump around a lab wishing it was over already
