Zero is full of in jokes and dramatic irony involving certain central characters.
Also the series in general is extremely iterative.
0 to 1 (or 0 to kiwami to 2) would probably be a difficult jump, which is a shame, since 1 and 2 are the well written ones.

Some people just pick up the most recent title and than decide later if they're going to go back and play the rest of the series. I think 2 has a great narrative with some crazy parts, while 3 has a terrible narrative with some crazy parts. The soapyness isn't really correlated with quality imo.
Zero's so far is easily better than all the recent games, though.
