The game that killed JRPGs

The game that killed JRPGs

JRPGs were always shit, what do you think FF7 did?

...

that would be chrono trigger

It had no influence on anything.

it was too successful

people were bound to realize simple turn based combat was trash sooner or later you cant really blame ff7 for that.

It was popular and Sup Forumsirgins are contrarians.

>game improves on a stale and dead game genre
>this is somehow bad

>doomed the franchise to stagnate for several years, if not the generation's lifespan with mention of the next game "being styled like XV's combat was"
It killed Final Fantasy alright, one of the only series putting out JRPGs.

What else are you going to play? More Dragon Quest remakes? Tales of garbage? lol

No game in particular killed Final Fantasy, it went out with a whimper.

And obviously the new king of JRPGs is Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei

>smt
>king of anything

King of PS2 and the DS/3DS.

seems like a cool game, is anyone willing to give me a quick rundown?

wouldn't that be more of the fault of Skyrim and Witcher 3 and their consumers?

You must save the planet with a group of rag-tag ecoterrorists by killing a mind controlling alien on a mission to save his mother.

A ton of great JRPGs came out after FFVII so that statement is retarded.

This is actually accurate.

There's no going back.

Funny how different FF7 sounds when paraphrased.

FF7 was The Pinnacleâ„¢ of the JRPGs, it's been ever steeping downhill ever since.

Normies wouldn't even know what JRPG means if FF7 didn't get released, it's a landmark game.

>chrono trigger

Really? I'd say Kingdom Hearts for normalizing real time/action combat was the start of the downfall.

I'd even say modern MMOs also helped in some regards.

> turn based combat is trash.

When will this meme end?

Yes chess does have more depth than the typical turn based JRPG, whats your point?

The premise is therefore false. Turn based combat in and of itself is not the problem.

The way turn based combat is most often presented is indeed a problem my friend.

JRPGs are still stuck in the past.

Pls no tripfagging if you continue I will dox you senpai.

ignoring OP's contrarian baiting, the game that killed JRPGs will forever be FFXIII
not only did it kill the genre, you have that game to thank for every modern game falling for the open world meme
no one had a problem with linearity until that game came out and it was just one huge hallway

>Funny how different FF7 sounds when paraphrased.
That's the actual plot you mongoloid

most jrpgs are shit, they all fall into the same tropes and they never bother to fix it, but only make it worse. they ignore awesome stuff like grandia style battle systems or great themes like skies of arcadia.

>no one had a problem with linearity until that game came out

then what was the problem?
