>In addition, Sony publicly announced a number of changes slated for the next update. Most importantly, USB 3.0 hard drives up to 8TB can now be used for game storage. Simply plug it in, format the drive, and you’ll be able to keep many, many more games installed at once. The Xbox One has had similar functionality for years now, so we’re happy to see Sony finally catching up on this front.

>If you have a PSVR, your expensive headset is about to become slightly more useful. With 4.50 installed, you’ll be able to watch stereoscopic video from 3D Blu-rays inside the helmet. And considering just how dead the 3D TV market is right now, this might be the last bastion for fans of the tech. If you’re a social networking fan, you’ll be able to post text, images, and animated gifs directly into the PlayStation Network activity feed. Prepare for memes, and warm up your “Block this user” button.

Consoles finally have turbo mode like PCs in the 80s

fpbp

didn't the wii u support external drives since it was released?

Sony wins again

Okay so what exactly does the boost mode do, make the CPU run even slower than it already does?

>format the drive

Do they mean you have to delete everything?

Are you retarded?

breaks any pre-pro PS4 games that can't handle boost mode

Are you flirting with me?

The external drive. But yes, that's what it means. It needs to be emptied before the ps4 can use it, because the ps4 probably uses some proprietary file system.

>Boost mode black screens some of it's games.

how fucking expensive would an 8 TB HDD be?

Will you be my AI gf?

You know that those were used to downclock, right?

Well it came with a fucking 32 GB drive that was slow as shit and that filled up after 2 games, along with digital only titles

That being said, it only supported a handful of drives because the Wii U PSU is shit and cant power a lot of external drives that are even close to being modern.

The turbo button made your computer slower.

I think somewhere around 300-400.

Are SSD a meme? I'm gonna get another hard drive for my ps4 and I know ssd is like the new standard but is it gonna matter really? Like fucking standard 2tb hdd's can move like 5000Mb/s

Can't you plug an external hard disk with external power supply?

320€ here in Europoorland

While that was true back then, you now can make the meme real, and make the button overclock the pc with it. Then go down if it overheats.

SSDs are not a meme, but there's more to consider than just the drive if you want to use an external SSD with your PS4. Can the PS4 take advantage of your drive's speed? does it hamper it if it can? etc.

Only bother if you have a pro, the OG doesn't support SATA 3, there'll be no noticeable difference.

totally makes sense if you think about it, but I'd like to know what games report this issue and interested to see if the mode can get improved so that it works with these games, or if these games need a minor patch to not explode when this mode is active.

Yes, but those are outdated and much more bulky. Anything with USB support would cause the data to corrupt because the console cant give power to the drive. So any modern usb 3 drive will not work, it was sloppy as fuck.

Seriously, the Wii U is like a technical fuck up on so many fronts, from the OS to the entire console design. I have never been so frustrated at how the console handles itself.

Are game installs that large on ps4?

Could I get by alright with a 500gb one of I don't play that many games?

youtube.com/watch?v=p2q02Bxtqds

That's what he means probably, The Wii U's USB connections don't supply enough power for more than a charger or flash drive so externally powered ones were pretty much the only option.
Don't know what he meant by the 32GB filling up after only two games, I got like four Mario games and Wind Waker sitting in the drive right now, along with a handful of eShop titles, and I'm only at half the capacity.

Ok that makes sense then. So an SSD would probably be overkill. That's good for me because HDDs are cheaper.
Cool thanks for the insight

You could get a low powered 2.5 HDD with an Y USB cable. It's what I did.

Sony and Nintendo fucked up in different ways. There's no excuse for taking 3 years to add this feature.

Both handle drives roughly the same. The system is bottlenecking the drives far before SATA 2's limitations.

Also SSDs can be a significant improvement in load times, but is saving yourself 20 seconds on the occasional 60 second load really worth the cost? Probably not for most people.

Fatal Frame 5 and the Xenoblade X install.

Yes

Considering the Wii U was basically useless with a drive, I disagree. At least with the PS4 it already had a large, modern HD.

>Get old, slow tech for one console
No. People keep claiming you can use any HD, but it can barely handle the majority of them. I would say otherwise about Sony if I didn't NEED an HD to play fucking games, but with the Wii U I did.
What a disaster console, it's why I have no faith in the Switch to be well made.

I have an 8 tb external I torrent off of, got it on sale for $250.

They range anywhere from a few MBS for indie games to 60gb for AAA games. Some physical games also have huge 10gb day one patches like FFXV.

Save files can also get ridiculously huge for unoptimized games, like 300mb or so. I think with 500gb you can't go digital heavy, but the patch to add external drives is coming soon anyway.

Why would you get a 500gb drive anyways? 1tb drives are super cheap now.
2tb and more have a little more chance of failing, bcause of the multiple plates.

Are there even enough games to fill 8TB?

>At least with the PS4 it already had a large, modern HD.
>500GB 5400rpm

YES, finally external hard drive support!
>usbs only on on front
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF SONY!!!!!!1

Multiple copies of P.T familam

Will Boost Mode let me play Bloodborne @ 60 fps on the Pro?

hahahaahahahahahahahah

No, it will forever stutter along at 30FPS unless from decide to patch it.

I wouldn't know which HDDs aren't supported by the Wii U, but the one I used was in fact the one that comes inside the PS4, when I replaced it with a 2tb drive.

The Wii U got away with no internal hard drive because games don't require installs if you buy physical.

Come to think of it, I think you can fit the entire Wii U library in a 500gb drive

no but it's better from what I hear.

apparently you at least get a constant 30fps instead of the choppy 19 fps with constant and random dips and stutter. you also get much faster loading times which is a major issue in bloodborne.

Theres a usb port on the back user

>it only took us 4 years and 2 console versions to have some basic modern functionality

Not 60 but smoother
youtube.com/watch?v=6qqgylCea40
youtube.com/watch?v=deb-EaLTgzA

Where? I only see the port for the stupid PS camera.

>no more updates for original PS4

I'll be pissed if nobody exploits the PS4 Amateur or if it's a repeat of the PS3 where you need the oldest fucking model with the oldest firmware and have to install homebrew on a full moon with the stars aligned just right to get it to work.

Only on the Pro

Uh? Where does it say that?

FUCK SONY

>Most importantly, USB 3.0 hard drives up to 8TB can now be used for game storage.

MUH DICK

PC player here, just considered buying a PS4 with the 3 best games and holy fuck is it EXPENSIVE. I'm Canadian.

>$500 - PS4 Pro
>$80 - Nioh
>$30 - Bloodborne
>$30 - Ratchet & Clank

That's $640 plus tax, comes to over $700 dollars total. That is seriously insane.

The pro is a meme, if you're on a budget there's no shame in buying the og/slim.

Sweet, can I use it as a media hub yet? Ps3 was comfy with how I could store my movies and ching chong cartoons on it, or does it not give you a choice and force you to format the drive?

You can already do it now, DLNA support was added years ago, the only thing this update changes b is being able to install games on external drives.

so will the pro be the last iteration these nips will release?

don't want to get blindsided by a better version coming out, but fine with a revision of the pro.

blast processing

Use the ps3 as a media hub still its far better by a mile.

It's been confirmed only certain games will be "boosted"

>Custom backgrounds finally coming to the PS4 when it should've been a feature on release since the PS3 did it before
>Only works for in-game screenshots

One step forward & two step backs, every time Sony.

>finally able to use an external drive to offload games off to
>8tb max so you can only really keep 6 or so games on your external
>which is why it's good the PS4 only has 2 games
Wew

>8tb max so you can only really keep 6 or so games on your external
>games are, on average, larger than 1TB

They are on consoles for some retarded reason

Can you just take screenshots of the web browser or something?

what kind of shit posting is this

Maybe, I don't know the extent of how it works since I'm not a beta tester.

3 mind you, soon to be 4.

>Prepare for memes
Is this some next level bullshitteru?

I don't think so, but you can message someone on the ps messager app and view the image on you PS4 and screenshot that.

tb max so you can only really keep 6 or so games on your external

What game takes up fucking 1.5TB of data? Not even Halo 5 and MCC together do that.

It's called "basic math"

Better than nothing. There's only a few games that I'd care to get performance increases anyway.

I'm thinking about getting a ps4 after my switch. Does the pro add anything for 1080p users? Like will games run smoother?

Yeah, it's mostly up to the dev but undoubtedly games will look nicer (more graphix), run at 4k (not for 1080 users) but also take advantage of the extra hardware. Boost makes some other games run better, so I think it's just objectively the best way to play a PS4.

I don't imagine them having the audacity to make a Pro+.

it doesn't, that guy's not making any sense.

Wii U supported it from the game. Xbox 360 received the feature in 2010, Xbox One had it from day one.

Is this saying only the pro is getting external drive support or do both get it?

Not sure, but I'm pretty sure it's not just the pro. I think the only Pro thing is Boost.

I'm just juggling the idea of whether or not the extra money for it is worth it. Is this boost mode suppose to improve older games as well? Or are the pros hardware improvements only hit or miss for games released after the pro?

The boost mode is ONLY to improve older games. Some games won't work with it, but I hear games like Just Cause 3 (previously unplayable) and The Evil Within are night and day, and Bloodborne is improved. If you're going to buy a PS4 I think it's worth what you get now and for future-proofing. There are good deals on it and used offers all over the place. $330 used on Amazon.

A

to add, all future PS4 games I think have mandatory Pro support. I think.

That sounds pretty good, its kind of what I was hoping for. I guess I'll just have to see where I am financially when I get there. The switch is going to take a chunk out so I guess it will depend on prices at the time.

How consoles work is a bit different. Basically you have the option of selling your physical copies of games to recuperate part of the cost. Or you can buy pre-owned games for a fraction of cost. Or you can buy digital copies on sales, but frankly pc has way better prices for old games.

Still no USB 3D SBS support, it's dead.

>8tb max so you can only really keep 6 or so games on your external
t. Common Core

woah what's next

lan mode update

woah

It handled drives fine as long as you used a 2 usb to 1 connector, which used 2 usbs to power one drive. I've had that setup since I bought my Wii U at launch.

yeah, like switching your harddrive, xbrony?

>but frankly pc has way better prices for old games.
However consoles have better prices for new games.
50 % discount on a two months old release is nothing unusual.

we have keystores to buy slav keys from at day 0

Piracy is the same and cheaper.

Denuvo

Does anyone else here fucking love memes?

I fucking love ''ayy lmao''. Always makes me smile.
