Yeah, unlike some people I'm pretty open-minded about this. If it's fun to play I really don't mind them experimenting with different things. (Plus I can't get enough of the idea of Bomberman as a delicious brown girl.)

I was open to the idea of Act Zero back in the day too, though we all know how that turned out.

I can see why the drastic change in style can be off-putting, even though the edgy Bomberman had more problems than just the unfitting tone, if I remember correctly.

All the N64 Bomberman games are absolutely worth playing. Bomberman Hero is also one of the few games I can think of that has a drum 'n bass soundtrack.

Hm, well, it's not strictly 2D, but if it's fun you want, I highly recommend the Ys series. It's sort of Zelda-ish, but the action is faster paced. Great music and great gameplay, makes you feel like a total badass.

Best one to start with is probably The Oath in Felghana. It has a PC version so you don't necessarily need to emulate it, but the PSP version has voice acting if you're into that.

If you like it then I can also recommend Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim and Ys Seven for more Ys games with similar gameplay. Don't worry too much about the numbers, they all stand alone.

I don't think the designs necessarily "need" to stand out. What's important in the success of a game like this is that the character designs hit the basic traits that people find most appealing, so everyone can have a waifu for their own tastes. You've got the schoolgirl, you've got the robot, you've got the "tough" girl, et cetera.

Personally I love how they all have bomb fuses for tails. That right there is a stroke of brilliance.

It's far from that level because it still has a basis in some pretty strong fundamental routes but it's definitely headed in the wrong direction as far as characters and storylines are concerned much like everything else coming out of Japan where that doesn't seem to matter anymore versus having a bunch of erotic artists draw character designs and then sticking them into a framework with a facsimile of a story. It's such a far cry from the company of heroes on a liberation quest type stories with political scheming and backstabbing of old. Even a lot of Japanese fans of the franchise specifically shit on Fates for the storytelling and that was before Treehouse absolutely butchered it and dummied a whole bunch of conversations for the west. You can tell a lot of the conversations in Awakening were just neutered too as half of them barely make any sense.

If it sells, it sells. And it's not like they sacrificed gameplay to do it. Hell, it's arguable that Awakening and Fates have some of the best gameplay in the series so far.

Likewise, if Nep/Senran had bad gameplay, they wouldn't sell. I'll tell you right here, I've played and enjoyed Senran games because they're respectable beat 'em ups. Couldn't care less about the ecchi, but I don't mind it since it delivers on the gameplay front.
