1 is just really fucking hard, especially if you're going for 100%. It's a lot more about precision platforming, you can't save unless you get a gem/clear a bonus, and crates won't save if you die after hitting a checkpoint. The also tend to throw a lot more enemies at you compared to the later games.

Just be aware that it gets a whole lot harder from here on. The first game has the best level design imo. Cortex Power, Road to Nowhere, and Toxic Waste are some of my favorite levels in the series.
