Why are n64 games so aesthetic? The textures and models actually look really good despite being so low res
Why are n64 games so aesthetic? The textures and models actually look really good despite being so low res
>so aesthetic
nostalgia.
n64 had Bilinear filtering
More powerful hardware than its competitors
Not fun to play though. Was just going through the Water Temple today and had
Early 3D games look like shit
The texture filtering in the N64 (Vanilla, none of that Emulation crap) was a very sweet middle ground between PS1 blocky wobbly textures and smooth blurry textures, it also helped that some developers took advantage of that which is why you have these Rareware games look fucking fantastic considering the hardware.
>mfw being 13 and going from Mario 64's blocky flat polygonal textures to Conker's Bad Fur Day's texture effects like the crap oozing out of Shit mountain, the blood/water effects, the thick metallic feel of the Pipes and the sticky crap on The Great Mighty Poo's mouth
I was more a fan of PS1's graphics desu, despite the lack of a consistent Y axis the pixelated textures and lack of AA just looked nicer to me.
yuk
I was thinking rare games exactly. Some textures in banjo or donkey kong look unreal- very sharp. The metallic areas with the little ridges or bolts, all that shit was so good
I liked the colors of the games. Areas like the observatory in Majora's Mask had a sort of dream-like feeling that I don't think most modern games have.
Ridger Racer 64 is the only other game I am aware of.
i don't see why people like vertex jitter
PS1 graphics always look to me as if the the GPU was melting but still trying to render stuff.
>Using indieshit as an example of PS1 graphics
Speaking of Rare didn't they find a way to remove the blurry anti-aliasing the N64 hardware did on many of their games? I've also heard the later N64's (the different colored ones specifically) removed the anti-aliasing. I've never used an N64 outside of the original black ones so I have never been able to compare.
Texture filtering and AA were done differently than usual.
i dont have a gif of ps1 game, but it does the same shit. the polygons and textures are ugly and distort with movement
despite the weird animations the AI in perfect dark is pretty great
I think they reduced the resolution in certain moments to ease the framerate, but I'm not sure they ever got rid of the aliasing for their games.
Later N64 models don't get rid of the AA in anyway though, but you can do it through GameShark codes.
>Enemy tumbles backwards, switches into an animation where he falls against the wall
fucking
MGS has the worst graphics of anything on ps1. The backgrounds are uneven and twitchy.
>so aesthetic
you're using that wrong
God damn did M64 blow me away when I first saw it at Toys R US on display, had to get it after that. I have quite the N64 collection nowadays.
>but you can do it through GameShark codes.
Thats interesting, some games look much better without it.
MGS1 has some of the best PS1 graphics you idiot. Those twitchy backgrounds are just the fault of the hardware.
That's like saying Megaman on the NES has shit graphics because they flicker sometimes.
I love reading beta and development stories on n64 games, anyone else?
I didn't even know that was going to happen when recording these. I was originally just recording toying with the AI.
I think developers could easily turn off the anti-aliasing if they wanted to. There's an option in Quake to turn it off, for example.
Like I said the worst graphics on ps1.
Nice pic. I started to "hear" the music in my mind.
That would make sense, considering a gameshark can turn them off I imagine developers could easily do it as well.
Turok's disco mode looks awesome. I love when games, especially 64 ones make funky shit like that.
>Games don't have fun cheat codes like this anymore
Mortal Kombat 4
Yeah, I don't remember the last game I played that featured those.
>game doesn't look good within hardware limitations
>"th-the console wasn't strong enough!"
Has Nintendo really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
>n64 games
>anything but dark, muddy, fog filled messes
There are exceptions like Banjo Kazooie but they're scarce in a library that isn't big to begin with.
>Play this
>Game looks like complete ass
>Somehow charms the pants off me
My nigga
try telling that to /fit/
>Mimtemdo 64
Then:
>You have 700 polygons to work with. Make the best model you can.
Now:
>You have 700 hours to work with. Make the best model you can.
