Why does this thing have practically no good games?

Why does this thing have practically no good games?

I mean, there's Monster Hunter, and the incoherent bullshit that passes for Fire Emblem these days, and you can replay the best Legend of Zelda, and I've heard Bravely Default might be good...

But other than that, is there anything for this console that anyone besides children and the lobotomized would actually want to play?

Yo-Kai Watch 1 and 2.

This is kinda my point though, do you guys actually think any of these are, well, GOOD?
Most of those are stupid as fuck, pointless color-blob wastes of time.

This guy ^ is more on the right track, but even so...
Rune Factory is at least entertaining, but it's still ultimately a bit superficial. 4 looks like it might be fun, but in the end it's not really that good of a game, it's just a kinda weak collection of shallow, light pastimes.

Etrian Odyssey has a really interesting gameplay premise, but it always feels incomplete, like half of a proper game.

And Shin Megami Tensei is just ridiculous, I can't take that crap seriously.

So yeah. I'm not asking for recommendations, I'm seriously asking: Why are there no good games for the 3DS? What the hell happened?

It's basically all either perennially rehashed franchises of no interest to anyone but little kids experiencing them for the first time, or half-baked JRPGs without even a glimmer of the depth and quality that used to define that genre. There's a very scarce handful of good ones, but even those are all lesser games than what used to get made for the freaking SNES.

There are no good western RPGs except remakes, no halfway decent strategy games at all, no puzzle games that aren't childish as fuck...

So I'm seriously asking, why aren't there good games for this console? It's a great piece of hardware that's got more than enough computing power to do basically anything game designers could want from it, and yet they aren't making anything better than the fucking 8-bit days, and for the most part it's actually worse than that.

I'm just kinda baffled by the dearth of quality games.

You've described the vast majority of modern videogames, user, regardless of platform.

What more do you want?

>Yo-Kai Watch

I'm pretty sure the target demographic of that franchise is people under the age of 10.

Not so, some recent television console games have been downright masterpieces, and at the very least they use the technological improvements of new hardware to push game design towards new limits.
In recent years there's also been an abundance of independent games doing really creative things, mainly for PC but often making it to the main consoles as well.

But with handheld gaming it's just, the same old shit. If anything handheld games have gotten WORSE over time.

I was hoping maybe there were games I was missing out on, that I'd somehow overlooked, but it doesn't look like it...

>I don't like those games
>therefore they are bad

Perhaps the games aren't the problem, user.

I'm making one for it right now
>pic related

It will probably take 1-2 years
Please understand

Most of the games listed are just straight-up low-quality games, in objectively appraisable ways. Anyone who looks at them can see they're not any better, and usually quite a bit worse, than the games that were being made 20, 25 years ago. That's just inexcusable.

While they never were better than Unwound Future, the 3DS Layton games were fine

Nice meme kiddo

That's great to hear! I think more independent games, things produced with some actual creative intent, would be fantastic for the handheld platform.

Could you tell us more about your game? What's it going to be like?
And how are you dealing with the limitations of the flash-based cartridge medium?

Yes, I do. It's not like I listed every 3DS game, I omitted quite a few games like Final Fantasy Explorers, Conception 2, VLR (better on Vita), Paper Mario Sticker Star, etc.

I did forget to mention Mario Kart 7 which is great.

>things produced with some actual creative intent
Well, it's heavily influenced by Metroid Prime: Hunters, though the art style will be more "original".

>Could you tell us more about your game? What's it going to be like?
FPS with touch-screen aiming on the 3DS (optional second analog stick, but I wouldn't recommend it).
The programmer is still working out how the networking and all functions, but we're hoping we'll be able to do multiplayer too (deathmatch only - Coop would mean too much extra work in terms of making sure everything renders correctly on both ends, that the AI works against multiple targets, difficulty balancing, etc.).
We're also making a PC port, just because it's relatively easy with Unity, but everything is scaled to fir the 3DS architecture and run at 60FPS.

>how are you dealing with the limitations of the flash-based cartridge medium?
Now, the flash cart isn't rally the choke point. We can have cards up to 4GB, so we can fill the game with huge amounts of data. The problem is loading it. Particularly, the video memory is a big hurdle (the n3DS has 6MB and the o3DS has 4MB?), meaning I have to make textures really small (it doesn't even handle anything above 256x256 well), and limit the number of textures that load simultaneously.
This means that I must reuse as much as I can, and also design the levels to work with tiling textures. It's been quite a heap of stuff to learn, but it's pretty fun.

>Zelda: LBW

Thanks for reiterating my point.

That looks pretty interesting, I hope it goes well! There definitely need to be more FPSs on handhelds.

Thanks!

Yeah, I was blown away by how fun Metroid Prime Hunters was - It was almost like playing Quake for the first time again!
And it actually worked with fast and twitchy aiming, thanks to the touchscreen input.

Anyway, going to bed now - Thanks again for the nice comments.
Will do my best!

>Thanks for reiterating my point.
I just posted 28 excellent games and you think that helps your point? Those are only games that I've happened to play user, there are tons others as well.

It's okay, you can just let your thread die now.

>five pokemon games
Good list lmao

Any library is bad whenever you compare it to the DS. I can't wait until 3DS SD card loading becomes a viable option because when it does I'm going to go fucking ham and download a shitton of DS roms.

Yeah, turns out this "Pokemon" thing is actually a pretty big hit. Who could've known?

Nintendo exclusives (mario, zelda, etc)

>LoZ
>Kid Icsrus
>animal crossing
>multiple pokemon
>kh
>mario kart
>smt4
>sm3dl
>RE
>ace and layton
>backwards compatible with DS

Admittedly it's light on "hardcore" titles outside of lame jrpg spinoffs but it has a good selection of nintendo flagship games and important entries in other franchises

Kirby: Planet Robobot is the greatest gaming experience I've had in a decade.

It's never going to be a viable option. Just shell out the 8 dollars for a fucking flash card, mate.

This.
