I did a short sword and shield run and now I doing a long sword one. I hope by the time I complete it with each weapon a sequel will be released

90% of the game is spent in dull, brown environments.

Not all games need vibrant color every where user, some games have select color palettes and use it stylistically. I think Vagrant Story is has my favorite graphical style in any game ever.

Can't beat the final boss.

>masterpiece
>with that gameplay
Nah. Should have been an anime or a VN.

And yet the art design is still god tier. How did they do it?

>bought this when it came out becuase SQUARESOFT
>it's not a turn-based RPG like Final Fantasy
>return it the next day

grindy slow combat, pretty bad graphics even for the day.

You don't deserve to live

It's a masterpiece.

Lies. This game has some of the best graphics on the PS1

It's like that segment in Dork Souls where you take down a boss with doing only 1 damage to it, except it's the entire game.

>get thrown in the middle of battle with zero explanation
>attacking different body parts apparently has no specific effects on enemy
>damage is the same
>accuracy isn't the same, though
>you can just keep attacking repeatedly while staying in place with no downsides to it

Dropped it after 2 hours

dogshit

It's no Knack, but it's still pretty good.

Horrible unless you bypass all the affinity garbage with gameshark, and even then the item management is extremely tedious.

Literally my goat.
Replay it at least once a year.

Also my favorite soundtrack of all time.
Everything bar the soundtrack holds up horribly today, but when I first played it I could not believe my eyes. it still holds those feelings.

DELICIOUS COCKTAILS

>90% of the game is spent in menus

fixed that for you

>lemme just get that item real quick

I like the presentation, story, and characters, but I don't care for the gameplay.

I remember playing it a few times but I never really got into it. The combat system was interesting, but like says I don't remember hitting different body parts making much difference. I liked the combo system though.

Bought this over MGS, at the time of which i played the shit out of it.

Vagrant sucked ass with a weird badly explained battle system. I guess it was meant to be a grinder game? I didn't get too far into it before i tossed the thing. Waste of money. I'd put in in the same group of games as Breathe of Fire Dragon Quarter.

A really good game that I dislike honestly. Having so many different enemy weaknesses with enemies having such strong resistances that they'll sometimes take 0 damage from a hit is pretty nuts.

Still, the combat system was really awesome and every other aspect was still great. Also the protagonist has some 90s as fuck baggy pants going on.

The bullshit final boss requiring you to grind up power against one type of enemy which you can only really do in a couple parts of the game and fuck knows you're not going to know about it before that point really was just a load of old horsecrap.

I ended up landing a 35-hit combo to trounce that fucker.

Everything up to that was golden. The implementation of the arcade elements was awkward with that one giant fucking hallway sticking out like a sore thumb on your first playthrough.

Wouldn't replay it, but I liked it.

>le spent 80% of the time changing weapons in the menus game

>tfw I made an adjustable excel sheet full of gameshark codes to ignore the resistance and affinity bullshit and still have a nice challenge but the drive it was on died spontaneously

...

I always thought this game reeks of homoerotism so I avoided it.

...

>attacking different body parts apparently has no specific effects on enemy
but it does you fucking retard next time read the manual

Fav game of all time

if you attack the right arm the enemy attack loers the left they blocking and so on just for example

u wer kinda rite

>50 % OF THE GAME GOT CUT
J U S T

>run into regular knight
>his affinity scores are all double mine
>he's weak to air
>I have no way of knowing he's weak to air because he's a fucking regular knight

>equip human-affinity weapon
>cast str-up
>cast str-down
>open targeting sphere
>0 damage on every part

>scan
>miss

>scan
>miss

>equip fire weapon
>0 damage on every part

>equip light weapon
>0 damage on every part

>equip air weapon
>8 damage 95%
>kill him in 5 short combos

>his partner appears from around the corner
>he has completely different elemental affinities

hurp durp lets give regular enemies 60 to all elemental defense with one randomly chosen weakness for each individual enemy then make you fight 4 of them in one room all with different affinities because why shouldn't a room full of mooks take longer than a boss fight?

Why didn't they leave the good half?

>omitting that switching out gear takes like half a minute

stop trying to make this game look better than it actually is!

Why are you a faggot?

Combat becomes a joke when you learn to make more than 20+ combos, you can kill all bosses without even being attacked once.

>elementel affinity
There is your problem. You just need three weapons, something slashy, something pointy and something blunt. The elements are just for some bit of extra damage.

Stuck in the Faerie Forest and these little fucking salamanders are poisoning me to death in like 2 hits.
How'd I even get here?

Halfway into the game, most enemies have 50+ physical resist unless they're specifically weak against physical.

>I like the presentation, story, and characters, but I don't care for the gameplay.

That's usually how it goes for Yasumi Matsuno games, except when he uses an existing framework like tactical RPGs.

FFXII, Vagrant Story, and Crimson Shroud all have controversial mechanics despite all of them having wonderful presentation/story/world/characters

I got bored with it. Some really interesting ideas and had so much potential, but this was such a good time for games and this took soooo long to get interesting.

Gems and spells, my man, gems and spells.

What is up with this and the fucking PE thread? Why are so many people posting threads about great PS1 games?

Why was ps1 era Squaresoft so fucking based?

Some e-celeb probably played them recently.

It's a shame that almost half the game was cut due to space limitations

You need the workshop to equip gems. And you still need to find out which weakness the enemy has, either by guessing or casting scan with a 50% miss rate.

the answer to life is in the opening scene

i don't know who this artist is but I like the eyes

>0 damage on every part
> break arts on the mother fucker for straight 30 minutes till he drop

>You need the workshop to equip gems
Nope, I guess you just suck at the game.

>You need the workshop to equip gems.
Why would someone go on the internet to tell lies?

Were you frozen since 98?

>do 0 damage because I'm a fucking scrub
>git gud and use chains

You can cheese the game with the build phantom + release phantom chains, or you can just heavy blow + crimson pain your way through everything.

You can also inflict statuses, don't forget to use prostasia, herekles, degenerate and tarnish. There are literally so many ways to kill stuff even if you can only do 0 damage. Also,

>finish dungeon
>find workshop
>save and repair gear
>spend the next 30 mins crafting in the workshop safety listening to youtube.com/watch?v=PiPomfq9UKs

maximum comfy

I tried playing this game once but I didnt understood why I was making only 1 point in damage each hit so I stopped playing.

I played FF XII a lot before playing Vagrant Story, and it was fun to see that a lot of elements of FF XII actually appeared years ago. It's the little things, like the soundtrack similarities, some terms in the lore, the flash when you land the killing blow on a boss. Oh gosh Matsuno you know what buttons to press on me.

>forget one mechanic from a 20 year old game
>HURR DURR YOUR BAD AT THE GAME

Stop and examine your life for a second.

You're bragging about remembering a single mechanic from a mediocre 20 year old game. Not only are you obnoxiously autistic, you're not even using your autism to do anything cool like killing a boss with a 200 hit combo or getting a speedrun WR. You're just sitting on Sup Forums, gloating about the most basic, trivial bullshit.

You are so fucking annoying.

Played it for 20 minutes but dropped it because it was an eyesore and looked like shit

But user, I just played it some days ago. Still not able to defeat the final boss.

Doesn't FFXII's story go to shit because Matsuno left?

This game is the biggest case of "I wish I could like it but the gameplay is just too shit" I've ever played.

great game, unfortunately there was no "git gud" meme back then so people just whined about the difficulty
squaresoft made the mistake of making the game moderately difficult when their target audience is mostly DSP-tier retarded

>Oh cool, a VS thread
>See comments

Jesus christ Sup Forums, can you actually play something more than a platformer for kids or anything that requires more than two neurons is a shitty game?

Yes and no. There are legitimately people out there who don't like "stories happening to the world," they like "stories happening to the main characters." So even those people would still say 12's story is shit.

But even for people like me who like both styles of narrative, 12's story did get rushed due to his leaving

In this day and age? No, sadly

>being so much of a fanboy you defend one of the slowest and most obtuse, boring battle systems ever conceived

Just admit you like the game despite its flaws instead of embarrassing yourself by outing yourself as a fanboy.

...

>obtuse

Just admit you hate the game because you're an ADD riddled retard too lazy to read the in game manual instead of embarrassing yourself by outing yourself as a casual :^)

>gets BTFO
>w-waaahhhhh you DUM DUM!!!

Embarrassing. Utterly embarrassing. This is the last (You) you'll get from me, kiddo. Don't bother replying, since I won't even read it. But if you feel the need to have the last word so you can feel like you win (something I imagine you don't experience a lot, heh), feel free.

Slow? Maybe.
Obtuse? Not by a long shot, it's a pretty simplistic battle system revolving on a few more stats than your average console RPG, Dwarf Fortress is what I'd call obtuse, and even then, there's only so much in that game that's actually obtuse and not just complex.
You need to stop being bad at videogames.

I know VS' flaw, it's called Raging Ache, everything else it's good.

Remake + overhaul battle system = Squarenix has his own Dark Souls-like game

not even the same guy, you mongoloid
also
>kiddo
>heh

back to ribbit

Jeez that guy is premium mad.

Best everything I have seen in any game, wish there were more games that combined gameplay, atmosphere, story and music this well.

10/10 masterpiece and the ultimate pleb filter.

>overhaul battle system
You mean making it more dynamic? how would you even go about that while keeping all those body stats in relevance, how would know what are you hitting if you remove that whole pause for choosing which bodypart to hit?

The story and presentation are great, but the gameplay is really cumbersome and slow. Too much crafting, stat juggling, and other pedantic bullshit bogs down the pacing of the game.

...

If you're not autist enough to enjoy crafting why not just abuse chains

Needs a remake. But only if Matsuno personally oversees it

>Why was ps1 era Squaresoft so fucking based?
Because that was real Square, after they went bankrupt Enix just bought its IPs and used their name to fool retards into thinking they are the same people when only 2 or 3 guys remain.

But Enix made games like Dragon Quest and the Soul Blazer trilogy, which were much better than Square's shit.

are you playing the game on a calculator?

No, I've saved random pictures

I asked because I don't remember it being that grainy

They also had a lot of changes, including the shitty president of the company, they went through so many changes it became EA tier.

Feels like a chore. The story is intriguing, but I fucking hate the combat and the farthest I've made it is a bit after that dragon in the woods.

Been resisting to reading the story in Wikipedia for years because I keep telling myself I'll finish it someday.

Its a PSX game. It looks good in motion, terrible in stills.

I know this feel, i bought it on ps store last week but the gameplay lost me. I will continue but it felt so confusing.

>can't even see your own characters
>better than anything
lol

>gameshark 20 of every affinity to my sword
>have a decent amount of fun, not gimped and not OP
>never sharked my armor, enemy damage was always manageable
>get to new area, some faggot enemy casts some faggot bolt spell and insta-kills me
>haven't saved in ages

Haha, good post!

...NOT!!!!!!!! Die, cuck! *casts worldend nova on you which erases your existence*

my autism would not let me finish the game.

constant weapon switching was too tedious and i simply can not not do it, so i over encumbered my brain and patience.

>But Enix made
No
>Dragon Quest
Garbage
>Soul Blazer trilogy
Of which only Terranigma is good.
>which were much better than Square's shit.
"No"
