Now that the dust has settled, what did Sup Forums think of the original Nintendo Wii?
Gimmick gone wrong
Used it for about a month then forgot about it. The whole motion sensing gimmick got kicked in the head as soon as I realised that the majority of the games I was playing either didn't take advantage of the gimmick at all or just used it for one or two actions i.e throwing a grenade or rolling it along the floor based on the movement you made.
Waggle to jump
Waggle to attack
Waggle to spin
Waggle to roll
Just useful for point and shoot games like Metroid and Pikmin
Glorified Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda Skyward Sword emulator machine
The Most comfy console of all time
Modding it makes it a very useful console for a variety of things. The base features and motion control games are a steaming pile of shit
A few genuinely good games probably held back by the main gimmick of motion controls, but the system itself wouldn't have sold as well if not for said motion controls. It was dirt cheap too, so definitely worth owning, even if it may have pulled more time as a Gamecube than an actual Wii.
pretty good library
How are light gun/arcade shooters with this thing?
A decent amount of hidden gems among a literal ocean of raw sewage
I like the wii alot but at the time I felt like 3rd parties didn't put any effort into their games. They didnt bother trying to push the hardware or integrate motion controls properly. They just got really lazy and slapped waggle on to stuff
Activision were the only ones who tried. You can shit on Activision all you like but they are always p good with nintendo systems and they put effort into their ports. They ported Cod4, blops, mw3 to wii and they even made a special edition classic controller for their goldeneye remake
Konami also put a decent out of thought into the PES ports. Many people considered the wii versions of PES the best version, because they took time to integrate the wii mote properly
As someone that tried over 50 Wii games I can say most are garbage. As per usual only Nintendo's games are decent save for a few exceptions like Rhythm Heaven Fever.
I loved playing FPS here. Call of Duty Modern Warfare is best played on a Wii.
The controller sucks ass because of how it needs batteries holy shit I hate this so much it's what forced me to buy a bunch fo rechargeable batteries and a recharger and even then it's such a hassle oh god why did they do that.
It's the best console if you want to invite some normie friends to have fun in your house playing vidya. Boot up Wii Sports Resort and have fun on ping pong or swordfight or something similar.
Best console for emulating. Well, the Wii U is technically the best but only because of vWii, so...
While the motion controls were convenient I really really hope no console ever tries something like that again. The amount of games that made clever use of it (like, well, most Nintendo games) is the 1%, the other 99% are games that made shit use of it and made me hate the feature.
If you pirated it, fucking great, so many hidden gems.
If you didn't, lol.
That shit looks like a dil-do
I dont know what to think.
They sold a lot of them, but as a standard gaming platform, you would probably measure its success in number of classic controllers sold.
I rarely original classic controllers around here, same with wii u pro controllers.
I liked it, it had some good first party games, could play my old GameCube games after my GC died, and best of all it was easy to soft mod
>pirating a console
>I really really hope no console ever tries something like that again
The Switch has motion controls.
Textbook nintendo console. Weak ass hardware, great IPs. Thank god Nintendo puts immense care in optimising first party games to run fine. No reason to care about 3rd party software.
Underrated console even if it sold like hot cakes, people were afraid to be confused with soccer moms because both used a Wii which I always found kinda juvenile ("I am a serious person who plays serious games"). A 7/10 console that became 9/10 after softmod.
Main problems to me: aside Sega and a couple of other publishers third parties were lazy as fuck during its second life cycle throwing tons of garbage and occasionally some neat game, Nintendo made some really great games for the machine but some games had unnecessary waggling, the absurd price for connecting it properly to an HD TV
This. It was nothing more than an overclocked gamecube with shitty controls.
Ghost Squad, Dead Space Extraction, the two House of Dead and I suppose there are some other ones: they're really good and work splendidly with the pointer.
>not owning a 3D printer to pirate consoles
All i needed to know. Thank you
The wii is probably the best system to own if yu can only have on system in your house. It has hardcore stuff, all the sports games, cod, mario kart plus tons of fun shovelware things like wheel of fortune incase u have girls or the elderly over. It's got something for everyone and it looks slick
I meant pirating the majority of the games sorry. Although there is Dolphin so you can emulate which is somewhat close.
1TB HDD + Whatever that blue loader was off gbatemp + Grabbing tons of games = Awww yeah boy
Then just clear off ones you don't care about.
Also an SD card with all the GBA/GBC/GB/NES/SNES/Genesis games makes it pretty fucking okay for emulation. I used it to play a bunch of biker mice from bars with my bro a few years ago as well as just a ton of older games in the living room when bored and playing with friends.
I also have a wii u but I haven't softmodded it yet so I have no idea how much good stuff is on it as my library for it is limited.
Zelda musou game is shit, brawl is fun, mario kart is mario kart.
How well does the wii execute emulation?
I hate fiddling around with it on pc, going through 10 emus untilfinding a mediocre one that runs. Does the wii handle it better?
RetroArch does everything 8bit/16bit pretty well, NES/Famicom/SMS/MD-Genesis/SNES/PC-Engine, never had any problem. Some Arcade stuff is kinda tricky and sometimes don't work, sometimes it does. There's also WiiSX for Playstation one, only played GT2 and Omega Boost on it and never had any problem with them, they work great.
Haven't had any problems, if anything the most annoying thing is setting the channel up to the right directories if you want one of those fancy all in one channel launchers.
It's pretty easy on PC as well though, PSP was the easiest and best I've ever had though.
Great, I missed teh wii nearly completely and it looks promising. It costs 90 € used, should I get it or just emulate and get motion/nun instead?
more like the dust has collected
i sold mine after a year or so
>90 €
That's actually a lot, I don't know where you live but I bought mine used 4 years ago for 45 € with two wiimote plus, nunchucks and a classic controller.
The dust will never settle.
Wii U is now last gen, you should not being $100+ for a 2 gen old device.
Make sure you look at what version you need it to be on for softmod and then purchase accordingly. Don't waste your time if you can't set it up with a hard drive that has all the isos on it.
>Textbook nintendo console. Weak ass hardware,
well, the Wii was the frst console who had inferior hardware compared to the current competition
good deal, but i think 90 is worth it when looking on all the games im willing to try.
How are driving/racing games with the wiimote?
A shitmmick shitsole.
I liked it, even the motion controls
I think they all can be softmodded except the red one.
This.
I never got why the shovelware keep being brought up as a bad thing when it had a very good library of decent games.
It's like complaining about a five star restaurant because there's five fast food joints on the same block
There were a bunch of creative games on there but most played shitty because of motion controls. I will never beat okami because I invested 15 hours into the wii version but needed to drop it because of the awful controls. That Nintendo dropped the ball so hard and probably forced devs to put waggle in makes the Wii a rotten console for me. Though you can find a few games that did profit from motion controls.
Even though it had the worst smash game, the good games it had I played so much that I got moneys worth, the was before I grew up and got a job, but damn it had some really good games.
Pretty great if you mod it. Having an entire library of SNES games I can play on my TV with the original controller is comfy as hell.
It was really fun and had some really good games. Motion control was a bad gimmick tough. It mainly made some games more bothersome and tiring to play.
