Does it matter what order you play the series in? I bought Awakening when it came out, but didn't really get into it. I started playing Fire Emblem GBA last week and am really enjoying it. Should I just keep going in order?

Not at all, really. Most of the games are either flat-out unconnected or duologies.

Fire Emblem GBA is a prequel to The Binding Blade. It also shares an engine with The Sacred Stones, and otherwise resembles Path of Radiance in structure. They're all fine choices if you like FE7.

Aside from quality of life improvements as things go on, not really.

If you want a "sequel" to it and don't mind something a bit harder, go for Fire Emblem 6 (The Binding Blade) also on GBA. It takes place 20 years later and stars Eliwood and Hector's kids, it's JP only but the fan-translations are great.
