Now that the dust has settled, how's the overall opinion on RE 7?
An okay game, a little bit short but still i had fun.
I liked classic RE. RE1-3 were childhood favorites of mine. Friends and I would have parties where we would just play and trade off and get spooked and make decisions and solve puzzles as a group. I don't even remember of the name where it was exclusively Claire (rescued by Chris at the end) but I particularly loved that one too.
When it became an action RPG it lost me. The game with Leon wasn't half bad, I remember mostly disliking the new zombies and the over-the-top bosses. Then the next game, the moment Chris punched a fucking boulder I knew I was 100% done with the series.
I didn't play any other games since, except for RE7. Despite a short campaign, it was the the only RE game that brought me back. I found it nostalgic, and I found it difficult (on the first playthrough, anyway). It was the first story I liked since RE2. I loved the bosses, although the lack of a real last boss was kind of a disappointing climax and the story wasn't as solid as RE1/2. The lack of variety of killable enemies was also disappointing, I wish the boomer/crawler weren't the same type of creature. I have not tried any of the DLC. I've beaten this game 4 times, each difficulty at least once, and have most achievements. I hope the free content in november is ok.
8/10
Would have been a modern classic if the endgame wasn't so weak.
Killing Jack so early was a mistake. He was supposed to be the Pyramid Head of the game, always tormenting Ethan.
agreed. that was probably a scrapped plan seeing as he returned before the boat.
id imagine that would steal the spotlight too much from marguerite and lucas though. but those two would probably have to be made more interesting for the solution they chose.
>He was supposed to be the Pyramid Head of the game, always tormenting Ethan.
ugh, what?
Shit I guess I don't know I haven't played it.
Except there are 3 boss fights against him. I don't think he died very early at all. The final time to kill him, you leave the Baker residence altogether and find yourself on the ship, facing Eveline which is basically the end of the game.
Bosses were fucking bullet sponges. I'm not even talking "you gotta use the environment to fuck them up" which was great when fighting Jack, but they took way too long to kill.
>dat feel when I literally killed Marguerite with a knife because I ran out of ammo
I mean shit, I'm not a bad shot, but she takes so many bullets to die. I didn't want to blow my grenades,
>use weak weapons on strong enemies
>hurr durr bullet sponges
cool argument
Jack should've been the final boss. He should be on the ship and on the mine too.
I disagree. While Eveline's "bossfight" was underwhelming, it made the most sense. Eveline was the cause of this whole catastrophe and she was controlling the Bakers. I would have like if her bossfight was less of a "cinematic experience" and more of a legitimate fight, but I thought killing Eveline was the most logical conclusion to the game.
>I can't read
cool argument
My favorite game of the franchise. The only good one outside of the first two.
I hope that they continue to make these more human-oriented stories, rather than spinning back up into full-on MUH SEKRET LAB bullshit.
if you bought it, you got scammed
if you pirate it, you know it's not worth buying whatsoever
>I didn't want to blow my grenades,
i see what you mean now but this didn't have one and only one possible interpriation. were you shooting her in the pussy? did you upgrade your handgun?

I ran out of flamer ammo but still had significant amounts of ammo for all my other guns at the end of the fight. Shoot her in the pussy, shoot her when she's on the walls. Not to mention the area you fight her in is filled with bullets and Chem fluid.
RE7 is a good game and a good return to form after the atrocities of RE6 and 5. Only problem with it is that it's pretty short with no replay value (Nightmare mode is interesting, but it's DLC).
>>dat feel when I literally killed Marguerite with a knife because I ran out of ammo
>I mean shit, I'm not a bad shot, but she takes so many bullets to die. I didn't want to blow my grenades,
Sounds like you aimed at the wrong part. Her weak spot isn't her head, it's her gross beehive snatch.
Also
>I didn't want to blow my grenades
what the fuck are you saving resources for, if not bosses?
>I don't even remember of the name where it was exclusively Claire (rescued by Chris at the end) but I particularly loved that one too.
Code:Veronica
>When it became an action RPG it lost me.
RE4-6 never played like an action RPG to me.
I thought it was neat because I had fucked around with her so much during the game. I kept saying whenever I saw her "yaknow, I like you old lady. You never try to kill me, you never try to spook me. I feel like one of these times you're gonna grab me while I'm walking past you and scream at me. But until that point, you're pretty swell." And I didn't put 2 and 2 together until you get the other serum in the salt mines. I kept thinking she was just another Texas chainsaw massacre reference, turns out she was more like Jason's mom.
I'm just glad they made a game about depraved inbred rural white America.
I think people only had difficulties with Jack fights because A) they weren't aggressive enough and B) forgot to block. Do it right and you'll deflect his attacks when you two end up fighting with chainsaws.
>Ethan, ETHAAAAAN
i didn't think it was good but i still played it 5 times through so it must have been good tho
The first half(the mansion) was fantastic.
From the part on the boat the entire game falls apart.
It becomes a bad linear fps.
also a bit short,my first run was 6:48
>Mid Tier: RE3
>Low Tier: RE:CVX
Opinion discarded.
Anyway, RE7 was a pretty meh experience. overall. Combat sucks balls, predictable plot and almost 0 replay value.
i killed her with 44 mag
took 2 shots to the head before running away, fight had 3 shots iirc
cut the Lucas sections, the boat and the salt mine and it's a 10/10 for me
I'm kind of a giant fag for horror games, and holy shit everything besides these parts metioned was the most tension i've ever felt playing vidya
>also a bit short,my first run was 6:48
To be fair all Resident Evils were short, but there's too many cutscenes in RE7 gobbling that time up.
I had more or less the same experience. While Old Eveline's sudden appearances in odd areas absolutely gave me a spook or two, it was almost comforting having someone in that family who wasn't trying to kill me all the time. Although once I gathered information on "E-001" and remembered back to the picture you find at the start of the game, I felt betrayed.
>don't want to use big guns on the big enemy, use peashooters instead
>'enemies are bullet sponges'
you're fucking stupid, you know that?
An okay game at best, didn't really care for any of the characters, other than Jack being a hilarious bastard.
I never felt like Resident Evil did horror, or "Survival Horror", very well so I wasn't really excited for "MUH ROOTS". The most chilling scene in the game is where you see Marquette's creepy deformed shadow scurry off in a tunnel and that's about it. Gameplay wise I didn't care for how slow everything felt.
All in all it's a meh game, and it doesn't have much replay value in it so it ranks lower than Re5 and 6 for me
>return to form
What the hell are you even talking about? I keep hearing this online and I wonder what dimension are you people from where RE7 is anything like older games. If anything THIS is the real outlier in all the core entries so far.
>save rooms
>slow pacing
>enemies in tight corridors
>have to plan before going into enemy encounters
In the village of RE4 alone you kill more enemies than all of RE7 combined and there is no planning, it's just fast paced run and gun nonstop.
Pfff. I went in there with the 1911 with enhanced rounds, Shotgun, Flamer and the grenade launcher. Mostly cooked her since flamer fuel is all over the place and she didn't soak up all my ammo. you just sound bad.
Weren't you kinda fucked afterwards considering at that point you've kinda found most of the ammo in the house?
Commit suicide
I thought they made it TOO obvious that she was Evie.
>What the hell are you even talking about? I keep hearing this online and I wonder what dimension are you people from where RE7 is anything like older games. If anything THIS is the real outlier in all the core entries so far.
Not to sound like a broken record, but the mansion part of RE7 feels so much like RE1 it's ridiculous.
RE7 even has that fucking "wait for an enemy to get ridiculously close so you can blow their head off with the shotgun" strategy I constantly used in REmake.
>The first half (the mansion) was fantastic. From the part on the boat the entire game falls apart. It becomes a bad linear fps.
we
got
sames
I thought exactly the same thing
if the whole 'eveline" backstory explanation of things was just thrown in the trash and the rest of the game was still on the house, with some other plot, the game would have been much better
also having weapons more powerful than a pistol or a home-made fire thrower is always a bad idea, imhotep, in a horror game
Other than little scary girl cliche shit, was worth a play
>What the hell are you even talking about? I keep hearing this online and I wonder what dimension are you people from where RE7 is anything like older games.
We say it because it IS like the older games. Only things that are different is that it's first person and has a couple stealth sections. Everything else is classic Resident Evil 1-3 material. Very slow-paced, lots of wandering around exploring, lots of inventory management, comparatively quite a lot of puzzles (even if they were dead simple). That is exactly what classic RE was all about.
I played in VR with reticle turned off, smooth scrolling camera. 14 hours to beat Normal, still playing through Madhouse and the DLC (Nioh has had my attention all last week).
THE GOOD
>combat feels damn good, enemies are responsive and you don't feel overpowered at all
>save rooms and inventory management make a welcoming return
>molded are creepy, regular molded can be unpredictable in how they move and the crawlers make me panic
>insects reminded me of RE2 / Outbreak
>the plotline is interesting when you start looking at the small details, the Baker family is tragic and the premise is creepy
>great environmental design that often uses high verticality and tight spaces to intensify the VR experience
>very good set dressing and use of lighting makes areas feel real and movie-like
>enough key item finding and ammo / resource hiding in the game to encourage exploration, treasure photos were a neat thing
>Ethan's VA is great, I like that he didn't say much as it makes him more of a fill-in for me to take over with
>the variation in some scripted events (particularly at the beginning with Jack) and the possibility of skipping some during your first playthrough is really cool
>Nightmare / Night Terror is short, but really fun
>Madhouse actually adds a lot to the experience and is one of the few times where I really want to play a 2nd time and still feel tense while playing
THE BAD
>floating hands
>during scenes, it snaps back to the original head position which can sometimes be jarring
>fat molded are more annoying than creepy for me
>the decision between the girls feels lazy
>the birthday puzzle, though fun, felt a little sloppy
>could have used just one more area and one more enemy type to make it feel more robust content-wise
>Jack boss with the eyes feels out of place, more fitting for RE5-6
THE UGLY
>all the side content is DLC
>no PC VR support which sucks for PC bros
Overall I give the game an 8/10, a great way to start the next trilogy.
>>the decision between the girls feels lazy
It is. That's a huge mark against the story. When the choice comes up you feel like you're picking from two different end games, but instead whatever you picked is instantly invalidated. Bad form.
I wouldn't say it's a "huge" mark against it, but it was certainly pointless and just didn't fit in with the rest of the game.
