I really don't get people's problems with it.
Buddy was a cunt in the Painful and she had already taken Joy. There was literally nothing that could be done to prevent the further shift in her personality or use of Joy.
I'm still pretty sure a primary reason people didn't like Joyful was because it didn't fit their preconceived notions of what they wanted to happen with the story.
