why aren't eGPUs a big thing yet?
Why aren't eGPUs a big thing yet?
because the ports needed for them arent a thing.
Right now thunderbolt is pretty much needed or you need to connect to your pcie slot in your laptop which is beyond a normie and not an elegant enough solution to mass produce.
USB C should change this but that still puts it 2 or 3 years into the future.
Expensive, and soon enough gaming laptops are going to replace desktops (with some sort of dock to plug a decent keyboard, monitor, mouse etc in)
>gaming laptops ever replacing desktops
Parts generate so much less heat now, and use less energy. For example laptop cards are now underclocked desktop ones instead of absolute shit. Obviously a dock would be needed for monitor, kb+m etc but I'm gonna guess in about 10 years laptops will be the clearly better option
Desktops will always have more space and better cooling.
Always.
And despite the fact parts are generating less heat they're also taking up more space, the highest end gpus have gradually crept up in space over and over again.
At the point where a gaming laptop is actually a thing it's already DoA because it'll be replaced with a gaming tablet a year later.
t. donglefag
>Desktops will always have more space and better cooling.
Yes, but eventually it won't matter. The gtx 1080 has a single 8 pin power connector, the difference between laptops and desktops is still very obvious, but it's definitely decreasing as parts generate less heat.
You've answered your own question with your pic.
The 1080gtx is also thicker than 2 modern laptops, folded, and stacked ontop of eachother.
>but it's definitely decreasing as parts generate less heat
So we can overclock them more in the future?
>gaming laptops are becoming more powerful and cheaper
Am I a pleb for preferring gayman laptops over desktop Sup Forums
No question.
damn. why the hell desktop becoming more and more obsolete for me.
Yes, you're limited by a fixed resolution and upgrade options, aside from external gpu's and ram, are either nonexistent or require a certain level of knowledge and in some cases soldering to do.
Laptops still suffer the inane issue that you're turning a laptop into a desktop to solve the issues of the laptop. If that doesn't help figures that you're screen on the laptop is one of the first things to die if not outright the hard drive or power port going to shit.
Revolving back to the general idea that you're using desktop management to solve the problems of the laptop obviously show that laptops will never become a desktop. It's a redundant mongoloid problem of simply understanding that the laptop exist simply as an mobile device would rather then trying to rethink the desktop as it stands now, because your solutions revolve around turning a laptop into a desktop.
The reality you just want a micro tower to model of your micro cock.
we had this thread yesterday where that question was answered and then some
not for at least a few years and still probably never
Because you either travel and make actual use of the laptop, or you've sunk far deep into your ass with a false sense of idealism in your purchase, because you're to stubborn to admit you made a mistake trying to turn a laptop into a desktop.
If I have a gaming laptop that is 1080p, I should be gaming in window'd 720p right? Asking for a friend.
Obviously, a laptop is a more expensive prebuilt with shittier quality parts, more points of failure, and absolutely no room for upgrade or repair.
Laptops won't ever become the mainstream unless they become easier to take apart and replace parts in.
Also it's very difficult to build your own laptop, and most enthusiasts like building their own rigs. It's not gonna happen.
My low end 700 pound laptop can run a lot of games at 1080p medium 60 fps. I'd say 1080p is the standard unless your laptop is very low end.
laptops will never ever replace desktops you laptopfag
>will last 4 years if that
>everything's solded together, can't upgrade
>fragile, if you drop it you're fucked
>20 pounds
>2 hour battery life
>shit mobile cpu's
If you're buying a monitor, and keyboard and mouse to go with it anyway, why not just buy a desktop you tard??
>Yes, but eventually it won't matter.
Except you're paying a really hefty premium for a lesser experience.
That card packed into a notebook will easily cost you a few grands whereas it's not even half a grand at better performance in a desktop.
I see, thanks britbong.
Thats fine, if your games can't run at 60 I'd switch to 720p though.
Because they are fucking stupid
True.
I guess that make sense. I travel everyday and desktops are genuinely become obsolete for me. Most stuff I can do in computer back then can be done with my phone. The other stuff can be done with my laptop. I use my PC today just for a repository and that about to be replaced again with my external HDD.
And I like LAN games so getting to my m8's house and play games with them is just so much convenient with my laptop.
>gaming laptops are going to replace desktops
No.
I own a gaming laptop and laptops are never going to be a replacement for desktops. They get significantly hotter (even the high end models), they're much harder to clean, replacing parts is an impossibility without consulting the manufacturer. Not to mention that some parts, e.g. keyboards and touchpads in particular, get dirty easily and thus would have to be replaced at least once throughout the lifecycle of the device, which is a big hassle if you have to send the laptop in every time.
Desktops are significantly more convenient and comfortable. You can replace any part whenever you want. You can clean them easily. They stay nice and cool. And you also get much more powerful computers for much less money. The laptop for which I paid 2000€ would have cost not even 1000€ if I built it as a desktop.
>what is a mitx build
Some are even smaller/lighter than the suped up gaming laptops. Shit, they even have little handles you can carry them around in
If by laptop you mean tablet then yes.
mitx? You mean like a mini tower or something? That's interesting. Thanks for the suggestion user, I may considering it.
>Laptops won't ever become the mainstream
what the fuck are you talking about?
>Also it's very difficult to build your own laptop, and most enthusiasts like building their own rigs
it's impossible to build a laptop on your own. and who the fuck cares about "enthusiasts".
Pretty sure by this point, most people (casuals) play PC games with laptops. That's pretty mainstream for me.
>USB C should change this but that still puts it 2 or 3 years into the future.
More like 2 or 3 years closer to your death lol.
What did he mean by this?
>more points of failure,
We Sup Forums now? Why not TOUGHbook for gaming in syrian warzone?
toptenreviews.com
you do know that the people who invent there low power solutions are using high powered desktops for design automation
>need a eGPU for my laptop for LAN parties
>haven't bought the $100 dock I need
>will last 4 years if that
Depends on the brand and build, this can vary wildly
>everything's solded together, can't upgrade
What is MXM
>fragile, if you drop it you're fucked
Most higher end laptops can take a beating
>20 pounds
kek
>2 hour battery life
Depends on the load, mine lasts 9+ hours just browsing
>shit mobile cpu's
They use desktop CPU's now, no difference
>If you're buying a monitor, and keyboard and mouse to go with it anyway, why not just buy a desktop you tard??
A laptop really only needs a mouse, pad and numpad for gaming.
Corsair has some pretty ones, heard they're good too, pic related is the 380T
i use an i7 surface pro 4. am i worse
Why would you do that tho
I recommend a super slim form factor if you can. I just built one using this case, Silverstone's ML08
because it allowed me to stop bringing both an ipad and a laptop to work.
Those are pretty good too but I recommended Corsair because here in Spain only some big brands like them have quality products, most lesser known brands that usually have really good stuff don't even sell here and getting it imported is not onyl a pain in the ass but also expensive as fuck
>he didn't buy the patrician's tablet
I have this dilemma with Lenovo because their top of the line products are pretty fucking good but their design is so fucking horrid that it just puts me off
I just checked the price on Amazon and holy fuck it's so expensive.
Why didn't you bought a thinkpad or at least buy other countless tablet+laptop combo from other brands. Assuming that you did bought it instead getting it free.
If you're using that to play video games, you're a terrible example of a human being. If you're using that to do anything else, you're fine.
Horrid? You mean the Thinkpad ones? You kidding me m8?
Not him but surface pros are the best laptop/tablet combo you can buy, and yeah, they're crazy expensive as a result.
Mini PCI works just fine for them.
>1720 dollarydoos
>only got 512 gb HDD
>Seems to be just a dual core i7
I'm not buying it
I do admit the design is rad as hell, especially the keyboard
that was first choice actually, if that's the model that detaches. i got a slammin deal though, for just1k the sp4 i7 is well worth it
i mostly use it at work for car service manuals and with my usb oscilloscope borescope and obd2\vag-com interface, at home i do emulate on it, and skyrim/fallout at lunch break, most gaming i stream xbox1 tho
just compare the 220T user posted to the Surface Pro 4 or even to the cheaper Lenovo Yoga Book
If they release something on par with the SP4 that I can use both as drawing tablet and PC and looks like the Yoga Book I'll buy it inmediately
>it's impossible to build a laptop on your own.
It's not, it's just stupidly expensive and not worth it. I found a site that would sell harder to get components for laptops and it wasn't worth it. With gpus costing about a thousand burgers for them.
i can definitely see all the PC manufactures pushing products like this weather the switch succeeds or not
It's the 90s aesthetic man, you just don't get it
Yeah the whole point of the Thinkpad line is "FUCK your Macbook clones"
If you want a Macbook clone you've got 50,000 fucking manufacturers to choose from
Is a 2540p?
512gb ssd, also the processor is misleading because it's not a "mobile" i5/i7 like they use in most laptops, it's between that and real processors used in real computers, so it's a tier above most laptops with a much smaller formfactor.
>believing your apple salesman so blindly
damn lad, have some self respect once in your life.
>aptops are going to replace desktops (with some sort of dock to plug a decent keyboard, monitor, mouse etc in)
doesn't a giant spread of peripherals and hardware kind of defeat the purpose of a laptop
But Lenovo is slowly moving towards much prettier designs, the new ThinkPads are slowly looking more like their Yoga line of laptops wich is pretty much the most gorgeuous thing in the market.
I just need the performance of a ThinkPad, the features of a Surface and the Design of a Yoga, right now the SP4 is the only match
Yes, although the newer high end laptops have mechanical keyboards and high quality screens. The only thing necessary is a mouse. The price discrepancy is also dropping as well, with companies like sager getting close to desktop prices with their laptops.
i was bringing a tablet to work for service manual and bluetooth obd2 use and a laptop for oscilloscope, borescope and flashing/standalone tuning, and i fucking hate trying to use a laptop while sitting in driver's seat, and i do minimal, or streamed gaming anyway, so the surface line completely matched what my needs were.
also i was bringing a 4g hotspot with me or killing my phone with tethering all the time so i got the one with 4g lte
i don't use my desktop or laptop at all anymore and i take this thing fuckin everywhere so i always have a decently quick windows pc with internet and all my shit on it 24\7. i use a galaxy gear s2 watch as my phone now because i pull my surface out for everything anyhow
amazon.com
Got this laptop, how i do?
ASUS ZX53VW 15.6" Gaming Laptop, NVIDIA, GTX 960M 4GB, FHD, Intel Core i5-6300HQ, 8GB DDR4, 512GB SSD, Backlit keyboard, Microsoft signature image, Anti-Glare Matte Display.
830$ with tax
Lenovo is also releasing a new line of ThinkPads this year designed to look more 1995 than ever
the thing is, the power of a desktop 1080 and laptop 1080 is the same now. the desktop 1080 has higher Ghz, but the laptop 1080 has 1/4 more cuda cores and higher TDP, making their performance essentially the same
Pretty shit, you could of done better with a Lenovo or some other brand. In fact my Lenovo had a 970m and a 4k screen with an i7 for a hundred dollars more.
>4k
jesus christ that's fuckin gorgeous
Lmao, that does look like something from 1995, I'm interested in how they will improve the design for the ThinkPad Yoga next year, because it's looking like an amazing option
this year? you done fucked up, you can get a 1050ti laptop for the same price, which has the performance equivalent of 965-970M
Sorry I meant SUHD since it's not a 4000x2160 resolution but instead a 3890x2160
Lenovo Y series is shit. and Sup Forums pushing the Thinkpad meme is just as equally shit.
thanks for letting me disregard you completely now
Yes good goy, by an overpriced Asus with worse specs instead.
Whatever floats your boat. You still paid to much for an outdated laptop.
>16''
>underclocked 960
>paying a premium for ricer shit
shit that drains battery needlessly and no programs other than windows and some games use it. 4k and UHD is shit meme resolution
looks pretty good to me, its going to be mostly a runescape machine and other light gaming while i 'work' at my job. sorry its not a memepad or 1080 sli garbage ;)
implying Chink shit laptops that spy on you are any better.
Get Sager or get out you faggot
Anything over 160x120 is a meme resolution fag.
I don't buy the laptops can't game meme that tech illiterate poor fags always like to push, because I travel a lot and have a very nice gaming laptop for on the go and a desktop for home.
That being said, the stuff OP is talking about feels a tad redundant, if you want the extra power just get a desktop, the biggest pros for laptops is their portability, if you start having to pack external gpus to take your laptop places it sort of defeats some of the benefits and convenience of the laptop.
feel free to provide examples of your $900 4k laptops
>buying an overpriced "gaming laptop" to play a game any $100 toastertop could play
I have an Asus laptop and it's been going strong for years now, you are a meme.
>I know nothing about computer tech beyond memes Sup Forums spouts
i have a thinkpad laptop thats running xp from 2005 and it lags on runescape. 15 fps isnt fun.
i been looking for laptops to buy for over a month now and this one keeps coming back as a great buy compared to all the other ones on the market.
nice memes, greentext some more my dutiful dude and pay attention to your class your shitposting in.
>a 5 year old core i5 thinkpad can't run runescape
Nigga the Dell laptop has the same spec and $100 cheaper
A 960 will work well enough for light shit, but if you can find a good deal on anything that has a 970 mobile variant it's a much better deal, I just bought one on open box for around $700 and it outperforms the 960 in a laptop a friend has by a noticeable amount.
FUCK IT'S SO GOOD
>glossy screen
>less HDD space
I made the right decision, I actually used that laptop and i didnt like it.
>2005 laptop
I can get one of those for $15 at the flea. Meanwhile 100 dollary doos can get you a decent i5 that will run it at high just fine
Think you meme'd at the wrong person friend.
>a 960m isn't overkill for a decade old mmo
