I'm at Mount Nibelheim. The beginning of the game was very strong with a lot of really affecting content. But ever since Shinra skyscraper it's been a cavalcade of mediocre writing, padded content, and tons of pointless grind content.
I'm seeing a lot of the same problems with XIII's writing, story, and pacing in VII.
Plus the soundtrack is fairly mediocre compared to even FFV's soundtrack.
Because it is. OP is dead wrong about the soundtrack though.
Jace Reyes
you're just jaded. it was good back in the day but it glossed over in comparison to the newer tittles; you just have to appreciate the fact that it set the standard for current rpgs
Josiah Green
i just finished it. i enjoyed it, but like every other final fantasy i played, i got kinda bored by the end of it. found myself running from the battles in northern cave or spamming summons. idk, chrono trigger was the only jrpg i wasnt sick of by the end of it.
Mason Morales
How? With shit tons of padding? With stylish gimmicks over substance? I can't think of anything exceptional other than the Victory theme.
Ryan Gonzalez

I'm having a great time, really one of the best games I've played in awhile period. Writing is weak occasionally, yeah, but in general they go in depth with many of the characters side stories.
Also the gameplay itself is fucking fun and challenging for a JRPG.
>using the enemy skill materia >those minigames >not using death sentence and then haste on and enemy you want dead
Kevin Thomas
>i got kinda bored by the end of it. I played it over a decade ago with the PC version when my friend let me borrow it. I get you when you say you got bored at the end, I got bored at the crater and dropped it.
Sebastian Brooks
>challenging what? literally one of the easiest games i have ever played. only in the final dungeon do the enemies get somewhat tough and by then, you probably broke the game by having all of the op shit.
Chase Stewart
>padding
Maybe you just have a mental disorder like ADHD?
>I can't think of anything exceptional other than the Victory theme.
Yes, I'm pretty sure you have a mental disorder now.
Most of the tracks lack any sense of instrumental diversity. This is partially a flaw of the presets used, but consider the Decisive Battle theme from V and Overworld themes across the game. While not exceptional, they at least have coherent and sophisticated melodies that develop throughout.
I don't know why Nobuo phoned in this soundtrack which lacks tune and lacks creativity.
Lucas Morgan
Composition is fine, but the sample rate sucks donkey balls.
Jack Johnson
>Final Fantasy >challenging
Juan Hernandez
you can criticize the story but bitch don't you fucking dare talk dirty about FF7 music Bitch I'll cut you. 7 had quality and quantity, literally 95% of the music is good, memorable and filled with feelings fuck off
Luis Richardson
Good Final Fantasy soundtracks:
I, IV, V, X, XIII (bad game), XV
Rest are mediocre with one or two standout tracks.
Thomas Nguyen
XV is a bad game too though.

>Plus the soundtrack is fairly mediocre compared to even FFV's soundtrack.
Fine, you managed to double bait me once I realized you were actually also calling V's soundtrack bad. Fuck you.
Brandon Rodriguez
You are entitled to your opinion. Mine is that the writing is excellent throughout, as is the music. Nothing felt like padding to me. Call it nostalgia goggles if you feel uncomfortable with someone else having a different opinion than you.
Jackson Johnson
Not bad, I like a lot of it. But it's not exceptional compared to standouts like IV and X.
Christian Parker
>I'm seeing a lot of the same problems with XIII's writing, story, and pacing in VII.
There was more wrong with XIII than just the writing, story and pacing. And even with just that the story could at least be understood without slogging through dozens of datalogs. Plus the characters in VII aren't anywhere near as bad as in XIII; Lightning is just simplified Cloud with none of the depth, Snow is a learning-disabled manchild, Vanille is kooky just for the sake of being kooky etc.
>Plus the soundtrack is fairly mediocre compared to even FFV's soundtrack.
Now I KNOW you're baiting.
Julian Gonzalez
Get some taste pleblord.
>Uematsu's approach to composing the game's music was to treat it like a film soundtrack and compose songs that reflected the mood of the scenes rather than trying to make strong melodies to "define the game", as he felt that approach would come across too strong when placed alongside the game's new 3D visuals. As an example, he composed the track intended for the scene in the game where Aerith Gainsborough is killed to be "sad but beautiful", rather than more overtly emotional, creating what he feels is a more understated feeling.[4] Uematsu has additionally said that the soundtrack has a feel of "realism", which also prevented him from using "exorbitant, crazy music".[8]
If only more modern games would do this and lay off the fucking electric guitars and full horn sections.
Jayden Long
I thought FF7 was a great game for the longest time shortly after it came out, but I went back and replayed it for the first time in almost ten years a few weeks back and I can see it's clearly not as good as I thought it was when I was a teenager. The writing is really terrible but that could just be because it got a piss poor translations. It almost plays as if the technical support people with zero writing experience did the localization for it.
Parker Robinson
Seriously people, Nobuo was spent for good melodies in VII. Lots of throwaway stuff since he had to do it all himself. Same thing with XII and Sakimoto.
There's a very good reason why X is the best soundtrack: it's because no one composer was overwhelmed by a shit-ton of creative work.
Eli James
Except that attitude of "music should be felt, not heard" is exactly the worst trend in movie music, exemplified by Hans Zimmer and countless other hacks. Why would Nobuo go back to highly melodic music in IX and X then?
Luis Butler
IV's soundtrack is great. Lesser to VI, XIII-2, VII, V and III though. X is mid.
I can't believe you didn't care for Seto's theme by the way.
Benjamin Ward
I can appreciate missing the theme of Midgar, but exploring the world is a joy in itself. I mean, you've already been to the Chocobo Ranch, outran the Midgar Zolom, marched incognito in the Junon Parade, played around in the Gold Saucer, escaped Corel Prison and won your first Chocobo Race, visited Zach's family at Gongaga (hope you brought Tifa and Aeris), and saw the tear-jerking moment when Nanaki learned the true fate of the Warrior Seto. And now you're at mysterious Nibelheim, unburnt despite Cloud's recollection and everyone's hiding something.
The world at large is great and the stories are on-point. If you can't handle the disappointment from the scenery change after Midgar, the fault's really just in you.
Liam Reed
Not to mention it was riddled with typos and syntax errors i.e "This guy are sick" and "Offcourse!"
Sebastian Barnes
Not that guy but it wasn't one of the better themes in the game..
Carson Garcia
Why are you holding up demonstrably inferior soundtracks as superior? It goes like this:
FFVI>FFVII>FFX>FFVIII>FFIX
Uematsu just didn't have much time to work on the FFVII score, which is why it's fairly simple compared to some of his other works.
Easton Brooks
>demonstrably inferior Then demonstrate how they are inferior.
Jordan Jackson
He wasn't the only composer on X and did less than half the arrangements.
Asher Evans
Just listen to them. The music demonstrates itself ;)
Evan Rodriguez
I was merely saying that since he is by the Nibelheim mountains, he's just heard it recently, but apparently didn't care and felt the soundtrack is lacking right this instant.
Personally it's somewhere in the thirties area in the soundtrack. Those Chosen by the Planet being my favorite.
Grayson Nguyen
God you're a fucking idiot.
Lincoln Sanders
>people low-rating Final Fantasy 8's OST
Even Nobuo admits it was the best work he'd ever done. With tracks like:
Liberi Fatali Eyes on Me Succession of Witches Maybe I'm a Lion Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec The Man with the Machine Gun The Extreme
And others, it stands head and shoulders above any other Final Fantasy title to date. You could see personal preference putting another title in first or even second place, but if Final Fantasy 8 isn't in your top three, you don't know enough about the OSTs to even be weighing in.
Caleb Cox
I thought he said 9 was his best? Anyway I agree with all of those except Eyes on Me which was gayer than Boy George in a frilly pink dress.
Nah, he said 9 was his personal favorite. I think he also said that the best track was One Winged Angel. But 8 is the one he holds as his best work.
And Eyes on Me is crazy popular throughout all of Asia. That one track has been remastered a half dozen times and sold there.
Camden Rogers
>>This is... >...The warrior who fought against the Gi. He kept them from taking even one step into Cosmo Canyon. >But he was never able to return to town... >Look, Nanaki. Look at your father, at the warrior, Seto.

I'm one of those anons who think VIII is pure shit but the OST is fucking god tier. Besides the ones you listed, I really like VIII's town themes. Fisherman's Horizon (and its symphonic versions) and Breeze are both good.
