Awaken my child, and embrace the glory that is your birthright. Know that I am the Overmind; the eternal will of the Swarm, and that you have been created to serve me.

CONSTRUCT
The Overminds will was enslaved. He created Kerrigan to give the zerg a chance to free the zerg.
>By the way, Cerebrate, I'm actually the good guy and secretly plotting against the real evil guys but you won't find that out for another 12 years

That better not be true.

I often wonder how things would have turned out had kerrigan been a sassy black girl
I thought she was a mulatto.
She is black
she's muslim
but is she?

you dumb fucking kid
Starcraft 2 fucked the lore.
Fuck nu-Blizzard
nah she would have blown herself up during the zerg invasion if she were
When's the next starleague?
this retcon pissed me off more than anything.
hey remember cerebrates? well they're gone now and its just kerrigan plus a bunch of queen whores.
Systems functional
You want a piece of meat boy?
Kerrigan murdered them all in broodwar, remember? They were all trying to make a new overmind by fusion dancing and the only one she could convert was you.
Besides, without the Overmind, Cerebrates were gigantic helpless weakspots, so they had to go and Queens were just the next logical step.
The loss of the Cerebrates is an awful thing, but it was a necessity that was apparent even before SC2
The Overmind was still itself before its death, he got off the Xel'naga stuff early. It just knew that they were coming back and one of them was pissed, and it happened to be the one he couldn't actually stop.
The Cerebrates were also pretty much dead by the end of Brood War, with the last living one being the player, who likely died off without a proper Overmind. Queens acted with more independence and could be more easily controlled and replaced, while also not posing a threat to Kerrigan should they be killed.
Remember when Starcraft 2 retconned the Overmind to be a sympathetic, enslaved underling to the REAL villain?
>against the real evil guys
and who are they, I didn't play SC2?
No. Overmind was still a maniacal asshole who didn't trust the other races to get shit done, so he said fuck it and had the Zerg start eating them.
His enslavement ended a loooong time ago.

The Hybrids (Protoss + Zerg DNA spliced together by NARUDURAN)/a Xel'Nigger
WELL DONE
what were the favourite custom maps on starcraft?
Are we gonna have WEposting for another RTS?
man some people did some creative things with the tools they had
So the Xel'naga who first worked on the Zerg, Amon, imparted a little bit of his will on them.
Amon, as it turns out, is an evil asshole who took over most of Kerrigan's mind after the Overmind died, and in turn made her an evil asshole.
As it turns out Amon just wants to eat everything to start over in his image, and to do that he was gonna have the Zerg and Protoss merge into Hybrids. The last part is hinted at in the Brood War Secret Mission.
That user is BSing because Amon pretty much turns Kerrigan Chaotic Evil throughout Brood War and the first act of SC2. She gets better after having a Xel'naga nuke dropped on her face.
The Thing was always cool.
Some of Obsidian's RP maps were neat. Shit, I even joined the same clan as him.
Mountain Climbers is another one.
Oh, and Racoon City.
You're lucky. The plot got too big and also too shit. Amon is pretty awful as a villain but Blizzard can't come up with anything else, so they keep him around for the co-op too.
It's a fucking shame Metzen didn't die of a cocaine overdose in 2002.
He ruined Warcraft's, Diablo's, and finally Starcraft's lore, leaving behind his fucking corruption fetish like the telltale skidmarks of his absolutely shit writing.
user, I'm pretty sure he's the one who also started those stories.
He's also a super cool dude, if the post-retirement stuff Ghostcrawler said is anything to go by.
>started Diablo's story
nigger
no
he's a george lucas at best
If he started them, it's kind of sad. That means he wrote an okay story, then went to complete shit within a decade.
StarCraft 2 was a mistake.

> Amon is an evil asshole who took over karrigan's mind in SC BW
wow, this series really is complete garbage
>Amon, as it turns out, is an evil asshole who took over most of Kerrigan's mind after the Overmind died, and in turn made her an evil asshole.
I don't think this was ever actually stated.

Man, the original starcraft was so amazing.
I was sad when the overmind died in the original starcraft.
wtf spoilers
The Overmind was a great character, he could have had a glorious return/rebirth in SC2, but instead his character gets dragged through the mud along with the rest of the story.
Remember when Starcraft was great
WE
Good.
Don't do it. BW was the end of the series, the rest is up to your interpretation.
how did blizzard decline so hard in their game design and writing.
WoW might be the perfect example of a game that has gotten worse with every expansion. It's been difficult seeing what they've done to their franchises over the years.
Fuck no. The campaign is shit, at least WoL. The MP is... I mean it was good enough, but a far cry from how great BW is.
>Old Blizzard will never be back
I don't know what's worse. EA buying studios and killing them, or this.
Why are you doing this, Kerrigan? Look, I know about your past, I mean I've heard the rumours. I know you were part of those experiments with the Zerg, that Mengsk came and saved you. But you don't owe him this. Hell... I've saved your butt plenty of times.
Golem was always neato. I liked to spam Zerglings and hide them underground until the game dropped into single frames whne I unburrowed 'em all.
The Digimon RPG was alright.
When they figured out how to turn the lights off so you could stack buildings, turret defence got fucking insane.
OH. OH. THAT SCHOOL RPG. I remember one of the students eventually leveled up into Uwe Boll.
And then there were the various "movies" people put together. They had fucking atrocious download times BUT I GLADLY WAITED THE 15 MINUTES IT TOOK TO GET ONE.
I remember there being some kind of "penguin movie" I think, but I can't remember anymore. It was so long ago. It was probably one of my favourites.
Remember the Cyber Sex Hotel map? I kept trying to figure it out like a puzzle, exploring it, expecting beacons to do things despite being renamed to "bed", like maybe it'd tell stories to me if certain conditions were met. I completely failed to comprehend at the time it was literally just for two people to go into and find a room.
I was a god at the Dodgeball games.
Cat and Mouse was always fun. A long time ago, being a dumb kid, I jokingly used my ultralisk to hump the other cat's ultralisk, and in doing so met a dude that introduced me to his SRC (Some Random Channel) RP and chat buddies. I went by Inoen at the time, a mishearing of Imoen, and pretended to be a girl for a while.
Eventually I took the name RedSeole after feeling "inspired" by another guy with the name BlueSoul. I remember Rolly, Snow, Vampyprincess, that one emotionless girl...
...
Those were good times. Stupid, but good. ...I no longer have any of their contacts, on Yahoo, on ICQ, on AIM, because I no longer remember my usernames.
One time, Snow was swapping items from a Diablo 2 account to a mule, and I saw a unique item with +1 to all skills. I grabbed it and never told him. I think he thought Rolly, who was in the game also, took it and was lying to him when he said he didn't.
I miss them all.
>Prime zerg as a race of alien cavemen
>The Overmind was actually a good guy who created Kerrigan to free the zerg race from slavery
>The hybrid were the big bad all along
>Kerrigan and Raynor get back together.
>The Kerrigan of SC1 effectively dies in the first fucking mission and gets her memory erased.
>Cat and Mouse was always fun.
SEVENTY TWO.
I HAD SEVENTY TWO VERSIONS OF CAT AND MOUSE.
WHY THE FUCK WERE SO MANY RETARDS OPENING THE MAP JUST TO EDIT ONE OR TWO THINGS THEN SLAP THEIR NAME IN THE MISSION PROPERTIES?
I think its executive meddling. It cannot be all his fault.
Blizzard was a smaller company back in the 90s.
Then WoW happened
Not all versions were the same. Some had vastly different maps, units, special units, special abilities, power ups...
Even with version on ostensibly the same map you could see additional abilities here and there. Mostly it was a case of everyone having their own idea of balance, or wanting to tweak the game to be even better.
There were a lot of Golems, too.
I know sc2's ending got a lot of a shit, but I am a complete sucker for endings like that.
It was jarring, going from sc1 to sc2, but then again, a decade had passed.
>tfw no goddess to save
I'd like to see indies make retro games in styles reminiscent of Starcraft 1 or Diablo 2. Not in super hd or whatever, but legitimate love letters to these classic fucking games.
She is half korean though

strip sakura :^)
Typical indie dev would read your post and make some pixelated 2deep4u monstrosity
It's been a decade since video games were good. I hate anything.
The Cat and Mouse PVP was fun, but I liked the one where you were a team against the CPU better.
You would weave a whole matrix of pylons and link bases together.
That is to say, those games had a sort of... grittiness to their visual and audio quality. These day's everything's ultra super clear and there's some kind of... fuzz? No. Grain. There's grain missing.
I go back and listen to Starcraft's soundtrack, or Diablo 2 or Diablo 1's soundtrack, and the audio quality from the old days ADDED something to it. It's something you can't quite replicate in this day and age. An auditory aesthetic. Matt Uelman can make all the torchlight music he wants but there's subtly different, not just in how his musical style has changed and evolved, but in just the sheer audio quality that makes it slightly less engaging.
The same goes for visual styles of games. Those low res games tried so hard to look higher res than they actually were, and they were all the better for it, visually. A unique style you don't see replicated ANYWHERE.
Shit, it's only recently low poly has started to see a minor resurgence in indie to remind me of the Quake days.
>Shit, it's only recently low poly has started to see a minor resurgence in indie to remind me of the Quake days.
This makes me so happy
"Muslim" isn't a race.
She's also not a suicide bomber.
I love Brood War more, but I agree it was fantastic.
they mean gameplay rather than story
Story was too fucking stupid for me to ignore it, so nah
You've been paying attention to Strafe, yeah? I'd buy that game just on the aesthetic alone. I'm not completely sold on the procedural generated roguelike stuff, but it feels like they've put a lot of effort into making it feel like the DooM and Quake era, with doomlifts, monster closets, the texture resolution and low poly aesthetic. It pulls off the retro aesthetic quite well without completely sinking to pixelshit.
It's an example of what I'd like to see more of in the industry. Instead of just going to the extreme, pick an era, pick an example, and run with that. Shovel Knight did that, to a degree, and that's part of why I love that. Now this. I hope I can find more games with like 90's era computer game graphics going forward into the future.
I mean, low poly, low texture resolution... pairing these with a decent aesthetic can open up modern games to create the sort of shit we could only dream about back in the 90's with EXTREME ease. Instead we just keep making the same shit over and over, but with better graphics that keep restricting the scope to arm's length instead of actually expanding what a game can do.
>it's a love story between a man & a woman
Reminder that Metzen actually said this
