Almost all those pokemon have spikes or stripes because their design demanded it. You can't have a porcupine or rhyno pokemon without spikes. You can't have a bee or tiger pokemon without stripes. Meanwhile gen 3 has trash like this.

They could have given it steel pincers. They could have given it armor plating. They could have NOT given it clown makeup. They could have given it huge antennae that could be used as whips. Crawdaunt could have been awesome, but they got lazy and didn't want to spend too much time or effort designing one pokemon so they basically hit the randomize button.

You're wrong. Houndour, Murkrow, Sneasel, and Midreavus are only available in Kanto for starters. Johto Pokemon like Aipom and Heracross are only available through headbutting. That whole game feels like Kanto 2.0.
