Because it had fun games and there was no competition for handheld devices

>shitty backlight
what, there was no backlight. At all.

>how did it sell
Its a fucking game boy ADVANCE nigger, it had a lot games and it was super ADVANCED

>Was it just pokemon?

yes

That model didn't even have a backlight.

gameboy advance was my jam
but gameboy sp was my shit
superstar saga is one of my all time favorite games

The only competition outside of Japan was Gamegear. Gamegear had like 1.5 hour battery life.

That was the answer I wanted to hear without even knowing it

Underage spotted

Since I was a shit brained kid the console sold me on just being able to play my game boy and game boy color games on a bigger screen.

Everything else was just a bonus for me.

How so user?

dbz: supersonic warriors was awesome too

What other handhelds were even competing at the time? Wonderswan in Japan?

>Was it just pokemon?

Pretty much.

no it fucking didn't

the advance had the worst library of any nintendo handheld

But thats where your wrong, it had backwards compatibility so it actually had the best library of any handheld at the time

Checkmate atheists

>4 sound channels
>only 4 colors

How did this sell? Was it pokemon?

>shitty backlight
Didn't have one, have you even played a GBA?
>How did this sell?
No competition
>Game Gear
>In the same era as the GBA
Is literally ANYBODY in this thread over the age of 18? Am I getting meme'd on here? What's going on?

No competition
It was literally all we had

But it only lived for like 3 years
The games were fucking weird

That makes me underage? Also never mentioned competition

this is the new normal Sup Forums, they need to expand /vr/ another gen so I never have to comeback

You are delusional.

/vr/ will not and can not and MUST NOT ever change

>Nintendo ds

I use to play circle of the moon and ff1/2 for years cause Im naturally bad at vidya. Ive never owned an snes and don't have autism, so i didn't notice the sound quality. It also has a shit load if jrpg's

>at the time
>nintendo ds
look man I don't know if you are a timer traveler but if you are can you take me to hitler with these blue prints of what appears to be a nuclear bomb?

Skipped the og and got a sp but from whatI hear it improved a lot.

Because you didn't expect a portable console on the likes of a 3DS when you bought a Game Boy. You knew that you got a simpler games console. It sounded a bit shittier but you could play it while taking a shit so we accepted it.

No competition.
No Wonderswan Color outside japan and all you faggots hated the NGPC so that had no successor.
PSP wasn't around yet.
Smartphone garbage wasn't born yet.
The only thing on a global scale that was even the tiniest threat was JAVA phone games, and you sometimes had to pay fees for those, plus not all providers and models had every game available either. Plus, the controls were almost always dogshit because a phone keypad, even one with a "d-pad" in the upper-middle, does not make for a good or comfortable way to play a vast majority of games.
Don't get me wrong, there were a few exceptions, like DOOM RPG, but those were made with the limitations of mobile gaming in mind, and thus were more successful as a result.
On top of that, though, you had to run the risk of "Do I really have enough battery charge to use playing a game when I might actually need my phone to make and/or receive a call soon?"
Oh, and TI-83 Plus games, I guess. Sort of. If you're really that desperate.

superstar saga and the DBZ RPGs

buu's fury was the fucking shit

Nope, it was Tetris.
Welcome to neo-Sup Forums.

No comepetition.
Lack of backlight was standard back then as backlight was only on "Luxuary" portable stuff (GBLight was ludicrously expensive)
While there were a fucking ton of SNES remakes the original stuff still overshadowed it by far.
And it was essentially one of the last bastions of sprite based games for the peeps who were into that since PC and the Consoles were all into SHINY 3D and Indies were yet to make a notable mark.

>gba ports
>cropping games because it has less pixels than an SNES renders
>add shitty voice acting like YAHOO MAMA MIA or HA HU HA HYAAA
>locking any cool new content that might make the purchase worthwhile behind e-reader bullshit or gamecube linking
What was it all worth, baby?

Sadly my time machine broke and I'm stuck here. Trump being in power was dark times. Eventually he'll ban pal imports

>How did this sell?
Video game consoles had a healthy number of video games to play back in my day, that's how.

Back to cum with you

>implying I didn't own one myself. Just saw one at a salvation army. Popped in my Ruby and felt the strain in my eyes

>While there were a fucking ton of SNES remakes the original stuff still overshadowed it by far.
Maybe in terms of quality, but definitely not in terms of sales.
>And it was essentially one of the last bastions of sprite based games for the peeps who were into that since PC and the Consoles were all into SHINY 3D and Indies were yet to make a notable mark.
Funny that you mention this, since a notable chunk of GBA games, good or not, abused the fuck out of pre-rendered sprites.

I can't hate on the thing. It's how I first played Zelda 1/2, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros. 3. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga introduced me to RPGs.

Oh yeah, and Pokeymans. They really did try to make it compatible with the classics, but it wasn't technically feasible without huge cost overruns, and they later made up for it with remakes so it's moot now. Gen I/II were technically flawed and kind of broken, which is why nobody plays them competitively anymore. Hoenn is one of the better regions in the series, for being basically the Galapagos Islands of Pokemon. Blaziken remains my favorite starter, hands down.

About the form factor: SP was an improvement for battery and backlighting but I would've preferred the wide taco design instead of a clamshell with squished shoulder buttons.

TI-83 plus games! My nigga! You just brought back some fond ass memories of playing shitty megaman, shitty tetris and shitty galaxan in class.

>How did this sell?
Was there a better handheld available in the early 2000's? You think the N-Gage should have given it a run for its money or something?

>want to mod my original gba to have a backlit screen
>too cheap to pay for what people want for a backlit screen and I have never sodered in my life

all the cool people play GBA on their gamecube my man

Its a bad handheld. Mine brokedown due to battery leakage, but its really subpar compared to the original gameboy

Because it played movies and shows

that one didnt have backlight

Same

Castlevania, motherfucker.

The real question is...
Did anyone buy this shit?

>a notable chunk of GBA games, good or not, abused the fuck out of pre-rendered sprites
Name some that aren't the DKC ports, because I don't remember playing any

Those aren't all it played

youtube.com/watch?v=yO45qvDHXTE

>cropping games because it has less pixels than an SNES renders
This is what I hated the most about the GBA on a general level as a system.
It was fucking 2001, and they couldn't manage an SNES resolution screen or at least one that was double the original Game Boy's resolution? For fuck's sake!
>add shitty voice acting like YAHOO MAMA MIA or HA HU HA HYAAA
This also sucked, but was more of a library issue than a system one.

That being said, I always found it really weird when composers would use the more "8-bit Game Boy" fonts in their music. I mean, the song itself might be fine, but it was very juxtaposed considering the graphics. Felt a bit jarring at times.
Example: youtube.com/watch?v=Aud5JNaG1BM
My personal guess is that the games that did this were probably originally intended to be on the Wonderswan (which had a similar sound-graphics juxtaposition, but for all games due to its actual system limitations), but moved to GBA at the last minute. Probably not always the case though.

Here's something similar to, but not exactly, what I mean. Compare
youtube.com/watch?v=BlpPvka9LFQ&t=23m36s
to
youtube.com/watch?v=BlpPvka9LFQ&t=25m22s
Different games, same song. However, the latter is actually notably touched up and doesn't use the "8-bit game boy" sound.

Now for a game that actually was ported from WSC to GBA:
youtube.com/watch?v=AnIq_p0I6fM
youtube.com/watch?v=t0C_MwbgN2s
The latter is touched up, but you can still hear some of the "game boy"-ishness in it (though, more so in other songs in the soundtrack).

it's really comfy desu
hands get cramped after some time though

Yeah, but for every Mario remake there were at least 2 good other games, i mean, if we go by Mega Man, it suprisingly just shat out ONE remake (of a game that was never officially released in the west) and 10 "original" titles, and this was Capcom, Castlevania also didn't throw in the remake gauntlet and mainly made new entries.

It was mainly just Nintendo themselves that were doing the remake slobbering.

>Acting like GBA doesn't have a fuckton of good exclusives

Pretty sure he mentioned pokemon already

>because I don't remember playing any
Are you fucking serious, m80?
You've never at least shitposted this game here?
Lots of recent youngsters on Sup Forums apparently.
I've seen a handful of posts over the recent years that mention fond memories of bringing one into some class and playing behind a book.
I was already in college by the time it came out, so I missed that bus.

...

He said GOOD, as in "not overrated shit".

I already owned at sp at that point and the micro just looked like massive downgrade

I don't understand why people on Sup Forums need to false flag stuff they want to talk about.

Being sincere about a topic won't kill you, you know?

>what, there was no backlight. At all.

This. You had to mod the fucking thing to install one yourself.

Corrected with the SP but designed by someone who though the target demographic were cerebral palsy sufferers.

The same designer no doubt worked on the 3ds the uncomfortable piece of shit it was that you needed to buy a third party grip for to be tolerable unless you were a hyper-manlet.

B-b-but jewtendo are all about (((quality))) not rushing shit to market for more shekels.

You make it as if the Advance had backlight when it doesn't unless you modded it by adding the backlight hardware yourself, something nobody really did until very late in its life. Most users at the time bought the overhead light add-on. You would know this if you actually played it yourself.

The gba video was a small lived idea and only had a few releases before discontinuing. It's a small thing they decided to do and nothing more. You would know this if you experienced it yourself instead of assume that because it existed it must mean it was a feature the handheld itself was used for.

Two big giveaways. So it's almost as if you weren't alive when this existed when it was popular and too dated now for your mind to consider looking into it and see what it actually provided as a handheld. That or just poor and taking off your anger on the Advance you couldn't buy

>he doesn't like pokemon

I thought the same which is why I never got it.
Nowadays I kind of want one simply because it's so damn small. It also has a headphone jack.
I might just get an emulator portable instead, since I don't have an android phone and my current tablet can't be rooted.

>You've never at least shitposted this game here?
No, because I don't like JRPG that much. Also, that's still 5 games total out of a library of thousands of games, hardly "a good chunk"

And wasn't the DS like literally months away too, or was it even already release, i remember they were ludicrously close together because MUH THIRD PILLAR, and "We will still support the GBA" lies.

And there was no reason to get a micro when the DS was backwards compatible, had a larger screen and comfier to hold..

Man, the non-backlit screen on the original GBA was hard to see. Way worse than the Gameboy Color. I modded mine with some aftermarket sidelight thing but it was pretty washed out / low contrast.
The first Advance SP had a frontlight, which also sucked. Fortunately the SP2 had a true backlight and it looked pretty nice tbqh.
Gameboy Micro was also backlit but in every other way the screen seemed like a downgrade from the SP2.

Sorry, lad. I unfortunately have TASTE in my vidya.

So that's where they got the idea of the Switch """""controller"""""

Advance Wars, Boktai, 2 Castlevanias, Drill Dozer, F-Zero Climax, Golden Sun & sequel, Minish Cap, M&L Superstar Saga, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis Power Tour, Mega Man Battle Network series, Mega Man Zero series, Metroid Fusion & Zero Mission, Wario Land 4 and two Wario Ware games.

These already make the console worth it.

>still 5 games total
Okay, you're just pretending to be retarded at this point.
A vast majority of shovelware (among some other games, jap-only or not), had pre-rendered graphics.
And before you say "but shovelware doesn't count!" let me make it clear that I'm talking strictly about the numbers, not the quality.
Even some launch titles had pre-rendered graphics.

The gameboy advance sp is why I stopped liking nintendo. I had JUST gotten my gba for my birthday by begging my parents really hard. We were very poor so there was no chance I would get another game system for years. SIx months later the SP came out and I was enraged. Why the fuck did the original not have a backlight, it was obvious it needed it.

>How did this sell?
Games.

>Was it just pokemon?
Only 1 new Gen and a Remake? Nah.

Mega Man Battle Network
Mega Man Zero
Metroid Fusion/Zero Mission
Fire Emblem 7/8
Advance Wars 1&2
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
Medabots Kabuto/Kuwagata Versions
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and several remakes of older titles
Golden Sun 1&2
Riviera
Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga
Zelda Minish Cap
Dragon Ball Z like, 5 different ones
games mentioned as I was typing this.

And there's more that I just can't recall off the top of my head.

Just played supersonic warriors 2 hours ago.
Fuck, that was a fun game.

So, your argument is that the GBA was not one of the last bastions of sprite based games because shovelware and an handful of actually good titles used prerendered graphics?

I think it was more that he is pointing out that despite it being one of the last bastions it still had its own set of issues, namely said prerendered shovelware.

Well, low quality shovelware is bound to come to any mildly successful console

check out Dragon Ball Z - The Legacy of Goku series. it plays differently then supersonic warriors, but it's really good. it's also a gameboy advance game.

I've played all three of them, lost buu's fury though.
When will they make new DBZ games like this?

>So, your argument is that the GBA was not one of the last bastions of sprite based games
No, I was pointing out that it was funny that you mentioned that because I remember a -notable- (not "good" and not "majority") chunk of GBA games used pre-rendered graphics. It was not an argument, but a minor side-observation that was neutral in stance and free from ill-intent, though I suppose that text without tone could not hope to make my intentions entirely clear.

Then you acted like there was only DKC and nothing else that used pre-rendered graphics.

Shit, man. A side-note can simply be a side-note. Just because we're on Sup Forums doesn't mean that it has to be an argument and it doesn't have to be spiteful either. I wasn't trying to start shit, I was just making a addendum to your point in , which is actually pretty good to begin with and I honestly stand by it.
Fuck.

>SP AGS-101 can't be charged and have headphones in at the same time

>DS Lite can't play GBC/GB games

What the fuck am I supposed to get? Why is there no definitive hardware?

:(

LOL

fpbp

>DS Lite can't play GBC/GB games
GameYob nigger

I want to say fuck you but alot of my love for gba is from the fact it was my teen/early teen life so it's sort of a Nostalgia thing.

Still fuck you

It had a legitimately good library, but the hardware was objectively kinda shit

>using that underpowered piece of shit
enjoy your silky smooth 20 fps and shitty phone screen turned out its side (I bet one eye sees a reflection of the screen while the other doesn't)

I think he's talking about physical carts.
Also, IIRC, wouldn't GB/GBC not work on a DSLite even if you cut the edges of the DSLite's Slot 2 off and crammed the cart in?
I seem to recall someone trying it in a video, but I can't remember if it actually played the game successfully or not.

You're thinking backwards from the DS and 3DS.

Think forwards from the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. It had a bigger display and was capable of SNES-level games on the go.

GBA Micro

Fucking kids don't even know what it was before backlights.

It was carrying some clunky adapter with an external bulb, mind you this was back when leds weren't common yet either, so it was a shitty light. And either it ran on batteries, or on the gameboy, so it drained batteries even more.
And it also made the screen glossy so it wasn't a good solution either due to the shine.
And your parents would complain about it on the car.

But the GBA had a damn good library.

That was what the " LOL " was for, you silly goose.

Didn't that have the same GB/GBC issue as the DSLite, or am I remembering that wrong as well?

Mod the regular GBA with the AGS-101 screen.
And add a Hi-Fi speaker there as well along with a glass screen. You can thank me later.

That would be the 3DS.

Also forgot, the brightness near the battery compartment and also a rechargeable battery attachment.
