Even in 0 you can see that the only time he's truly happy is when he's fighting someone.
In 0 he's in two cages. The first is his slavish devotion to Saejima. The second is his leash being held by Sagawa.
By the end he's broken out of both of those cages and can live for himself; in this case living for himself means being a crazy violent psychopath.

People should have already gotten the answer in regards to this when he was talking to Sagawa. He said that he will now fully embrace the Yakuza life and have fun instead of being caged in. That's all his craziness in the series means.
