PS1 era Final Fantasy had gorgeous pre rendered background art, but Square fucked up and got rid of all the original high resolution versions so all we have left are the 320x240 ones in the games.
Some guy found a bunch of the HQ backgrounds from FF9 and it's painful to know the amount of detail that was lost when compressed for the PS1.
