What's your favorite roguelike, Sup Forums?
What's your favorite roguelike, Sup Forums?
DCSS
Mostly because it's the only one I've ever gotten sort of okay at
DoomRL
NetHack or ToME.
yup
Right now, it's between Sil and Poschengband.
Tough question.
Either
>Nethack
I suck at it but I fell in love with it when I was like 10 playing it on some linux distro. I was really playing falcon's eye and it had a gui, but that single game has shaped my outlook on games since. I still play it (now in ASCII) on occasion.
Or
>Dwarf Fortress
Stumbled onto this game in 2006, I've been playing it since.
Holy shit is that ToME? The old one? Version 2?
It's Sil. But the old TOME is also an angband variant, so you're not far off.
The one that doesn't make me mad
so none of them
except Elona+
I like PoschengbandR-PsuedoellipsisposchengbandRemix and Demon
In terms of shit I currently play, Caves of Qud. Haven't been playing much lately but I've been poking at CoQ a little since they picked up the pace of work on it. Other than that it's been months since I played any.
>PsuedoellipsisposchengbandRemix
What
I have ADOM, but I haven't really put time into it. I'd have to say Nethack since its the only roguelike I've played long term.
I feel a bit like a casul for enjoying brogue so much because it's basically a roguelike dumbed down as far as possible while still staying in the same genre, but god damn that game has such a good focus on what makes roguelikes fun with absolutely nothing extraneous that I can't help but love it.
Brogue is really fun. I like how items work in it.
DCSS because it's the only one I've beaten. It's funny because I almost gave up on that character at a few points. He had some bad mutations and came close to death a number of times, but he was also lucky as hell.
>2265 | D:2 | HP: 1/26 [poisoned by a snake]
>2266 | D:2 | Gained mutation: Your vision is a little blurry.
>2266 | D:2 | Gained mutation: Your system is resistant to poisons.
What is roguelike?
Every game on Steam tagged "rogue-like" is garbage.
You should give ADOM a whirl. I hadn't played it for a long-ass time either, but when it hit Steam I spent fifteen American dollars on it and gave it a go. Ended up liking it quite a bit, I would recommend looking up wiki spoilers as opposed to going in blind but it has a sense of place greater than just about any roguelike I've played. Even games like ToME that'll vomit lore all over you doesn't have the same feeling of ADOM, in large part because ToME has less feeling of interconnection. At least to me. Once ADOM starts to click you start planning out where you're going to head on the world map, and that may change based on what items you find or what happens. Fun stuff.
Either Binding of Isaac or Super Meat Boy, can't decide
Cataclysm DDA
I like Cataclysm: DDA, but it's a serious time sink. If I were still a NEET, that would be awesome, but it's rough being able to play for three hours and not have any real progress
Man I haven't played CoQ since before they went for a steam release.
I'd been playing RLs before but that game really piqued my interest. Such a cool setting.
That's because those games are (mostly) garbage, and aren't even roguelikes. The best, ture roguelikes are all free.
>Elona+
I must have put a total of 300 hours into that game and barely made through the second continent on any of my characters. Though I spent far too much time designing my house and grinding for platinums than actually progressing through the game.
Elona+ is easily my favorite. I spent hundreds of hours in it, and even managed to use Astral Light Pen on Jure to have my own personal pet goddess. I've been looking for a game that captures its feel, but there's just nothing quite like it, you know?
All this great taste, E+ is amazing. here's my character
>Yacatect of Wealth
mahnigga.jpg
Probably the only sane goddess in the game.
I started with her for the free platinum, I stayed for the pet duck and the throwing coin.
I like going Opatos at the start just to get Golden Knight. Easy to build favor with him too, so it doesn't take long. Then I either take Jure or Yacatect
>tfw started as the class with no skills, tourist I think
>become badass wizard with a machine gun and large posse
E+ is pretty fun stuff.
>tfw beat DCSS, all runes, on first try
with heavy coaching
IVAN
>tfw you don't have autism
Feels bad man.
Is ADOM worth the time? The graphics are a bit off-putting, but is it at least a good game?
you can enjoy these types of games without autism. Dedication to something != autism.
CDDA
Call me a nintenbaby, but I really enjoyed these games and wish they made more.
The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games shit all over the mainline titles too.
I still don't get how no one has made a visually appealing (eg good graphics) rougelike outside of dungeons of dredmor.
URR
eventually
Because graphics don't matter when the gameplay needs to be fresh. Developers can focus on adding more interesting stuff in, instead of coding fancy pants onto the PCs.
I am too conditioned from modern gaming. I get really far than die because I start spamming actions instead of slowing down and reading everything.
any rouge likes on xbax or pisstation that are any good?
Is ADOM boring? I can't seem to will myself to learn this game with all the talents, skills, races, side quests, bla bla bla.
no. never ever, consolecucks. Go back to playing interactive cutscene simulator 4000
all memeing aside, there are no roguelikes on consoles
thats a lie i know of one but i cant remember its name nec somthing
no. If it's on consoles I would bet you my firstborn that it's not a roguelike. Their controllers don't have the number of buttons needed to play them.
necrodancer is roguelite
don't confuse the buzzwords
if you are thinking of Crypt of the Necrodancer thats not a RL.
ADOM, first one I played
desktop dungeons is the only rougelike I've actually felt compelled to spend a lot of time in, all the popular ones never really grabbed my attention totally.
Elona+, even if it's more on the "like" side of roguelike. I really enjoy the ability to settle down and become a farmer or a merchant with the ever present threat of death at all times.
Holy shit this looks amazing.
>mfw throwing panties at people and making them commit suicide.
There is no more entertaining feeling.
It's incredibly detailed and complex. There are a number of systems you can/should game to make the leveling easier. there's a thread over on /jp/ dedicated to the game and I highly recommend having your first character or 2 be a dummy character because you'll screw up and waste time on their progression. 10/10 roguelike though.
mah nigga
The only roguelike I ever played is Pixel Dungeon.
one life run a dungeon thats about it right??
DoomRL is fuckin' perfect, I didn't ever imagine you could make a roguelike actually feel like Doom
no
here's a chat log from someone having issues in the tutorial.
I have wasted entire month to play CDDA.
It's pretty fun to play, despite of high difficulty to get in with it
>this is harder than dark souls
kek'd
so he equiped the bow right?
I'll also add that it is the only mobile game I enjoyed.
I assume it's pretty entry level but it got me interested into the genre and I downloaded DCSS yesterday.
probably. those early levels when you're first playing are painfully hard though.
What do you guys think about casters in DCSS? I find them incredibly slow to play. Takes hours just to get past the early game. I always play melee characters because of this, even though I like casters more.
To the user who mentioned rogue survivor last thread, thanks, been playing it everyday
Any new news on e+? I know the dev dropped the chat/death message servers, working on a new game entirely and hinted he might try to bring e+ to steam
>this thread
Since when does Sup Forums have decent roguelike threads?
Also, is the new updated DF adventure mode any good?
this is why im glad I started as tourist class, once you get past the trollish tutorial you basically learn the system from unlocking new skills.
once you're past that, well I wouldn't say the game is easy from there on but you will know what to do, and have a companion or two, best way to start.
>get these slimes out lomias!
There's still a good bit of work they could do to it but it's currently really solid. My favorite aspects are how fast your character's power ramps up, and how much emphasis is on your equipment as opposed to level. It's hard to define but CoQ's just got an excellent flow to it and is a bit looser in terms of enemy and item level than a fair number other roguelikes. Getting a carbide weapon early on is a pretty huge gamechanger and isn't entirely outside the realm of possibility. Same with finding an early shotgun. Or running into templars while you're a mutant. I also really like the skill system.
What's the best entry level roguelike? Never played one in my life.
DCSS for class/race customization, brogue for a very rogue influenced roguelike
Dcss is as entry level as it gets
Or doomrl
pixel dungeon will let you get the gist without asking the question "what the fuck do these symbols mean?"
else pick a game, read a tutorial if you're lost, get loot, win
Shit there was one Roguelike I forgot about and I want to play it again I think it had caves in the title but it wasn't caves of qud, had some dnd classes in it and tons of interactions
>talk to orc instead of killing it like everything else
>wants to join you instead
If anybody still doesn't know roguebasin. Com is basically Roguelike wiki, tons of Roguelikes of all types
Protip: Roll a Juere Claymore or Warrior and just smash things with melee weapons. It's the simplest playstyle for beginners. AND IF YOU EVER GET A WISH BY DRINKING FROM A FOUNTAIN, ASK FOR "seven league boots"
Oh, and pick a Little Girl as your starting pet when you get to town. Stronger than the Bear since she can equip more kinds of items.
Castle of the Winds. Never could figure out how to change your damn icon though.
Some guys are still updating Elona+ Custom with more content translations and stuff, but yeah, original creator doesn't seem to be working on it anymore. I'd say it's a pretty complete game right now though
>Oh, and pick a Little Girl as your starting pet
What did I just read?
I liked DCSS best a few years ago. But so much has changed since then i have no idea if I'd still like it as much
Yep. You can also gene engineer Little Girls (and other creatures) to create a super OP version. Or a horribly deformed mutant with three + arms.
And there's a slave merchant in Derphy where you can buy other humanoid pets.
Pictured: Shotgun toting Younger Sister
i've only played nethack DCSS and TOME
do i fail Sup Forums?
Tales of maj'eyal
Shiren the Wanderer is about as close as you can get on console
Incursion?
Surely you mean DRL
if you fail your ziggurat in DCSS now, is there no way to ever get another one? wiki says they no longer randomly spawn in pandemonium (which is completely retarded change)
I like Tales because of the Sigils. A very nice mechanic that opens up more combat options.
The fact that I picked up a two handed hammer that automatically shoots lightning bolts is nice too.
you can play -as- a snail aswell.
FTL. I still struggle with beating everything on hard so it has got a lot of replay value for me.
A snail pianist. Or hell, a golem pianist.
I should really run a pure performer from Level 1, instead of just picking it up once my character is stronger. Would be interesting to grind.
not a roguelike
I actually googled before posting. It's a roguelike.
DCSS is about the only one to hold my interest.
Pic related, my best run.
It's nothing Like Rogue. Googling doesn't mean anything because people slap the term onto anything with some procedural generation and/or permadeath. It's not even a damn roguelite.
Those are not roguelikes.
FTL is almost a roguelike. While it has permadeath, procedural generation, and grid based gameplay, FTL doesn't have turn based action, although to be fair you can pause the game anytime you want. It's the closest roguelite I've ever seen that's still not a roguelike.
>It's not even a damn roguelite.
Why not? It's closer to a roguelike/roguelite than Isaac.
And according to google and steam, so is Binding of Isaac, Darkest Dungeon, and Rogue Legacy.
Point being that google gets it's information from users, and the majority of people use it as an adjective to describe anything with permadeath or procedural generation.
Dwarf fortress adventure mode
Fuck that's it I'm a retard thanks man
Where do you find those images? I think you all convinced me to play the game.
