"Video games will never be a legitimate form of art" - John Wetton

>Having once made the statement above, I have declined all opportunities to enlarge upon it or defend it. That seemed to be a fool's errand, especially given the volume of messages I receive urging me to play this game or that and recant the error of my ways. Nevertheless, I remain convinced that in principle, video games cannot be art. Perhaps it is foolish of me to say "never," because never, as Greg Lake informs us, is a long, long time. Let me just say that no video gamer now living will survive long enough to experience the medium as an art form.

Thoughts?

>Squire, Emerson, Lake and Wetton all died within 18 months of each other

Fuck. How long does Fripp have left?

what makes a game art and what doesn't make a game art

it literally doesn't matter, bickering about "is it art? is it art? is it art?" is bottom of the barrel critique

its annoying because the logic behind this just feels like "it just isn't, okay"

Who is he to say what is and isn't art? That's the true fool's errand because art is incredibly subjective. Art can be anything anyone finds artistic value in.

He also doesn't explain the "principle" he mentions. What is preventing video games from being art? He claims they can't but doesn't actually say why.

This just sounds like a fancy way of saying "I don't like thing".

good
"artists" need to stay the fuck out of my hobby

Not something that keeps me awake at nigh. Video games don't have to be art, all they have to be is entertaining.

Video games aren't art, they're sports.

Lake is dead too? Fuck.

His weight must've finally gotten to him. Meanwhile Palmer is as healthy as ever.

If anything I'd say video games are a higher form of art than most because everyone experiences them in a slightly unique way. The timing and order of inputs will virtually NEVER be the same between two people. Your experience is yours and no one else can basically ever mimic it unless they try to on purpose. You interpret a painting or movie, you yourself take part in the completion of a video game.

Yep, a couple of weeks before Christmas. Within 2 months of Wetton, it was terrible!

Lung cancer, which isn't super surprising since he was a chain smoker since he was a teenager.

Though him being a great big fat bastard undoubtedly didn't help things.

Games are composed of artistically created interactive environments, and most games count with artistically created sounds and music to create atmospheres for them
Even text based games may contain stories artistically created by the developers

Games are objectively art, how snobbish people want to react about this fact is just a pointless tantrum for personal attention

Art has to have no point except to exist for itself. Games have to make money and entertain.

>Never
Nah, that's ignorant.
The real main problem with video games not being considered a legitimate artform, aside from it being viewed as childish, is the fact that the quality is everywhere, but really, what's the difference between it and movies at that point?

The main thing stopping video games from being art are the people that force video games to be art, instead of letting it all come together.

He's right. Whether its under the guise of "Art" or "SPORTS" you people are so hilarious to watch, trying to gain real world credibility for your little hobby.

>your little hobby.

Why are you even here?

Video games are about much of an art as pornography.

Why are you responding to obvious bait?

I enjoy this little hobby. But you people are hilarious to watch.

A lot of porn is considered art

A reminder that anything can be art and being art doesn't signify quality by itself.

>blacked.com

Blacked has some of the best camera work and lighting in pornography.
Jews responsible for running it have hired some real talent.

That's my fetish.

>mfw I unironically enjoy these threads

they get people every time

some people legit have their head that far up their asses
"this hobby is considered mature and cultured. l engage in this hobby, therefore l am matured and cultured" aka the poseur and dilettante approach to art

If he's not going to expand on or defend his view, why argue with him? Whether I agree with him or not, his mind's made up. I'll keep to what I like regardless.

Why the fuck do you keep making these and changing the person every time? Why does nobody catch on other than

>Video games will never be a legitimate form of art
>video games cannot be art

There's a difference between being an artform in themselves, and not being art at all.

I'd tend to agree that there is indeed not much special about video games to put them in an entirely different category, but they're still art. Or at least we'd need to start by coming up with different names for these, because Candy Crush and Angry Birds definitely have very little in common with Deus Ex or MGS3, yet they're all called "video games", and only half of those can be considered "art".

What about commissioned art? It has to make money and entertain somebody, or else it's purpose is failed.

too late buddy, the videogame industry is now full of "artist" jobsworth spewing out shit for their salary, it's no different to the art world

>wanting videogames to be considered art
Do you also want more walking simulators and pretentious hipster garbage like undertale?

Art is subjective, and video games aren't.

THERE I SAID IT.

He's right, Journey and Team Ico games are beautiful though but it's not even close to the level of films and literature.

Why is this ebert quote being attributed to John Wetton

leave him alone REEEEEEEEE

Yeah, shadow of the colossus will never stand up to masterpieces such as paul blart mall cop or 500 darker shades of gray
