Hyper Drift Lighter

...

That madoka fan game.

Fanmade Wario

Daily reminder the left picture isn't a game.

left: still image right: actual game

Holy shit do the new Mario and Luigi still use sprites?

Just going to post this, currently playing through it for the 1st time.

BoF series has some great sprite work

Pro tip: don't play paper jam, it's a hot mess. I've played through every game in the series at least once, and paper jam is by far the worst, and doesn't come close to any of the other games in the series. bowser's inside story is my favorite.

Yeah I actually have Bowser's Inside Story too, so I'll play that eventually. Why do a lot of people hate Partners in Time?

The left isn't even a real game

On the left
A still image made by an artist who didn't need to concern himself with the technical side of video game development. He doesn't need to care about creating a reusable tile set to speed up the development process. He also doesn't need to worry about animating any of the characters, animating the lighting effects, or scrolling layers. He's been doing pixel art for years and probably has worked on games before, but he sure as fuck didn't make the image with the intention of developing a game.

On the Right
A shitty game made by amateurs with no artistic talent, but at least they made a fucking game.

This is the part where we all tell OP to kill himself.

>made the original thread as a joke in 2015
>this screencap still does the rounds as a bait thread
>this is the closest I'll ever come to """fame"""
Feels bittersweet to be honest lads.

>comparing a game that was fanmade for modern systems to a game that was meant to look like something that could run on a Commodore 64

Here's your (You). Remember to sage, boys!

>Good pixel art must be hyper plastic and full of filters so it looks almost 2.5 D.
There is nothing with true pixel art.

*wrong

>Filters
What are you talking about? There are no filters on pic related. It's all done by hand, pixel by pixel, with no special effects. By definition, it is most certainly "true pixel art".

Not him but that's my favorite. Mostly because I love the bad guy's designs

Otherwise it's extremly linear compared to the semi-open world of the first.

I'm always a fan of how the GBA Fire Emblem games animate.

PW and TWEWY

>Square will never make anything that isn't Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, or Kingdom Hearts again

Still one of the best games Square ever made.

The sprite work in Suikoden 2 is some of the best of any JRPG.

Some of the foregrounds clash, but most of them look great.

Was I the only one who loved Partners in Time the most?

...

Brigador.

I like the normal attacks and the crits.
But the pacing is awful, and rounds takes forever.

man I loved that game, even if I sucked at it

Legend of Mana was a miracle, and is proof that the 90s is the only era it could have been made in.

Did somebody say sprites?

Is that an Ultraman horse?

I really like the artstyle of the 3DS Mario & Luigi games.

It's a downgrade from the SNES. They weren't as flashy or pretty, for sure, but the battles flowed much better.

Misleading cherrypicked as fuck image you got there, you baiting faggot.
Undertale's overworld sprites are weak, granted, but the left image is a still frame not representative of actual gameplay. The two are not comparable.

No game will ever look like pixel art on the left, the artist spent dozens of hours on that as a static image. "Game mock-ups" are notorious in pixel art circles for not looking like actual games. They're hard edge, (fairly) limited palette digital art that ignore strict palette limitations, resolutions, and context in a whole animation that give game sprites that "video game" look. Any time an artist like makes an animation with that style and level of detail, the cracks in the methodology start to show; how the illusion of light is hitting something in the illusion of movement, maintaining the illusion of a consistent 3D structure between movement. It's several times as much worked to make a whole walk cycle of that, then several times more work on top of that to keep it from going full squigglevision. No sane game artist will go through that process, treating every frame like a painting is not what games do. There's a reason SF3's sprites went from sketches of complete animations, to 1px line art, to flat shaded, and beyond. They started at the bottom so they never had to redo it to accommodate the top, and the refinement shows; every sprite is clean, consistent, and smooth because it was shaped by the frames before and after it. I'd equate OP image to sculpting a model in a baked pose and trying to pass it off as a game mock-up, or just plain making a piece of plain old art and trying to pass it off as a cartoon mock-up. Games don't do that, cartoons don't do that. Don't get me wrong, great artist, great piece of art, but it's a very poor representation of game sprites.

True, the OP should have used a still from Owlboy. That game is gorgeous, and new. I think it's by the same guy who did the mockup too.

palette swapping and cycling is a lost art

Never realized how lazy his air frames are in that throw.

>True, the OP should have used a still from Owlboy
Except the entire point of the original post back was to bait autists into ranting about why the two images aren't comparable

That image is retarded.
>Left a single still image
>Right an entire game made by one person

gee wizz wonder why there's a quality difference

We really need Fire emblem GBA quality sprite animation back.

sf3

How are they lazy?

The movement in-game is alone is enough to complete the illusion.

Yeah, maybe 2 or 3 frames of the hair and straps wiggling would have improved it, but you sure as fuck didn't notice that until now.

Anyone got any Metal Slug?

>Pyroat seems to want to play with Simon

of course it had to lead to furry shit

I don''t think you actually know how games are made. We've got no limitations nowadays with color palettes.

If I wanted, and had a bunch more of wario frames, I could make a small demo of the picture on the left.

There's no reason why sprites can't be over the top. It's just more work for the artist, not the programmer.

Heritage for The Future

why does it look like the protag is wearing a diaper

He's not

I was baiting, game looks pretty dope

is it like Pokemon Uranium?

...

>is it like Pokemon Uranium?

Yeah, pretty much, though I think this has way better Pokemon designs then uranium does

capx.wikia.com/wiki/CAPX_Wiki

>pic was made to inspire actual interesting conversation
huh

Left one isn't even a video game.

...

More work, more money. Something most indie devs either aren't willing to pay or put time into. Especially when you consider the fact that you have to maintain that level of quality for multiple characters and enemies across a big game.

Not even your AAA devs bother with traditional animation, on a pixel level or not. The only ones that do are enthusiast with a love of the aesthetics and are willing to eat the cost.

there's plenty of games that actually do look that good

...

>Doppole is in

Hell yeah

...

Lol
No
Not at all

>Starting Pokémon is also the obligatory bird Pokémon
Is there a way to play this on mobile?

DFO has amazing sprites

EINS

ZWEI

I like the sprites for the side scrolling hentai games

...

this is a bunch of shifting and tweening. Something you guys bitch about all the time.

I wish I could draw like this.

What would you choose Sup Forums?
>Great art with okay animations and a bunch of tweening and shifting
>Okay art with great animations

>comparing those two
>at all

How can a human be that moronic.

Came on just to see if someone mentioned FE7/SS.

Sword master animations are the best, closely followed by generals.

There are RPGMakerXP emulators on android but it's not being designed with them in mind so if it will run or not is up to chance.

I think the programmers have said if somebody finds an RPGXP emulator that can run it though they'll try to optimize it, so if you do you should make a post on the reddit

Good gameplay.

That's not a choice that was given
plus we're not even talking about gameplay

Pokemon gen 5

Good Gameplay.

Either is fine if you can forget you're looking at sprites. If it animates well you're more likely to be immersed enough to suspend your disbelief but the same can be said for if the sprites themselves look really good.

I'd say a middle ground is preferable though.

No one on here knows what they want. You have people posting animations done with tweens, shifts and rotations and calling it good and in the same breath call the methods lazy garbage.

u cheeky cunt

These are great. I dare say better than the games

...

JLM good gameplay.

Good looking gameplay.

Good Gameplay

legend of mana for the win. Wish they would make a sequel to that one.

All they did was make a PS2 and DS mana games that were so fucking subpar

I made Revolver Ocelot (Revolver Ocelot) years ago.

You don't know the feeling of a meme eclipsing you.

While not amazing in the way something like Metal Slug is, I think HLD makes very effective use of a more minimalist spriting style.

What's the best Metal Slug game?

Revolver Ocelot is one of my favorite vidya characters of all time and I appreciate your help in making him a little bit more popular.
