Haseo. Had several good reasons to be edgy from the history of the series, still managed to carry himself like an actual character, developed in a natural way to lose his edge throughout the series and become more of a calm and rational individual.

Well, the actual Dante had much better dialogue, for starters. There is also the tone of said dialogue compounded to this problem, as others have mentioned. Dante felt much more self-aware in terms of the fact that he comparatively did not come off as aggressive and serious when he was dicking around.

But yeah, like I said, I think the series this character comes from has a pretty good comparison for what to do if you would define both as edgy.

Trash boy band doush nozzels exist, people just find them annoying. You can write them, but writers who often create these characters give very little depth to them because "that's what's cool". Go watch Green Room. It's about the closest I can think of to 'edgy' characters, the characters in this movie aren't exactly try hards though. Theres also Punpun, and Aku No Hana, which do really good jobs of crafting try hard teenagers, but not to a grungy I'm-gonna-fuck-my-fist attitude. I think the biggest trip up for writing these characters is the setting, cause often times, like with Dante, they hitt the nail on the head with that faggot, but the world they put them in goes along with 'aw fuck Denty, u so kawi cool fug.' I dunno, edgy is edgy. and there's a lot of ways you can tackle it.For a less realistic sense , you could always have all the characters come off as a cheesy one liner bullshit band wagon. Or maybe set him in a world were people actually react and get shocked by him being so fliping edgy, that could be funny. I dunno, that's a few ways I would do it.

DMC1 Dante is the typical 80s anime protag like Trigun and Cobra
DMC3 Dante is edgy and suicidal like Donte, but his development was built up well and supported by other character (Vergil and Lady), unlike Donte in which he's just edgy and childish from the start to the end

Guts works because he is shown to be a living, breathing, thinking caring human being, his friendships with members of the band oh the hawk felt real. His tragic past wouldn´t justify his edge at all if we didnt get a chance to see what exactly he lost. The eclipse would hurt just as much if the ones doing the killing were regular humans, it was disguisting because it was brought upon them by someone close, not because it involved demons

The best way to make an edgy character is to have him constantly be the butt of the joke due to his edginess and being forced to do ridiculous shit

DMC4 Dante was actually my favorite despite being a little more one-dimensional than the others. It's like he only exists to bring that casual nonchalance while saving the world that Nero lacks, but his delivery is so on-point that I can't gripe about it. I don't know whether it's just the animation quality or how he's written or what, but it's like he goes from "silly pizza man with bad one-liners" to "yes I AM fucking rad, thank you for noticing".

Early post-golden age Guts works pretty well since you're shown pretty early that he's a broken human being pretending to be ruthless and using his apparent disregard for others as a defense mechanism, trying desperately to be strong enough so that all the tragedy that surrounds him and his cruel fate on't make him fall into despair. The story also takes the time to show in detail how he was molded into who he is now instead of just saying "lol rape and everybody died" and skipping all the human moments.
