You don't HAVE to do ANYTHING.

Not really, but it has a kick ass soundtrack.

Yes, it's the better game.

No.

no you dont but it's worth playing as long as you have the mouse look mod installed/ the version that has mouse look

I like this. It's too early in the morning to go into the depth of the situation, but 99% of the time, you're right, you have a choice. It's just that people seem to think choices with consequences or risks are somehow forcing their hand.

The original game, you mean. The Enhanced version or whatever ruined the electric vibes the classic OST has going for it.

Yes

They're both on sale on GOG right now, SS2 goes up for free occasionally as well.

For the most part, they're fairly disconnected from each other, but yes. You SHOULD play SS1 before SS2. They're both great fucking games.
Also, if you play with mouselook you're a plebian who should be gunned down in the streets.

the PC version had lower quality everything including the game's music in comparison to the mac version

check out youtube videos for comparisons (music)

if they could somehow shoehorn in the Mac version's assets and audio or even just port the mac version with mouse look to PC it'd be perfect

it's a better game, so yes

But even the devs said play with mouselook

Wait, really? Source? This is the first time I'm hearing about this.
Either way, I still think mouselook in SS1 is wrong. It makes the game way too fucking easy, but that's just me I guess.

>game is only """""hard""""" because of shitty controls

Literally artificial difficulty.

Sorry, busy at the moment and it's part of the stream they did while playing it. It's pretty long and but entertaining to watch anyways. Just look up devs play ss1.

Huh, interesting. I'll check it out sometime. Thanks, user.

No, but it's not as hard to play and outdated as it may seem. Just play with mouselook and get used to a few quirks of being an old game and it's great, and I say this as someone who first played it last year. System shock 2 is simpler, but better in my opinion and you can definitely play it without the first, which I did.

No but it's the better game and you will be missing out if you skip it for whatever reason
the enhanced edition doesn't change the music at all it's still the original midi files and you can use whatever soundfont you want with either version
no they don't it's just a quality of life feature for the retarded modern "gamers"

No, but it is the superior game :^)

no but its very good

system shock 1 has one of the busiest most incomprehensible HUDs and interface in general that i've ever seen

That's not really what I'm saying, though. Because honestly, neither SS1 or SS2 is really that hard at all. I'm just saying that with mouselook, SS1 becomes too easy. It's not that beforehand it's the hardest game ever made, it's still fairly easily. But to me at least, the game just became a bit too easy with Mouselook enabled.

The two games are really different in terms of tone. The first game is action/adventure and while it's tense at the beginning, once you get some upgrades you basically become the Terminator. SS2 is more horror and RPG.

It's really not that bad once you get used to it. If anything, I kinda like it.

SS1's HUD is huge but it's very readable, and unlike SS2, it allows you to manipulate the viewport/camera and fire your weapon while having your inventory or a log entry open.

The "Mac" music on youtube isn't actually from the Mac version, it was some band that remade the music

the hud like everything else in the game is about maximum player/environment interaction and immersion, Something mouselook fags miss out on

No, in fact I believe SS2 only became a sequel to System Shock fairly late in development.

They are rather different games.

My mistake, just one said it was awesome
Here's a guide I made real quick to help try to counter this arguement

Wow I made it seem as complicated as the intro to the ui

You don't miss anything with mouselook

Get the enhanced edition on steam and use mouselook
And read the manual

Keep in mind it's more of a dungeon crawler than a shooter. the shooting aspects haven't very well IMO, but it's still fun running around the station looking for clues and shit

most people hated them but I liked the cyberspace levels. I was disappointed that they took them out of SS2. I hope they come back for SS3

Is it even necessary? The game itself explains the HUD to you right at the start of the game. Unless they took this out of the enhanced edition.

The games explanation just says what they all are. What I was trying to say with mine was to just ignore most of it and keep it on those 3 panels since most people complain about how complicated it is.

The only excuse for having trouble with SS1 is if you have an actual learning disorder. Besides, your guide tells people to ignore the general inventory tab, which is needed for many parts of the game.

Really? All I can think of is the retinal scanner and the bombs. The batteries and first aids I almost never used.

How did System Shock 1 control without mouselook?

I'm playing it right now, I just don't like how you gotta stop, go into the "interact mode" just to pick something up. Other games like Deus Ex have just spoiled me with straight to the point controls.

it's essentially playing the whole game in "interact mode" keys are slightly different to make more sense, thief and ss2 also used this layout by default and people still whinge about it to this day.
protip you can play the whole game and perform every action with just a 2 button mouse.

best midi version?

Roland SC-55

I heard this 2 button mouse story all the time, but it doesn't matter, because it feels a bit clunky to play SS enhanced edition. The dragging items to UI doesn't feel like a good idea, it's like they didn't have a good concept for interaction with the environment yet, but in Deus Ex they did.

No, but you should play it regardless.

It's because you're constantly switching between the schemes. The original game is pretty natural to play once you get over the initial learning curve.

>it's like they didn't have a good concept for interaction with the environment yet, but in Deus Ex they did.
there may be more stuff you can interact with in deus ex in the the actual environment but the way you interact with it is much less meaning full than system shock or ultima underworld
think of the mouse cursor as your hand, how you would physically have to pick things up, place them, press switches etc.

>not using a soundfont

Wow that sounds like garbage.
