Does Sup Forums have any tips on a new FTL player?

Pls Sup Forums, I don't know how to unlock the other layouts and ships.

Do like 3 failed attempts then start googling how to git gud. Also
>don't fucking help with spiders
>blue text means good things (usually)
>teleporters/cloning bays op
>upgrade shields, teleporter, and ship energy for maximum early game rape

Get to 2 shield bubbles asap.
If you don't have access to blue option, just say no.
Don't go into rock sectors without 5 engine or clone bay.

What about weapons upgrades?
Speaking of which, is it better to go inside an uncharted nebula instead of a enemy sector?

>FTL thread on Sup Forums

There's been some update, or something? I thought FTL was dead.

There was a sale recently
And I'm new to this game

Just to start you off, have your first three members at the helm, weapons and shield rooms. Your weapon cooldowns shorten and your evasion goes up.

Also, oxygen can be ignored if you have no breaches. If it's already at 100%, you can take the energy from there and put it somewhere more useful. Again, like your engines or shields for more evasion.

Keep your doors locked for the most part. It's a bad neighbourhood.

Your mentality bothers me. Kill yourself

Stealth and hacking modules work wonders, get them whenever you can.

Nebula sectors are filled with whole lot of nothing, I wouldn't go there without long-range scanners.
Also related, if there's a bunch of nebula beacons on normal sectors, I'd suggest upgrading piloting to 2 so you unlock blue option for some loot in rather common event.

don't get mad when you lose to the final boss due to rng

That is if I even get there to begin with.

Everyone is giving you fake advice btw

>Giant spiders are no joke, so do not fuck around with them
>If you see a signal from a planet, and find alien life, do not bring them to the ship. Just pet them, they might lead you to a crew member
>Blue means good stuff
>If you get the ''Weapons ready when travel to another sector'', gg, you win
>FIRE EVERYTHING AT THE SAME TIME
>Get level 2 shields
>Do not listen to

There, now git gud

...

Should I accept the pirate's surrenders or just straight up kill them?

What kind of retarded ape even asks for help in a rougelite anyway?

>hey guys i want to play this game
>but i don't actually want to learn how to play or get better on my own through trial and error which the game was designed specifically for!
>please hold my hand and tell me every little secret!

It's not like the game is even complicated, just play the damn thing.
>but i don't understand! I keep doing the wrong thing over and over and keep losing wipe my ass for me!

pathetic.

>FIRE EVERYTHING AT THE SAME TIME
>not using lasers to punch through their shields before making a pass with beam weapons

wew

You go look up Matthew McKnight (LethalFrag) on either YouTube or Twitch. Preferably both. You watch him play, and he teaches you how to git gud. You then play the game like a boss.

It's that easy.

>FIRE EVERYTHING AT THE SAME TIME
>not shooting a rocket to lower enemy shields and then punching a new asshole through their ship with beams

He's got like 1k videos on FTL, do I just go from the start?

no, you just play the game yourself. Knave.

Just watch the no-pause stealth ones.

Play it yourself like any normal human being should.

Savescum

Slaver surrenders end up with you getting free crew. Don't accept any surrenders unless you get a weapon or augment out of it.

>It's not like the game is even complicated
No, the game is quite easy. The problem is, THE GAME ITSELF IS A CUNT

>YOU HAD THIS GOOD RUN?!
>HERE, HAVE A HOSTILE SHIP THAT COMPLETELY COUNTERS YOURS!

you are aware you can always run away right?

don't act like the game can't just fuck you over sometimes. I mean I've beaten it myself in a lot of ways but sometimes you just run into that rape monster ship that first barrage knocks out your engine and lights everything on fire while it proceeds to fuck you. the best option there is to run away of course but sometimes it just happens.

>Does Sup Forums have any tips on a new FTL player?
git gud

But seriously. FTL is a game all about maximizing your chances at good rng. For starters try to go to as many stops as possible before the next sector. Learn what the good weapons are and when to have certain things leveled. For instance you definitely want shields level 3 before hitting sector 5. I haven't played in like a year, but I was very good at ftl. I got a lot better by watching this one streamer who had a 39 ship win record in a row on hard. People who compain about the range in this game just don't know how to mitigate it.

Devilish

true enough but often when people complain they got raped by a "counter ship" they then show you a screenshot of a 1 shield ship in sector 4

you can minimize a lot of counters by properly investing in defenses

well that's fair considering how many people on Sup Forums are bad at video games.

If you disagree with this list then you are free to provide proper reasoning

You don't have to go from the start. Just ignore the idiotic replies you're getting. Meme kiddos gonna meme. Maybe pick a ship you're interested in and start watching his runs on that ship?

why is flak 1 so good?

i'm shit at this game but 85 % of my wins have been because i had flak 2 and a nice old beam

>swarm missiles

FYI the higher the engine power the smaller amount of evasion is gained, it's not worth the budget

Fast charge speed and shit tons of chances to hit. Even if you don't actually smack hull, you're lowering shields. If you DO smack hull, best believe whatever system is in there is gonna get bopped.

Flak 1 is 3 shield damage for 2 power at a short cooldown
this makes it a perfect complementary weapon to clear the way for your primary source of damage
and in addition to this, the fact defense drones shoot it down is actually an advantage as it allows you to "cloak" your missiles and hacking drones

swarm missiles use 1 missile even if it shoots 3 times

for missiles low speed tends to be okay as it uses up less missiles overall

3 missiles allows it to, by itself, bypass defense drones and makes it vastly more efficient against super shields

and lastly due to it having 3 separate strikes each with an individual chance for breach and fire, it has a very good chance of causing either

as long as you don't make the mistake of setting it to fire at 1 charge its a good weapon

>from oh no! to pro

Learn that your chances of success are not based on luck but on your decision making ability.

Not feeling it, Rock C can go fuck itself.
Also twenty fucking one seconds for that full load.

im this fagI'd make some changes. Move dual lasers up 1, move burst laser mark I up 1. Move mini beam up 2. Move heavy laser mark I to top tier.

Move Flak Gun II down 2. Move glaive beam down 1. Move Swarm missles down 1. Move pegasus Missile down 2.

Might be more changes, but these are off the top of my head... ask for reasoning for whatever if you'd like I guess.

Nebulas are only worth it if you have long range scanners and fuel to burn. Otherwise you're going to waste a ton of time and not get much from it.

ah you guys are smart. didn't think of the cloak idea. i should really get back to FTL to actually figure out how to get consistently good at it.

What's the difference between advanced and the normal one?

Yeah, here's a tip

Give up

Advanced is the expansion pack that you should be using all the time.

I'll try to argue my point

dual lasers is lower that you'd expect due to the fact it cannot be bought or found, this generally lowers the rating of a weapon (technically it should also lower the rating of the unique advanced flak for the same reason, but because that weapon is so ridiculously good it got lowered from its own unique tier to top tier)

burst laser I is as high as its going to get, I'm not going to place it in the same tier as weapons which shoot 2 for 1. I'd first drop the laser charger (L) before boosting it up

mini beam: see dual lasers

heavy laser mark I: I will absolutely not put it in top tier, its a 1 for 1 weapon, it belongs nowhere near weapons like the BLIII

Flak gun 2 similarly is not going to be placed in the same tier as the hull smasher line, its way to efficient for that

glaive beam: I understand why, and this might be personal bias but I'd say the the potential for what may be the best combo in the game (glaive + pre-igniter) boosts it to its current tier

Swarm missile: already explained why I think its good

Pegasus missile: I'm gonna need you to explain this one because in terms of cost, missile usage and general utility its the best missile system in the game

What do?

hacking drone to weapon systems
alpha strike the weapon system
hope your alpha strike knocks out at least 2 weapon systems on his end

if you have cloaking, hacking goes to cockpit or shields instead and cloaking does the delay

>Killing the crew of the flagship buffs it

I never fucking understood this. If they just made the autorepair thing default and you had to kill the crew to stop them from repairing alongside it then it would be fine.

But killing the crew grants it a buff instead

I've only ever played on easy

Don't judge me.

not entirely
killing crew reduces its dodge rate, weapon recharge rate, shield recharge rate, prevents it from putting out fires and ensures it can't board you during phase 3

I've got this on my backlog for years and I always keep pushing it.

Yet I got the vibe that I would enjoy it.

It has the same fault as all the other AI only ships, can't repair a breach and as such you can cheese it.

Play on easy if you're just trying to win / unlock shit

You haven't truly lived then.

Give it a shot, its not a commitment type of game.

It's time to move up

Pray to the RNG gods

okay, here's my rebuttal.

just because you can't buy or find the weapon shouldn't lower it in my opinion.

burst laser 1 is better burst laser mark III for sure. Mark 3 should never ever be bought or used. It has too slow of a charge time and will lead to death. It is also better than the chain vulcan which is also not a very good weapon.

As for the heavy laser mark I. It is literally one of the best weapons in the game. In fact, it is the favorite weapon of the man with 39 ship wins in a row on hard who is heavily regarded as the best FTL player. Reasons for this are because it is the perfect weapon to round out a full 4 weapon laser build and offers a powerful and strong finishing shot to the salvo , with high hull pierce chance. Heaver laser mark I, is no contest on of the best weapons in the game. If any weapon on your list is completely and wrongly placed, it is this one. Like I cannot fathom how you have it that low.

Flak gun 2 isn't that good. 1 and adv flak vastly overshadow it. It takes too long to charge.

Glaive beam. This one I was actually most on the fence about. It can be very strong in some runs, but in others should absolutely be replaced because it is too slow.

Missiles in general are not good in ftl. Bombs are better and can't be shot down by drones, and lasers or lasers + beams in general are better. Missile weapons need ammo (which is better used for events) and missing with one is devastating in most missile builds. It's just not worth it to rely on missile weapons in general when the game is full of ships with defensive drones.

Are there any games like FTL but without the time constraint or that play more like Freelancer but with this artstyle?
The only thing that comes to mind is SPAZ

Captain's edition yes or no

You should download a mod called "Captain's Edition". It makes the game much easier to enjoy.

>The only thing that comes to mind is SPAZ
Have you tried Starsector

I've always wanted to try Starsector, but I don't like giving people online my credit info to buy their game, and I'm always wary of early access titles. Though I at least admire the dev for not shoving it onto steam if he felt it wasn't ready.

>SHIELDS CRITICAL!
>HULL CRITICAL!
>ENGINES CRITICAL!
>O2 ON FIRE

for the pegasus missiles the reason I placed them that high is because they ignore many of the issues you have with missiles due to the fact it shoots twice
drones can only shoot one of the 2 down and missing one is not nearly as devastating as it only halves the damage, not removing it

and the reason I have the BL3 and Flak 2 that high is because of their utility in 3 slot ships.

this poster is a spider

>not having 2 burst laser 2 and 2 scrap guns

There's Convoy but to me it just didn't have the same draw.
And the final boss even bigger shitfest than FTL one.

you can try Convoy, it's a huge FTL clone and doesn't really have a time limit

Preventing boarding in phase 3 is worth it.

Plus if you have the ability to kill the crew, just warp them in and destroy the weapons systems then keep some crew in there to chase out anyone who comes in to repair.

The easiest hard difficulty flagship fight I won was when I had 4 mantises I could warp over. Cloaked/shielded through a couple barrages and then all 3 phases were basically won.

>Space station invaded by giant spiders
>one of them is browsing Sup Forums

Makes perfect sense to me

he's posted that shit list 4 times now and has never budged on his shit opinions, just so you know

...

Haven't played it by Unending Galaxy seems pretty neat.

I think there was some Russian game called Space Ranger that was a bit fun as well.

Breaches are kind of pointless if there's no crew to suffocate though...

>3 missiles in a row missing

They still aren't worth it in my opinion. It's better to go with quicker weapons and using hacking to take down evasion/shields. For instance, it's really not hard to beat the game on hard with dual lasers, mini beam, and a burst laser 1 on the stealth ship with adequate hacking and mind-control techniques. In fact I'm pretty sure that's what I did on one of my high scores.

>Burst Laser Mark II
>About to fire
>WARNING! WEAPONS CRITICAL!
>Fire Artemis Misile
>MISS

actually its been adapted many a time
also a perfect list doesn't invite discussion, keeps the thread alive longer

You see those broken rooms?
It can't repair them.

is that a non-shit stealth c?

>bought FTL long time ago coz of Sup Forums
>played it without using pause, didn't know you could pause the game
>unlocked 50% of ships without using pause
>tfw I realised you could pause the game mid unlocks

It should be helm, weapons, and engines, which I think you meant.

>Ion Blast Mark II

you don't seem to acknowledge that pulling this strategy off requires the luck of landing multiple consecutive hits and at a high cost to energy. It's a solid thing to stumble upon for the first 1/3 of the game, but as soon as ships start getting a 2-3 shields and decent evasion it's a massive investment for something that relies on a string of RNG luck to be feasible.

I love the game but I hate the fact that if you don't get a clone bay, going for the final boss on normal or hard difficulty is a suicide 95% of the times.

Stealth C is top tier

What? The only time I ever used a clone bay on hard mode was with a boarding crew, and even then it wasn't always necessary if you micromanaged.

If I can't board I'd much rather have a med bay. Anytime someone boards route them to your medbay with a couple crew and problem solved.

What the fuck are you talking about, nigga. I never replace the stock medbay on Layout AB ships and have won on hard with every one of them.

aside from the combo its still a very fast shield remover

also ion blast II, with full upgrades actually needs to miss twice in a row for the emp to vanish

stealth C is "pray to rnjesus you don't run out of drone parts before getting shields"
you do the run is over

An easy task, indeed.

God damn, my brain farted and for some reason I wrote "clone bay".
I meant to write "crew teleporter". If you want to win a run a crew teleporter is almost always a must.

not on hard
do you notice the slight difference to the flagship?

>Rebel Scout
>Red Engine
>Burning pilot room
>They still jump lol
