Sakurai treated 3DS and Wii U as separate games in-house. It sounds stupid, I know, but to him its:

So even though they were developed simultaneously, Sakurai thought of them as separate entries.

That's my personal guess as to what Smash Switch is going to look like. Personally, I'd love Snake to come back plus maybe another Pikmin or Sonic character, but otherwise I'm cool with whatever they add. I just don't want shit removed.

FFVII Cloud was never on a Nintendo system, IIRC Sakurai said no to characters that have never been on a Nintendo system, look what happened.
Sakurai said no characters originating from anime/manga, Goku or some other anime character getting in is only a matter of time.
