Because it's got the most in depth factions, the most features of any civ game to date, arguably the most balanced, with an easy to use (if not a bit stagnant) modding scene, not the greatest AI but still somehow better than the AI in 5 and 6, and top of it's near perfect gameplay it managed to not only pull off a coherent story within a 4x game, but it pulled one of the best stories with some of the best writing in any videogame to date. In a fucking 4x game.
SMAC is as close to perfection as you can fucking get.

Miriam did nothing wrong

She did a lot of things wrong, like pretty much every faction. She's still my favorite just because of how well they handled her, the could have easily pulled a "religion is evil fuck that god dude go read a book my man" but they took the high road when writing here. She even has some of the best quotes in the game.

Which such negative implications on planet and science, its not too hard to figure out the developer bias. And a pity: Miriam was written well for a Fundamentalist.

She's definitely not the weakest though, that belongs to morgan honestly. You just need to know how to play her. Not top tier, and kinda made obsolete by one of the expansion factions, but her playstyle reflects her persona, ruthless warmongering and stealing of tech, and superior, zealous units ready to die for their cause.

Yeah she is not the weakest: I'm just saying that Miriam's depiction: as a "peace-loving" religious warmonger, isn't that different from, say, the depiction of Ghandi in Civilization or, more importantly, the picture painted of the religious right and Islamic extremists by atheists & skeptics.

The strength in Miriam's case is that she preaches a kind of sanity in a world thats lose moral questioning. The problem, is that the developers/writer are clearly transhumanists.

Saying Miriam is strong is like, I dunno, say M. Bison is strong. Of course he is. But is he sympathetic?

Morgan can be good if you play him right. You need to make heavy use of supply crawlers and get clean reactors asap.

I think making her a truly peace loving religious figure would kind of be missing the point. Chiron is a fucked up place with fucked up people. Looking on the upset end of the spectrum, deidre, the environmentalist ayylmao hippie who looks as innocent as Lal, is a fucking psychopath. Miriam can really only fight fire with fire, it's why like she is. I personally think it was an intentional writing decision than a jab at the religious. Every character has basically a dark stereotypical version of themselves that lurks in the shadows. The scientist who wants to benefit all of humanity is clearly doing shady shit and has no regards for human life as long as it means progress, morgan has said some nutty shit, santiago is just surivalism start to finish with an utter quest for dominance. The only two exceptions are Lal, which is like his whole concept, and even he has some shady stuff going on, and Yang. And that's because Yang has absolutely nothing to hide, as he truly doesn't give a fucking about anything.
I mean, that's what I do most runs anyways. Late game Morgan can be a capitalist jew-god if you played your cards right but his early game is just too fucking crippling for me imo.

Man, supply crawlers have got to be one of the most busted units in the entire 4x genre.

I think there is a mod somewhere that nerfs them. It was interesting to use for a while after getting used to spamming supply crawlers and TREE FAST and shitting out clean squads every turn right into yangs territory.

Recycling tanks are super early on and everyone does it out of pure efficiency.

Yang is fucked up in a ton of ways and he is also the best but the recycling tanks are literally nothing.

I mean, you would think that mass-producible harvesters would be a lot more expensive than they are.

Also speaking of broken shit, MMI has got to rank up there as far as techs go. It's on the level of CIV 4 bronze working.

copters are so fucking broken it's not even funny. Thankfully needlejets are still useful in providing a counter to them and ballistic missiles (i think) but jesus christ the AI can just not deal with chopper fleets. Plus with TREEFAST and supply crawlers I can shit clean shard copters every single turn at 7 seperate bases.
Owning recycling tanks doesn't necessarily mean you throw dead people in them. I think only the efficiency obsessed like Yang would do such a thing.

Gaians probably request to be processed into fertilizer to feed their favorite fruit tree, which is essentially the same thing anyway.

University would aggressively avoid fancy funeral rites in favour of a more practical solution as it gives them another opportunity to tip their fedoras.

Only peacekeepers and believers probably wouldn't recycle people.
And possibly not the spartans depending on the specific rhetoric they use as propaganda for their soldiers.
