It is explained that Noctis needs the power of the astrals, the crystal and the ring so he can stop the starscourge. You literally find Bahamut inside the Crystal, and at the very final cutscene the 6 Astrals are all sucked into the the ring, alongside the kings, and Noctis had also sucked all of the Crystals light into the ring which he needed to do so he could stop the starscourge which is coming from Ardyn, which Bahamut tells you.

based on what metric? I mean, if you're talking about just sales here, then yeah. Doesn't surprise me, though. It has all the elements of other popular games have at the moment. They're catering to a much wider demographic than before so I don't think anyone was surprised that is sold reasonably well. Just like MGS 5 being the most sold game in its series because they started implementing more modern and accepted gameplay tropes. As for the quality of the game itself, you can't deny it's incredibly divisive among the fan base and you'd have a hard time finding people who would unanimously call it the best when actually talking about the gameplay and other components.

DS and BB provide with vague hints and you can make out the whole picture using the in-game evidence.

At that point the Astrals are pure energy along with the crystal also being pure energy, and he manifests the 13 kings out from himself for the final blow while having his arm with the ring aimed at Ardyn the whole time.

They all tool turns stabbing Noctis as part of the ritual for him to die while at the same time they had energy of them put into the ring, when they stabbed Noctis parts of them went into him, which is why in the final scene the 13 weapons emerge from his body and he uses them aka KOTR while having the ring aimed at Ardyn to take down Ardyn.

The moveset are all useful in differnet situations and the point is to give you variety so you try things out on your own to your own liking.

Magic is more useful and impactful than other FFs, summons too and Armiger is great.

Boss battles like Aranea, Ifrit, Ravus etc are some of the best boss battles in the whole series.
