Does anyone else just kind of sit and wonder what the fuck genuinely happened with the WiiU? Yes, Nintendo's naming of the product, marketing of it, and reliance on gimmicks to sell weak hardware are contributing factors...but seriously. Never in my almost 30 years of playing their shit have I ever regretted a hardware purchase more than I do the WiiU.
They have so much money, so much time, and so many internal and 2nd party studios that they coulda had cranking out games for it but they did NOTHING. They fucking sat on their hands, shoved their thumbs up their ass, and did nothing but give excuses like "OH SHIT WE UNDERESTIMATED HD GAME DEVELOPMENT".
There was also nothing stopping them, AT ALL from hiring in new devs, and creating new studios or outsourcing more of their IP's like they've done with Smash, fire emblem, and others for years now.
New animal crossing? Nope. New Metroid, F-zero, or even an Advanced wars game? NOOOPE. Not even a god damn WiiU fire emblem and that series has tons of press now.
What do we get? A resurrected fucking Wii starfox game that was abandoned for being shit with gyros tacked onto it, and squid gyro lolis and other things that will be forgotten to the larger demographics of gaming. Nintendo's gigantic and frantic desperation to cling to gimmicks sickens me. They're so stuck on this mentality of being special snowflakes that they're losing sight that they're losing all foothold in the industry.
Christian Kelly
It's biggest fault was no 3rd party support, sadly the 3rd party support idiots were crying for were "Where is my rehashed yearly shit CoD and Sports games?" and not "Where are the unique games and new IPs?"
The biggest issue with the current genre is that it's over ran by casuals. The exclusives, generally good and unique games don't sell nearly 1/4th of what the yearly casual fodder does and developers of competing consoles and games only focus on that group, as where Nintendo keeps on focusing on their smaller, dedicated playerbase, but even then they kinda failed with the Wii U for reasons you mentioned, they didn't branch out their flagshit franchises enough.
They really should have focused on getting 3rd parties to make different games for it and tried to appeal to the market the DS had by making games similar to it, but better graphics, controls, etc on the Wii U.
John James
>Splatoon >Irrelevant.
Ryan Miller
>Does anyone else just kind of sit and wonder what the fuck genuinely happened with the WiiU? it was a shitty product that nobody wanted. The core Dual Screen element doesnt work if you cant see both at the same time like you can in the handhelds.
The core gimmick had no real function as a result, so it was just an underpowered system with no games.
Michael Roberts
>New Metroid, F-zero, or even an Advanced wars game? NOOOPE
I'll never get this retarded mentality
>If nintendo didn't want to fail, it should've invested in its historically least-successful franchises
Camden Morales
Yes, in the large scope of things Splatoon is irrelevant. Just because it was a good seller for WiiU doesn't make it relevant to the rest of the tens of millions of gamers who genuinely do not give a fuck and did not purchase a WiiU. The console failing catastrophically doesnt lie.
Everything the WiiU did is irrelevant, even if Nintendo is pushing the idea of it being important.
Jayden Harris
Yeah, yknow. Like Fire emblem was before they revamped it with Awakening, dumbass.
Blake Myers
It was a massive flop.
Grayson Miller
splatoon is fucking great though and for the scrubs who cant adapt to superior gyro controls the sequel will probably have dedicated stick options
David Brooks
I was mostly with you until you made this dumbass claim, outing yourself as a shitposter and nothing more. I mean really, what the fuck are you talking about? What's 'relevance' to you? As last I checked Splatoon was a huge hit, especially in Japan where it sparked all sorts of merchandising and boosted system sales.
Asher Cooper
I was with you until you called splatoon irrelevant. Splatoon and xenoblade were the only worthwhile wiiU games of 2015.
Hunter Perry
by making the series far more casual and relying on waifu-bait
Angel Jackson
every game on the wii u is a flop in the context of the gaming market in general because of how little people actually got a Wii U in the context of just the Wii U though it did fine. 4th most selling game, 4.62M units sold.
Ryder Morales
So should I get a Switch for the new Zelda or should I just get the Wii U version? I already fell for the Wii U meme and don't want to be fooled again. But at the same time I don't want to play a downgraded version of a new game.
Daniel Bennett
squid kids make me squirt
Ian Murphy
>Being this jaded about the games it had Yeah the Wii U was kind of a flop, yeah they should have and could have made more games. But if you're interested in you know, actual video games and not comparing sales, it had plenty to offer.
Kayden Johnson
I thought we might have a civil discussion about the Wii U for once, instead it's blatant "The Wii U, more like Pii U!" flare of every other thread.
>Splatoon is irrelevant In what world? If you're claiming sales is a factor, then fuck, mostly all games this generation not CoD, FIFA or GTA were irrelevant.
Josiah Myers
Ultimately the hardware wasn't that good, the marketing was muddled and even Nintendo lost faith in its main gimmick a few years after launch.
That said, there are still some really fucking good games on it even if Nintendo neglected Metroid, F-Zero etc in favour of their larger (and much more popular) franchises.
Tyler Johnson
Honestly Splatoon was Nintendo's most successful new IP since Animal Crossing. It will be interesting to see what Spla2n has to offer.
Jonathan Anderson
>pii u shitposting thread >xd no game >list games >all of those are rehashes or shit there I just summed up the entire direction this thread could go, lets move on now
Christopher Turner
I saw this game on the shelf once. My kid thought it looked shit, and chose Wind Waker instead.
Carson Reyes
they thought that producing the best exclusive line-up this generation would be enough
Michael Fisher
I don't regret it. had tons of fun with Smash, Mario Kart, Hyrule Warriors and Tokyo Mirrage Session.
Kayden Reyes
maybe they realized the wii u was a failure really early on and scrapped further projects.
although that won't explain why they aren't showing them now on the switch.
Juan Fisher
I wonder too. They cold release cheaper, better version of it. With better, long living, more comfy gamepad. Market it as a new console, while it was same old Wii U. But they did not. I think in after year or two they decided to slowly kill it, giving owners one or two game per year, so it would not look too bad for them. What for? For Switch?
Cooper Flores
I kinda regret it now, but I have to admit that I had some good times with it, specially being able to play while lying on my bed. A very comfy experience that no other home console could provide me, but still...
Can't wait for Switch.
Colton Gonzalez
The only Nintendo console that has a worse library than Wii U is the Virtual Boy.
Jayden Phillips
depending on what games you liked it only had a handful to offer
Liam Smith
The thing is, if you don't like 2 or 3 of the "core" Wii U games then there's only a few others that are good. Like I see everyone on here saying Hyrule Warriors is a great game but I thought it was just a shitty repetitive button masher with no depth. Don't see how anyone can play it for more than a couple of hours.
Blake Cooper
The unique (for a non-portable console) hardware wasn't enough to justify it's shortcomings tech wise and Nintendo were fucking stupid in randomly shoving it into games unnecessarily (SF:0 comes to mind). Nintendo did almost nothing with their large amount of Mascot IPs that weren't Mario or Zelda during its generation, which is a huge problem when that's a lot of the appeal of a Nintendo console. They fucked up their virtual console by being stingy and stupid as fuck with an atrocious available library. I'm still gobsmacked that they thought PM:CS, SF:0 and MP:FF were good ideas. Or more accurately, good ideas that they then fucked up the implementation of into oblivion.
>Hey lets make a new SF game, people want one of those. That sounds great! Also, lets turn it from an pure on-rails shooter into an adventure game at certain points just to completely fuck the pacing and as a bonus have a shitty and unnecessarily complex control scheme with no alternatives!
>It's been a long time since the last Metroid game, ideas? Maybe we can do something involving the Federation? I KNOW, lets make the whole game a co-op shooter about the federation in robot suits. We'll call it Metroid Prime: Federation Force. >Okay, so how is Samus or the Prime storyline involved? We'll keep talking about her in the story, referencing events that she's done.
>Time for a new Paper Mario game The old games weren't very good, but Sticker Star was great, lets follow that example!
This is the generation that I lost faith in Nintendo and yes, I know they didn't personally make any/all of the above games but I don't care.
Brayden Parker
dkctf splatoon 3d world bay2 w101 mk8 smash pikmin 3 xcx yoshi smm hello? this is without even reaching with other 6 or 7/10s like monster hunter, nsmbu, kirby, and multiplats/the 2 hd zeldas
Caleb Williams
>all those threads about hyrule warriors >decide to give it a try later when you could pirate most WiiU games no problem >mfw playing it
That shit had endless threads and shilling for that? I never been so disspaointed. I don't see the appeal of beating up basically lifeless skyward sword mooks and the occasional boss? Maybe there was more to the game but I wasn't going to stick around.
Zachary Brooks
Your kid has shit taste and is a nostalgiafag
Wyatt Peterson
It's a "love it or leave it" sort of genre.
Brandon Taylor
You know, the way you described it Federation Force doesn't even sound too bad
But sadly it is
Julian Jackson
Bought a Wii U and felt gypped. I kept waiting for the good games but every release was just mediocre shit after mediocre shit with absolutely no third parties to plug the gaps. It has a few gems but not worth owning an entire separate system for. Nintendo constantly shits on their fans and consumers while failing to make anything of substantial value with any regularity.
Switch looks even worse so I'm not falling for that shit again. Same shit except now with even more expensive peripherals, gimmicks, paid online, more DLC and crappy online services (using a phone app for voice chat, what the fuck).
Adrian James
3D World sucks dude. Its the worst 3D Mario. I'll be really happy when Odyssey comes out and people will finally stop pretending 3D World is good
Anthony Harris
They fucked up so bad. It had no games for a year. How can they not have games ready for their own console lauch. They knew it was coming. It's not like it took them.by surprise
It's the same thing with switch. Why is MK8 not ready for launch? It has Zelda yeah but they were already making that and just ported it to switch. Why isn't Splatoon 2 ready for launch? What have nintendo been doing for 3 years?
Jace Collins
But 3D World is good
Julian Peterson
I disagree
Leo Clark
I disagree with your disagreement
Jordan King
I like nintendo games but I was never too big into their playformers but back then they had so much more to offer I hate when people list out games like random thinking everybody is going to eat it up because its nintendo.
Only games worth a shit you listed IMO is splatoon,bay2,w101,xcx and MH
Justin Adams
I personally REALLY wanted a game in the metroid universe where you play as the Federation because I think it would be interesting to play in the Metroid universe without a superpowered alien suit, especially with all the material that the space pirates have lore-wise. What I wanted was something more akin to Halo, not whatever the mess we got is.
Kayden Long
I'm pretty sure its because most Nintendo fans had never played a musou before.
Jace Brooks
>They fucking sat on their hands, shoved their thumbs up their ass, and did nothing
Because their army of fanboys will buy it no matter what. Nintendo isn't stupid, they learned this. Fanboys (including yourself for buying the WiiU) made Nintendo what it is today. I'm not being a dick.
Cooper Watson
But the Wii U sold poorly, so they didn't learn anything good
Kayden Anderson
Your opinion is shit, I just finished 3D World recently (4 stars, fuck 5 stars arbitrary grindy BS) and I find it to be a damn good Mario game. I wouldn't put it up there with SMB3/SMW or the galaxy series but 8/10 I reckon.
Cooper Flores
The Wii was way worse
Aaron Watson
It's very simple, Miyamoto was hoping to use the Wii branding to shill more of his stuff the general market doesn't want.
This system is a reflection of his ego.
Levi White
The Wii has a better library than Wii U
Christopher Ortiz
quantity =/= quality
Wyatt Stewart
Still has a better library. Like 1/3 of the Wii U's library is shovelware.
Aaron Parker
Yet the fanboys are still there with "OMG I'M HYPE FOR SVITCH! YOU JUST HATIRS." That's my point.
As long as they have millions of fanboys, Nintendo don't care. If they did, Switch wouldn't exist.
Adrian Morgan
I hate when people have such a shit opinion. I could give a list full of hits that aren't even mario, zelda and dk shit.
Connor Diaz
Nice pasta, I'm saving it.
Josiah Turner
I'd own one if their localization teams weren't garbage.
Kevin Torres
It's like owning a 3ds when you don't care about pokemon or mario. Nintendo is ass at variety in library, they just rely on a few huge names as crutches.
Dylan James
Yeah, but at least in this case, Hyrule Warriors isn't really a Zelda game, just a musou using Zelda characters. Wii U doesn't even have its own Zelda game.
Charles Moore
Is there a list or image of every worthwhile wii u game?
Nathan Rogers
The WiiU has no chance to succeed, it was too tied up with the Wii and that became a thing everyone avoided because it pandered to casuals for the first 3 years.
Nintendo did it to themselves thinking the Wii would remain the top shit for 10 years.
Jordan Martin
>Super Mario 3D World >Super Mario Maker >Mario Kart 8 >Super Smash Bros >New Super Mario Bros U >New Super Luigi U >Puyo Puyo Tetris >Splatoon >Pokken Tournament >Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze >Bayonetta >Bayonetta 2 >Hyrule Warriors >Xenoblade Chronicles X >Yoshi's Woolly World >FAST Racing NEO >NES Remix
That's all And some of those are not even exclusives anymore
Jordan Richardson
There is nothing wrong with the Wii U. I got many hours of enjoyable gameplay out of it and got a lot of use out of its gimmick, the offscreen play, while laying in bed at night.
The problem was that nobody bought one. Nintendo clusterfucked their marketing and made normies think it was an extension to the Wii. It doesn't deserve the flack it gets, because it served its purpose well for the few people who actually bothered to check it out.
Parker Rodriguez
3ds had lots of shit to offer besides mario and pokemon though. I don't even own a mario game on my 3ds.
Charles Green
people who play monster hunter are subhumans.
Jackson Smith
>it was too tied up with the Wii and that became a thing everyone avoided because it pandered to casuals for the first 3 years. Wow, you must live in some kind of bizzaro world where pandering to casuals doesn't bring financial success.
>Nintendo did it to themselves thinking the Wii would remain the top shit for 10 years. They were the only company that stuck to the 5 year console cycle with the original Wii. Literally 5 years after release they dropped software support like a rock which is why it didn't sell past then.
Ayden Fisher
>Nintendo's naming of the product, marketing of it, and reliance on gimmicks to sell weak hardware
Sounds like the wii.
Christopher Hernandez
>IT IS EVERYONE'S FAULT EXCEPT NINTENDO'S! They made a shit console that couldn't run things that people did not want and had an unwieldy gimmick they expected third parties to develop for. Heck the fact they had no idea how to make a decent online was also hilarious for anyone on the outside.
Nintendo made their own bed.
Tyler Hughes
>Nintendo's naming of the product, marketing of it, and reliance on gimmicks to sell weak hardware And people deny that Nintendo is the apple of game consoles
Kayden Robinson
The casuals moved on and the so did the core fans. That's why the Wii died suddenly around 2010-2011.
Jayden Cooper
Keep moving those goalposts champ.
Parker Bennett
Admittingly more of the wii's is shovelware since that was the entire point of the console but it had more still.
Ethan Parker
Not that user, but is it worth your favorite IP selling well when they rape it's rotting corpse with things like memes and waifus? >fire emblem >no perma death Why do casuals and normies fucking ruin everything. They just can't get good
Jace Taylor
I'd say they have roughly the same percentage of shovelware in their respective libraries. Wii had more shovelware because it was more popular but it had more good games as well.
Nicholas Reed
to be fair the wii u wasn't that bad
all they needed to do to fix it was - have decent specs so third parties dont run away - 3ds ports - not force people to repurchase all their virtual console stuff from the wii - keep making wiimote games - region free - rebrand it after the first year with a name change and get away from that ugly toilet cleaner blue they chose for marketing it would've been fine
in some ways I think the switch is a step backwards for controls, VC, browser, and not allowing two screen play and not allowing the screen to display something when docked like smash bros did
Christopher Hall
The gamepad could do a lot of cool things as seen in nintendoland. The problem is nobody bothered to do any of those cool things. Even Nintendo at best used it for a map or inventory but usually just mirrored the tv screen.
Jace Long
You should blame Nintendo for making games that didn't make people want to buy the system instead of whining about third parties.
The Wii U biggest fault is crappy first party software that failed to get enough attention.
You got it all backward.
Brandon Parker
>- not force people to repurchase all their virtual console stuff from the wii
you stupid retard. They actually didn't. You were able to transfer all your digital Wii purchases free of charge onto your Wii U and play them ... again without any charge at all.
You were then able to also optionally upgrade them to the Wii U versions for like 1 buck.
Now take a look what the competition did. Or even what Nintendo themselves are doing now with the Swotch.
Connor Gomez
>- have decent specs so third parties dont run away
That's a complete no-go right away. Everything Nintendo has done since the Wii has been to keep ballooning dev costs under control.
Grayson Adams
>You were then able to also optionally upgrade them to the Wii U versions for like 1 buck. Do you really think this is a good thing? My roommate just got Gears of War 1-3 for free on his Xbox One because he bought all of them in the past plus the newest one. Charging people for an """""upgrade""""" for 20 year old games is jewish as hell.
Brody Richardson
>Now take a look what the competition did. Steam:Buy something and have it in your account forever. Sony: Cross buy. Thing also in account forever.
You had a point?
Dominic Ward
Nintendo are nominal perfectionists who set a certain standard for their IPs that doesn't allow them to pump out games willy-nilly or experiment too much. Unfortunately, man-hours don't inherently translate to a quality game. The philosophy expressed in pic related has started to fuck them in the past decade or so. Remember the crazy long dev period Star Fox Zero had? First hinted in 2013 or 14 as I recall. All that dev time that could have been spent making good Wii U games and instead we got shit.
That's the other problem with Nintendo, their standards are increasingly out of touch. Iconic franchises like Mario are stale and stagnant (hopefully Odyssey will change this) while Star Fox died to gimmicks. First-party Nintendo games are now hit-or-miss in addition to being far and few between. They can no longer carry an entire console.
Nintendo's solution was to write the Wii U off as a loss and go into overdrive working on the Switch. As a consumer this pisses me off more than anything else. There were next to no new Wii U games in 2016 and they made a lot of decision making (like the premature end of Splatfests) that was obviously designed to fuck Wii U owners over to the Switch's benefit.
I don't use the word "cuck" lightly because it's extremely overplayed, but if you are a Wii U owner and are buying a Switch at launch then you are the definition of a cuck.
Adam Gonzalez
>The problem is nobody bothered to do any of those cool things When this happens literally every god damn time Nintendo comes up with some stupid gimmick then maybe the answer is to stop fucking doing it.
Gabriel Butler
They said the tablet thing was cool in the design phase, then actual tablets became a thing and the U tablet was suddenly not very cool. It probably doesn't help that
Jaxson Lee
>competition >Sony >buy a PS1 classic 1 time >can play it on PS3, PSP, Vita and PSTV
Austin Roberts
>Wii sells Millions because all the casual gamers buy one since smartphones and tablets have basically zero marketshare at this point >Soccer Moms and Grandparents all buy one + Wii Sports/Games and never play it again after 6 months >Casual gamers all migrate to Candy Crush and other phone/tablet games >Nintendo are desperate to get the casual money back >Design a controller that looks like a tablet in the hopes of getting the casual gamers back >It doesnt work
Christian Phillips
It blows my mind, not really actually, how many moms and grandparents bought the Wii and only have Wii sports for it. I also kek at the amount of wiis for sale on eBay because they can't comprehend the idea of depreciation >bought I bought the system and all of these tacky little plastic addons for full price! What do you mean they're worth $2?!
Sebastian Parker
Since graphics havent really changed much on Nintendo consoles since the Gamecube, and have relied on gimmicks. What do you think Nintendos console gimmick will be after the Swich?
Half console, half amazon dash button? Half console, half foldable hot air balloon?
The suspense is killing me!
Mason Campbell
It'll be wearable. Probably just a smart phone attached to an armband.
Jackson Perez
It's optional you whiny faggot
Colton Howard
Could be right actually.
A phone that plays mario, zelda and 100s of d class cooking mama games Nintendophone.
Brandon Walker
>Since graphics havent really changed much on Nintendo consoles since the Gamecube The sad part is, this isn't even that much of an exaggeration. it's because they opted to develop on an overclocked GameCube while other devs had practice making HD games. Even the best looking Wii U games are still meh
Luke Scott
>sadly the 3rd party support idiots were crying for were "Where is my rehashed yearly shit CoD and Sports games?" and not "Where are the unique games and new IPs?" (You) are the reason you don't get 3rd parties.
By the way, the unique games and new IPs are right over there by the platforms with 3rd party support. Unlike you people, their owners actually buy games without a red brand on it. I can name 5 solid multiplats from Wii U's first year that got promptly ignored, two were launch titles even.
Michael Nelson
are the memes and waifus optional too? Literally catering to the lowest denominator
Eli Cruz
>Nintendo are desperate to get the casual money back If that was true their Wii U games wouldn't be designed for the hardcore Nintendo fanboys.
>It doesnt work Which just shows that Nintendo was making games that few people wanted to buy.
Aiden Lopez
This was never about practice, it's about manpower. Nintendo didn't have the teams ready to do high-fidelity HD graphics.
Nathan Sullivan
>If that was true their Wii U games wouldn't be designed for the hardcore Nintendo fanboys. And what do you know, they weren't. Only 2nd parties and hired companies cared about any of that.
Brayden Baker
It's an custom architecture with a shit SDK that's difficult to develop for because it's strangled by the very design of the hardware on top of being underpowered compared to the competition. Keeping dev costs low is what makes Nintendo profitable but there are better ways to make a cheap underpowered console. Like using a tegra chip.
The real problem is miyamoto is an egotistical fuck who doesn't want anything on the system better than what he shits out. See: rareware, argonaut, rockstar.
Charles Foster
>Hey let's make a new 3D Mario game, people want one of those >Let's take away all the level variety and give him a waterpack >Hey let's make a new 3D Zelda game, people want one of those >Let's give it an ugly artstyle, simplify the dungeons and remove 1/3rd of the game >Hey let's make a new 3D Metroid game, people want one of those >Let's give it a horrendous soap-opera narrative with a vapid nu-Samus and pixel-hunt intermissions >Hey let's make a new 3D [anything] game, people want one of those >Let's give it forced waggle since it's on the Wii >Who wants a new Luigi's Mansion or Pikmin? >[crickets] >Too bad you're getting faithful sequels to both
Nintendo have been playing the "It's not AWFUL I guess but I didn't really WANT this" game for generations
Alexander Mitchell
The same thing that will happen to the switch after a year
Luke Reed
>The same thing that will happen to the switch after a year
This. Remember all the initial hype for the first SMT*Fire Emblem trailer? Remember the hype for Megaman Legends on 3DS? The first hype for Zelda coming out in 2015? Games get radically changed, delayed and outright cancelled and you'd be fools to believe half the games announced for this year aren't just fluff.
