Open world games never followed Bethesda, or else they would be full of caves, camps, towns, major chain quests etc.

Open world games followed Ubisoft whether it be AC or Far Cry. Horizon is literally Far Cry.

Because we've had open world games where nothing interacts, nothing matters and it's basically a bunch of seeprate missions with space in between. The worst example of this would be the towers. In zelda, it looks like once you climb on top of a tower, it's simply a vantage point you can choose to use to scout out the surrounding area.

In other games, climbing a tower automatically marks everything for you in a wide radius. I don't feel like I'm actually doing anything.

Nobody was talking about how the original game was so open, and exploring it was so fun and crazy, until Nintendo started telling people it was. No surprise here. The west is obsessed with making the press fawn over it's amazing set pieces and graphics. But when you look past the wow factor and directed content, there's often not a lot of substance.

Japan has a tradition to make gameplay systems feel just right. The first Super Mario Bros have very complex inertia mechanics for example, something to aspire to if you're making a 2d platformer. Only Japan could have conjured up Dark Souls and not just turn it into another generic third person action game.
Zelda is probably the same. Those hitboxes for example.
