Microsoft to purchase Steam for $17bn. Will announce purchase at GDC.
MS buys Steam

Steam is worth much more than 17bn
>17bil
lol
Steam is a privately owned company, dumbass
It was valued at 2 - 4bn in 2011... so yeah, 17bn sounds about right. Google it.
What are you saying, a privately owned company can't be purchased? Who's the dumbass?
Gaben hates Microsoft, so he'd never sell Steam to them.
It means it's not for sale
Also, learn to reply you retard
17bn is a ton of money though. Makes you overlook silly things like hate.
How would you know that? You part of their inner circle? Thought not.
>6 years and the release of several games in their platform INCLUDING Dota2 later
Yeah, I'm sure these values have not changed at all.
The owner can sell a private company whenever they want. Don't be so thick.
Valve is owned by four people I think.
All who would never sell because microsoft couldn't afford.
Microsoft is worth 290bn. Yes they can afford it.
It's not a matter of whether they can or can't afford it. It's a privately owned company, so they could only buy it if the owners are willing to sell it. If they simply say no, that's the end of the story.
Maybe they are selling it you fucking autist.. You don't have to publically announce you are putting your own company up for sale.
No need to sperg out over the simple truth, user.
Yes, it's possible that they suddenly decided to get rid of the cash cow that basically prints them free money. It is however also extremely unlikely.
why would valve ever, ever, sell steam to microsoft
>Wants to make baiting shit post
>does understand economics
>argues like a child about it
Nice try, buddy. Next time take a subject you actually understand tough.
I somehow find this hard to believe. Not only have Valve turned down bigger offers than this in the past, but why would they sell a license to print money?
I'll be back in here after the GDC announcement, just to show you cucks that I'm right.
Putting aside the obvious fact that the OP is a retard... If Microsoft really did manage to buy Steam, it would be the best thing that's ever happened to GOG.
>OP to suck cocks. Will announce 24 minutes ago.
I truly cant's wait.
See you around
Microsoft can't afford Steam.
MS worth $290bn. They can afford it.
so the worst thing to happen with pc gaming
makes sense
Bill Gates can afford ANYTHING
Hope you're man enough to say "you were right".
How much they're worth is something entirely different from how much they can spend.
:^)
If Microsoft did buy Steam, they'd run it into thhe ground in no time at all. They've failed multiple times at trying to get into the PC market, and each time it was entirely their own fault. Can't see them wasting billions on another failed attempt.
I'm pretty sure Gabe would have something against selling it to a company like Microsoft. Then again he might pull a Notch and take his share and fuck off so no one can ever ask him for HL3 again.
They'd probably try to merge it with their shitty Windows 10 store and lose 90% of their customers in the process.
EA is 26Bln
Blizzard is like 16Bln
Sure Sure.
Or take the money and use 5% of it to fully fund HL3
This would be fantastic news. It would finally put the nail in PC gaming's coffin and games could either move to Linux or stop being ported entirely.
We will see at the GDC announcement won't we. I will be back with a screenshot of this thread, just to show you cucks that I'm right.
Fake
Microsoft is worth half a trillion
>he thinks gabe has morals
Anybody who standardizes the use of DRM has no moral fiber to speak of. Gaben is everything he hates and then some.
Is it really? What does it matter when you already have "fuck you" money?
>create a Linux based OS so Microsoft has to fuck itself
>sell software to Microsoft later
uh? I want to say GabeN is a freebeerstallmen but...? He probably isn't
When is the GDC anyway?
Privately owned company can still be bought.
And Steam is not a company, it's a software. Valve is the company that owns Steam.
I don't need to wait for GDC to call you a fucking retard
Steam generates two billion a year, and that's at least because the figure was taken several years ago. You're fucking crazy.
Steam is a digital store front
its not a digital rights managment
steamworks, Denuvo, origin, securom are anti-tamper and digital rights management
>Man writes a made up line of text
>Sup Forums discusses it as if it was a real possibility
The butthurt is gonna flow through you hard...
>steamworks
>steam works
>steam
I didn't really mean it in the moral sense, I meant more about it going corporate. Valve always touts their unusual development practice where they just kinda work on what they want. Microsoft would probably completely get rid of that. I mean, look at Minecraft after Microsoft picked it up.
Gabe's net worth is sitting at $4bil as of this year. His only real asset is half of Valve/Steam, so it's probably worth $8-10bil, $17bil buy price would make sense for it to be enticing.
Dumbass
>Steam is a digital distribution platform developed by Valve Corporation, which offers digital rights management (DRM),
Steam is literally PC gaming for retards and designed from the ground up to remove consumer rights. It's pure cancer. Anybody who supports Steam hates PC gaming.
Steamworks is made by valve and used in almost every game released on steam, but not every game. You can buy DRM-free games on steam.
That doesn't change the facts that you don't know the definitions
Playstation is referred to as a company and brand when its actually a product.
STEAM ITSELF IS NOT A DRM
STEAMWORKS IS
steampowered.com
Valve is the biggest proponent in gaming for Linux though. Taking them out of the game would do more harm than good.
Microsoft is going to buy Sony
Watch you fucking retards, GDC
Suck a fat one. Physical clutter becoming obsolete is the best development one could hope for.
> implying gaining $13 billion in 6 year isn't change.
Twitter worth around $40 billion fyi.
At least someone on here can see sense.
>Playstation is referred to as a company and brand when its actually a product.
No?
>That doesn't change the facts that you don't know the definitions
No, you're the retard who doesn't understand. If somebody bought Steam, they'd get Steamworks because nothing on Steam would even function without it. You're the retard here. Felt the need to say that twice because you're that fucking retarded.
steamworks is part of steam.
Can you imagine what would happen if Microsoft gained control of Steam?
We'd immediately lose access to most of our games ffor some bullshit reason.
The program would be flooded with ads.
There would be a subscription fee to remove the ads.
You'd need a gold account to play any game online.
It would become Windows 10 exclusive and it would try to forcefully install Win 10 on your PC everyday.
Microsoft would harvest and sell any data they could about you.
It'd be terrible.
okay but it's not mandatory? you can release DRM free on steam. many people and publishers choose to.
no sony is a the company nobody in the history as reffered to a product of a company as the company. playstation is a division of sony but not a company. you just fucked up admit it and stop trying to deflect
>Suck a fat one. Physical clutter becoming obsolete is the best development one could hope for.
While you could make an argument for this(I disagree personally but whatever) you shouldn't use Steam as an example of this being a positive. DRM free digital exists. Steam is cancer.
>lose 90% of their customers in the process.
To what - Origin? It's time to admit that no matter how much they fuck up, people are dependent on Steam at this point. See: YouTube for another example of people not abandoning a ubiquitous platform with well documented shitty practices.
GUYS NINTENDO IS GONNA BUY ATLUS
>many people and publishers choose to
That's quite an exaggaration.
>nothing on Steam would even function without it
There are DRM free games on steam. There are few of them, but they are there. You can literally download them and just copy paste on another machine without Steam and they would work. You are wrong and don't know the definitions, end of story.
But steam sells DRM free games.
>Valve is the biggest proponent in gaming for Linux though.
>have to install known spyware that's not open source to play your DRM-locked games
>a good thing for linux gaming
>Steam is literally PC gaming for retards and designed from the ground up to remove consumer rights. It's pure cancer. Anybody who supports Steam hates PC gaming.
fucking killyourself
if it wasnt for steam everyone would still be struggling with 6 DVDs, 10 different activation methods and limited installations (AS IN LOOK AT GAMES FOR WINDOWS LIVE)
steam is worth much more then $17b
and gabe doesnt like what microsoft has become since he left
so i doubt he would cut them such a nice deal
literally off the top of my head every paradox and every frictional game. that's a huge number of games.
OP is a lying piece of shit
but how is GoG Galaxy?
generates 2 billion what? profit? revenue? nobody here knows what the fuck they are talking about. the throw around numbers they read online and have no clue of their actual meaning.
>insists I'm wrong
>actually implying somebody would buy steam without steamworks
>literally this fucking retarded
fuck that shit I can already predict Microsoft would lock steam to windows 10 the same way they force intel and amd.
What percentage of games on Steam is DRM-free?
every game that runs on linux is drm free
If it weren't for Steam you'd have to spend 30$ on a bluray drive and have to be able to a read a CD key. Real difficult. It would suck to actually own your games, wouldn't it?
Some of us like having presentable furniture and not an awful nerd cave with full shelves of games.
They're not
delete Sup Forums
This seems legit, guys. I can see Valve selling off their biggest cash cow to Microsoft for completely arbitrary reasons. I have no doubt this is going to happen.
Some of us are homeowner's who can spare a room for video games. Not everybody has a large living space like me, that's fine. There's nothing inherently wrong with digital. I never said that.
boy i sure do love stacking discs that could break at any point.
Except for all the ones that aren't.
Steam is a private company, it doesn't need to disclose the amount of revenue and profit they make.
That said this is the worst bullshit rumor ever.
Why would Microsoft simply buy Steam the storefront?
It would make much more sense to buy Valve the company instead of just the literal thing hat makes Valve valuable in the first place which they aren't going to spin-off and sell.
What's left after they sell steam? Their game dev studio doesn't even make games anymore.
VR meme division?
>GabeN used to work for Microsoft
>starts valve, steam
>reports back to Microsoft overlords and sells out steam to Microsoft
yall niggas got played
I don't know why are insisting on the fact that anyone is going to buy anything separatly, this is beyond the argument. The argument was that Steam by itself is DRM, which is wrong. There's a system Valve uses for steam that is used as DRM, pretty much every game uses it, but it's not, I repeat. it's not part of the steam just because there are games that can be sold without it. If it was part of steam there would be impossible to sell games without it. This is not true. Almost every dev uses it because they have the choice, but the system itself is on the upper level from the storefront, which is steam itself. No matter how much you twist an argument with your "what ifs" that doesn't change the fact that you don't know the definitions.
> search thread

b-but it's subtle and i'm a cool rational person who likes to talk about his garbage interests with anyone who'll pretend to be polite at me
>Manly Tears lifting a GCN game
Where is the proof?
>t. stupid retard that doesn't know how to store his shit
