If System Shock 2 was a horror game they wouldn't have put techno music in it

System shock had an awesome atmosphere and gameplay

I don't know. People are stuck on "music must compliment the mood", but SS2 got that right by just playing the music you would expect to play at that location. It's the juxtaposition between the normal music and what's actually happening that unnerves you and puts you off balance to expect anything. There are no obvious stings to indicate danger, for example.

Nah Alien Isolation was better

Play the game with the music off, its really spooky.

all three of those games are wildly different with how they handle horror, though

In terms of atmosphere and immersion it's isolation with system shock coming a close second. Dead space 1/2 are great games but doesn't compare to the either of the other games in making you feel alone and against all odsst

Mass Effect 1 has some neat side missions where you have to explore abandoned ships, and realized the whole crew went crazy. Was pretty spooky for a non horror game.

Bad idea since some of the music is really spooky as well, not all of it is techno.

Because the Med Sci sector isn't supposed to be scary.

>SS2
>scary

NAH

>Horror games need to be scary

It's the same type of game as event horizon is film
..which isn't meant to be scary

ME2 investigating ghost town precollector arrival was seriously creepy

...

next you gonna tell me comedies don't need to be funny

>18 years later
>No sound design in any video game has come close

Yeah that totally not dated techno score really gave me the creeps

Ah so you're an idiot. Fair enough.

Horror means horrific. Which doesn't mean scary.
It means horrifying, gore, supernatural, alien, unsettling, dread, despair.
Even those pesky jumpscares everyone seems to hate has a place in horror, because they are startling.

How the fuck is that movie not scary after the half point? That video recording is one of the scariest horror movie moments ever.

This

A:I was a proper horror game. SS2 and DS1 were fun but they were something different.

he's talking about the sound effects, not the music.
and I agree, I bought the game on release day and always thought that the techno music was way too much.

the ambient stuff is fucking awesome though.

DS 1 and 2 were great. You weren't running, you weren't hiding, you were eviscerating the monsters with mining tools. It was metal as fuck and manly.

Ayy lmao Isolation

A:I dragged on too long and didn't do a good enough job of allowing the player to trick the alien into attacking other enemies. Even in firefights, the alien would immediately hunt you down if you made any noise, including running; ignoring the people shooting at it/each other.

I think the game would have been much better if the game was free roam, with maybe a few metroidvania elements to gate certain content.

OP you're asking people who havent played system shock 2, maybe not even dead space just ayylmao isolation

I played all 3 dead space, system shock 2 (not the first one) and Isolation and still think that Isolation is the better game

>play System Shock 1
>realize those numbers on the wall probably mean something
>eh fuck writing, I'll just look it up in a guide later
>they're randomly generated per playthrough
Serves me right, I suppose

>die
>get revived
yeah best horror game right there

You're forgetting that System Shock 2 was released in 1999 and Dead Space was released in 2008.

Yeah but they only got to MedSci, then stopped playing. Therefore the whole game was techno.

haven't played Isolation, is it really too long for its own good?

1. ss2
2. dead space 2
3. dead space extraction
4. doom 3

never played a scary jap horror game set in space i don't think

We used to play System Shock in my friend's basement. Would turn the lights off and shit was pitch dark. Scared the crap out of us.

Aw now that I think about it, we used to play this game with like, five or six of us. The basement was split down the middle with a wall and there were two doors to the back section which was unfinished. Used to play manhunt shit in the pitch blackness down there. I miss being a kid. ._.

Dead Space didn't feel more horror to me than Duke Nukem. Having monsters alone is not enough. The atmosphere was never oppressive, I never felt in any danger.

I ignored the first two floors, I was so lazy to go back and check that I just tried every number until it worked

Fun fact: Dead Space was originally supposed to be System Shock 3, but when the devs saw Resident Evil 4 they were really impressed and redesigned the whole game. But you can still see similarities to System Shock in Dead Space.

On the same note, Lightning Returns was put tugether from the corpse of never released Valkyrie Profile 3.

My childhood was not so cool. One day at 8:30 am parents come in and tell me they are getting a divorce.

Such is life of a Sega fan.

How do I unfuck the 360 gamepad controls for Deadspace on PC?

Shit is all kinds of messed up, which is weird because I originally played in on 360 and it was fine.

You can't. Sorry. I think there was a way to make them less shitty but it would still be shit.

>never played a scary jap horror game set in space i don't think
Dino Crisis 3?

Just stopping by to say that alien isolation was a boring piece of shit. Overrated as fuck and not even scary.

Need isolation to be implemented into VR

You could check pcgamingwiki to see if they have a fix. The pc port of Dead Space is kinda fucked in a few areas.
