There were cheaper DVD players but anything less and you're getting into composite out only chink shit. Most Bestbuys and other electronic stores didn't even carry them.
Games were pretty meh otherwise. PS1 was better.

You're telling me I get a DVD player and a next-gen console, all in one conveniently priced unit? That was a pretty serious bargain in 2000. Remember, most PCs at the time couldn't read DVDs.

My 99 bucks player featuring SCART RGB and playing literally everything from MP3s to VCDs, CDs with pirated DivX-AVIs on them and of course all DVD region-free, while completely ignoring fast-forward locks and other bullshit.
So-called "good" DVD players, which still did never cost more than a PS2 had much less features. In fact the PS2 was the DVD player with fewest features and only played PAL DVDs.
