Will you like it because you like 999? Probably not, they're 2 different games. In fact Steins;gate is barely a game. Though Steins;gate is a really solid story if you like Japanese culture and sci-fi dramas. It's one of my favourite series and while it's sequel isn't as good as it's predecessor it's leagues better than ZTD

They have similar plot elements like traveling through numerous timelines, using scientific theories, fucked up moral choices etc etc but one's a mystery escape story while the other is an Illuminati time traveling story. I prefer S;G's plot to 999 and you'd probably enjoy one if you liked the other but they are different beasts.

Why not? The anime is one of the best I've ever seen. I watched it before the VN and I think I would've gotten bored with the slice of life shit in the beginning if I wasn't already invested in the characters.

The slice of life bullshit is undoubtedly a hog to go through but the anime botched a lot of key scenes like Suzuha's letter while removing scenes like Nae's witnessing. Not to mention that it's a pretty ugly anime.

I'm one of those people who always goes to the source material when I like something just because that's usually the case. However I do think the anime does a great job of getting you into the series.

If you've got a Vita was a 3.60 firmware you can play both Steins;Gate and Zero on it.(though Zero is essentially a modified version of the japanese game with the english assets added to get round the whole 3.61 thing)

I did this with Zero as it runs like shit in Wine, so yeah, perfectly fine.

If however you are hoping it will have puzzle solving mechanics like 999 did then you will be disappointed. It is a pure VN with some player input.

Regardless it is a fantastic VN, just don't expect the same glory and shine from it's sequel 0 though.

I do like the slice of life now that I know the characters. As I said watching the anime first made it much more enjoyable since I had a reason to be interested in all the bullshit the characters did everyday.

Umineko wasn't good, but it was a hell of a ride.

I still haven't watched the anime despite having played the VN, not sure if I should or not.

the game is japanese audio no matter what, by default the torrent has english text and those extra files are for playing with japanese text. the softsubs mod uses the video files from the japanese version and applies subs while they're playing instead of using the hardsubbed videos from the english version, which were lower quality.

Umiineko was a clusterfuck with an amazing soundtrack that just seemed to keep escalating the more messed up things got.

As for the anime, it's actually one of the better VN adaptations I've seen. Both the dub and original VAs do a great job with it and while it doesn't cover absolutely everything, it's interesting to see Okabe's actions from an outsider's point of view.

I will never not be baffled by the idea that they made this lighthearted until the end where it gets fucking stupid with it's drama slice of life harem bullshit and then go "let's now make a game where the harem protagonist falls into a new world, loses everyone he has ever cared for multiple times to vicious aliens, often times dying in horrific and gorey ways. This is something we are doing now."

I will also never understand games that add a harem element and then don't have a harem ending.

I'm fairly certain the devs were getting drunk as balls in some lowtier pub and thinking how their game was going to be just like every other harem romance game, and then the one very drunk guy in the corner goes "how about aliens and mechas?" Next day, the guy gets promoted to lead writer.

Sigma > Junpei and it has better puzzles than 999, story being better or not is arguable though.

They also streamlined the time travel mechanic which makes it much less frustrating to get all the endings. Although I understand why they didn't in 999 since there was a reason for it to be hidden at first.
