I don't mind the archetype itself, but I hate that it's so widespread. Actually, even then it's not that bad. I wouldn't care if every series had a yamato nadeshiko, if nearly every series didn't also make one the main girl.

In Ikaruga's defense, at least her overall popularity doesn't really affects the outcome of the games themselves.

I think it's silly to dislike yamatos in general because your favorite hasn't been chosen, but when it goes to the point where they acknowledge their popularity to the point of milking that character then we have a problem.

I understand. Yamatos are considered boring by the West, but Japan is more traditional than we are.

Part of the problem with them is they rarely have much substance or personality beyond their archetype. That happens because the more defined by the archetype they are, the more Japan likes them. As a result more interesting characters are often shafted in favor of seeing them being perfect waifs and nothing else.

Yumi is one of the best examples of this. Remember that whole thing with Haruka's potions affecting everyone but Yumi because she's too 'pure'?
