Why do indie developers always try to make their games so deep and pretentious? Why can't they make normal fun games?

Why do indie developers always try to make their games so deep and pretentious? Why can't they make normal fun games?

Are you asserting that every indie developed game attempts to be deep and pretentious or are we just specifically talking about your image here?

Or are we just starting an undertale thread.

Because normal fun games don't win circlejerk awards.

yea ftl was really deep wasnt it
like maybe you were the bad guy all along

It's a bait thread. I don't even see why people say that Undertale is trying to be "pretentious". I didn't get that feeling at all when playing through it.

Because they usually don't have much programming knowhow to make a proper full functioning game.

Anyway, Undertale is a bad example of what you're saying. It's not really that deep or pretentious

Yeah man fucking Shovel Knight was pretentious as hell.
>you're a knight with a shovel
2deep4me lmoa

I think we're just helping OP complete stage 3 of the UT meme and he just wants a shit-on-the-game thread.

making fun games is hard

making "deep" pixel shit is easy and hip

I has lesbian in it without throwing a tantrum about it. People having normal contemporary values trigger shitlords.

Pic unrelated I guess.

>FTL
>Meatboy
>Isaac
>Gungeon
>All of those porn VNs
>Prison Architect
>Factorio
I don't see it, user.

He digs up treasure but refuses to dig up the past
Bruh
I'm like so woke

Exactly, like UT was fun to play, on top of the story being kinda clever but not 'deep' like some other indie games.

I personally really liked the action oriented battle mechanics, instead of just clicking through menus and praying to the RNG gods.

Actually that would be games from famous companies
See Overwatch

As opposed to what? Metal Gear Solid? Final Fantasy? The Last of Us? They don't try to be deep, I guess.

Breaking the fourth wall and going meta isn't deep, it's just an alternate way of telling an otherwise standard "Hero goes ends up in foreign land, makes friends with locals and defeats big bad" story with some meta (flowey, sans) twists on it.

I know it's a bait thread, but I have literally nothing to do but bite ALL the hooks.

you dont 'try' and be pretentious dummy, you either are or you arent

How is Overwatch pretentious? It doesn't pass itself off as anything but a silly shooter.

Because the licensing requirements for any decent physics engine and/or graphics software costs more than any indie developer can afford.

Broforce best example
the game screams Hillary for prison

...

Both Unity and UE4 could be licensed for a cut from your future sales. It's not the licensing cost, it's the cost of creating a large amount of high quality assets. Hence tons of pixelshit like OP's picture.

>Shitlords

Why do indie [insert literally any genre of entertainment or product here] always try to make their [product] so deep and pretentious? Why can't the just make normal fun [product].

Indie anything winds up pretentious shit.

undertale isn't remotely pretentious, it spells everything right out

pretentious is something like braid

Undertale is the opposite of pretentious. Pretentious makes me think of Yume Nikki clones that try to be deliberately vague and mysterious because their designers mistakenly think having symbolism automatically makes your plot deep. Pretentiousness isn't about the specific content of the game or any particular agenda being driven by the creator in its plot so much as the creator's unwarranted assumption that the audience is supposed to appreciate their amateur grade shit as something much better than it is.

Even if it isn't pretentious (which most times it isn't), indie games are cheap to make and the devs have more liberties to take risks and make their game distinguishable from the standard AAA releases which take zero risks.

>Undertale
>Deep

Nigga it was about basic time travel, Chrono Trigger is deeper.

>undertale
>time travel

what?

I know it's bait but the thought that some people are so used to AAA shit to the point where if any indie dev tries a different idea makes them think of it as "pretentious", really grinds my gears.

i think most people just dont like tumblr furshit but cant really articulate why, so they just say pretentious as a general negative adjective. thats my theory on undermeme anyway

>Time travel
You mean the save file thing?

>10k budget
>wants a game that wins hearts through excessive graphics and design

What is a deep video game, user?

I think you uploaded the wrong OP, here you go

i c wat u did there ;)

genuinely amused, ty user

Is this a bait thread or is Sup Forums still this assblasted about Undertale.

>2017
>Still talking about Undertale.

...

Subverting every rpg expectation isn't deep or clever, it's just satire

Undertale didn't prevail because of the message it told, or the humor it had.

It prevailed because we all want to fuck Goat Mom.

Because between indie game#354 and AAA game with more money spent in merchandising than in the making of it, no one will ever know about the indie game unless for the word of mouth and for that you need something to attract attention.

And Undertale isn't

How can we

RESCUE THIS PRINCE?

I did not find anything pretentious.

Hell even at the end one of the characters basically say something like "I know you've managed to save everyone through kindness and avoid violence down here, but up there not everything is so simple"

It's pretty flat about alot of it's messaging.

oh he reeled you in alright

The whole thing with Sans is a red herring, he thinks RESET and SAVE are a form of time travel but he is wrong.

You can't
You can only forgive

they shoehorned gender and sexuality politics into it and tried to make you feel bad for killing people trying to kill you

Indie game "developers" are talentless losers who can't land a real job in the industry, so they have to resort to being "unique"

b-b-but fictional characters said mean things to me when i killed their loved ones, muh fee-fees

made a character lez despite it having no bearing on the story in a similar fashion to dumbledore's gay reveal

Having some monster people in a video game who want to rub there junk together isn't political.

>shoehorned gender and sexuality politics

Fucking where?
The a yuge 2 whole lesbians? Is that it?

:^)

So?

(^:^)

That doesn't impact the game at all though. It's still a silly shooter and is marketed as such.

Undertale isn't pretentious, you don't know what that word means.

If you want to bait call it childish or something, but calling a video game childish is like calling a stone hard.

Memes and bait aside it's a mediocre game with a 10/10 soundtrack. Toby Fox is definitely a better composer.

Who told you such bullshit?

>That doesn't impact the game at all
and that is exactly why it didnt need to be made into a big deal in the first place

I think the latest Undertale game theory is on to something. Way better than that Ness theory anyways.

It definitely makes sense from a personality stand point with Sans and Papyrus being damn near polar opposites.

not all of us suck e-celeb dick so explain yourself or fuck off

No we don't care

Game Thyroid can fuck off

>Sans is Ness!
>Gets ridiculed
>Cries about it at the beginning of next Undertale video
>My bad, Sans is actually half of Gaster!

This aside, the biggest hole in his theory is that he claims that Sans and Papyrus were born when Gaster fell in his creation, but at the same time claims that Sans was there to assist in making said creation.

>Why do indie developers always try to make their games so deep and pretentious

Because being normal and fun is problematic, pointing out how a game has problematic content and constantly going down a rabbit-hole of shit writing to be pretentious is good and wins awards.

You will never see a modern day goofy and funny character like Dante for that same reason.

He proposed the idea that Sans and Papyrus are the fallout from W.D. Gasters failed experiment. Him getting shattered led to Sans and Papyrus. Then gave evidence as to how they both understand saves, time travel, etc. Also Toby Fox made odd almost pointless patches with dialogue that could lead you to believe Papyrus' special attack is the gaster blaster cow skull thing that Sans and Asriel use that you see in Gasters lab.

Also Toby Fox sent a cryptic message saying neither of them could fix the machine. That could imply Alphys/Gaster or Alphys/Sans, but it's odd for him to give a story detail like that.

It doesn't really matter, but I can see where this one is coming from rather than the pants on head SANS IS NESS theory.
