I played through this game in Japanese and it made me realise something about the language which is absolutely impossible to translate.

When reading Sakurai's dialogue you can see that with her text specifically, certain words which would normally be written in kanji are written using hiragana instead. I though it was to make the game easier at first but when other people used those same words they were written with kanji.
A bit further into the game I ask her what subject she's good at in school and she tells me she's terrible at Japanese and struggles to remember kanji.

It's not really impossible to translate, it just means she's dumb as a brick and probably would use really simple words with no complex vocabulary whatsoever. Like "simple english" wikipedia explanations.

But that's not at all what's happening. She's using the exact same words as everyone else, she's saying them correctly. She just doesn't know how to write them and that's show in the dialogue text.
She's not bad at speaking, she's bad at writing and reading.

If you have any familiarity with japanese, you know that people who use hiragana instead of kanji are generally somewhat illiterate (punks, dumb people) or children, because learning kanji is part of the education process. Struggling to learn kanji is basically the equivalent of struggling with higher education. It's not exactly the same, obviously, but it's very similar.
Another example might be people who misspell words because of their pronunciation.

That sounds closer to it but I don't think that's something you can convey so simply through dialogue alone in English.
If you wrote those words wrong it would look like the game's writer had fucked up.
