Can someone explain to me the appeal of Monster Hunter? It kind of just seems like repeating the same attack over and over for hours on a monster, from what I've played. And then you repeat this until you have enough body parts to make better weapons/armor. Rinse and repeat.
Not trying to shitpost, I'm legitimately trying to understand why people enjoy the series.
Can someone explain to me the appeal of Monster Hunter...
That's the appeal, you fight monsters, get materials, make better armor and weapons to fight harder monsters.
It's one of the most fun games I've ever played.
What yall grinding for?
That's literally MH, I know it's pure padded RNG grind and I wish it wasn't but I can't put it down.
I really hated the grind though.
Before my 3DS died I was trying to solo a Savage Jho for the black blood to finish my X jho armor.
Fucker either killed me first or tanked everything until time ran out.

That's the appeal.
I didn't understand it at first either, then I picked up the game.
It just feels very rewarding. You fight with weapons that feel like weapons ,e.g. a 5 m long sword feels like a 5 m long sword, the monsters are all intricate in their own ways and fighting them always feel like an enjoyable intense struggle especially on harder difficulty, you can have good cooperation with friends/teammates, etc.
It's a game that sounds bland and unappealing on paper but in practice it's fucking amazing
You have to admit we could do without the grind
You fight monsters with other people and the combat's fun. The grind is the perpetual carrot to keep you hooked.
It's a lot like PSO, except with more personal skill and less character skill, squeezing a ton of playtime out of the stone that is not a lot of unique content.
I also think a big part of what makes Monster Hunter good is the pacing of fights. Every encounter has a difficulty curve like a story arc. It starts and gets harder as the monster fights back harder, up until some point where the monster's frenzied and at its climax, then after that it's on the back foot and starts getting slower or running away. It's very different to how most bosses work, and it makes the monsters feel more lively, which is pretty unique in games.
For me it's the simplicity of the combat.
They don't hold your hand and give you numbers, homing, hit/miss rates, or anything overly complicated.
Just you, your weapon, and the monster.
So how well you do is up to you, not due to some magic number in the game that goes up if you hit a Kut-Ku enough times, but you the player understanding all the factors involved in the game and simply playing better.
When you win it's based on your actions, and when you lose it's also on your own hands. Not the games. And I very much enjoy that level of player "agency" for lack of a better term.
Who the fuck gives a fuck about the grind, you silly baby go fuck yourself you piece of shit.
Just finished bug hunting to make a quick sheathe decoration. Trying to put together a hbg set for generations
anyone else looking forward to Dauntless?
Honestly I've never gotten fucked over by the grind. If there's a monster that has a drop I need and it's like 2 or 3%, then I'll team up with some buddies and we'll shitstomp the thing over and over and it's generally a lot of fun.
...granted, the grind does become unbearable with stuff like Dalamadur.
MH really only is addicting if you end up really connecting with a weapon. If you don't I could easily see you dropping the game after awhile.
Most of the replayability comes from getting better at fighting monsters with your favorite weapon, not the grinding. Most weapons have one or two optimal armor combos that can be obtained after a little while, and after that it's just about mastering your weapon and styling on monsters.
The wash rinse repeat thing kind of ties in with how rewarding it is to finally git gud with a weapon. The only way you can git gud is by learning each and every monster in and out with a weapon so that no matter what you face you always know what you should be doing. Fighting a Hyper monster in the higher ranks and blocking or evading every attack feels so god damn good in the end.
This for me too. Styles ruined the series
It's one of the few reasons I could never pick up a swax. Shits damage but has the simplest moveset in the game and zero diversity as axemode never gets used, meaning your journey of getting good with it lasts like 10 hours
>swax. Shits damage but has the simplest moveset
have I been playing the wrong game
I'm talking specifically gen now, sorry.
Beforehand it just had a simple moveset without the reward of stupid damage.
I grabbed the .cia and gave Mon Hun Generations a whirl, honestly couldn't see the point either. Tried 3 separate times to get into it but I was bored as fuck. I don't really get into grindy games since I feel like they're just wasting my time. It most likely was made for those that are into that sort of thing.
Styles let you do the same thing you fucking faggot, they just changed the moveset
in the first part of the game you can literally just run through the first 3 stars of quest monsters with your first green sharpness weapon
at most you'll have to beat a monster 3 times to get the stuff you need to upgrade a weapon to a reasonable level
it only gets grindy later in the game
hey guys remember relic weapons
A big part of it for me is that you are forced to aim your attack, even encouraged to hit specific spots as opposed just auto-locking on and strafing. Monsters random attacks hit hard enough to matter and you'll need to watch and react carefully to their animations as a result.
It sounds so basic but so many games lack those things in an effort to sand themselves down to an effortless, frictionless experience. Just tap a button to stay locked on, mash some buttons and watch your character automatically, magnetically slide across the floor to connect their hits. MH isnt the hardest game ever, but thank fuck its not that numbingly easy.
the monhan no erohon doujins would not exist without monster hunter so it is a very important and good game series
only good opinion in this thread desu
relics in general were just baaad, so are styles and arts. I hope they just build MH5 with minimal gimmick.
you hunt monsters
I really don't get why you're having a hard time understanding this
If you have to ask, you'll never know.
the challenge and the game has the best example of gear and self progression.
