Vagrant Story, a fucking masterpiece.

If you have to play any PSX JRPG, make it Vagrant Story.

Top rightr is a middling masterpiece that you either love or hate
Bottom left has absolutely butchered translation to the point that google translate would've been better
Bottom right is an amazing game and there's quite literally none other like it

Vagrant Story has one of the best written scripts in gaming and arguably the best cutscene direction the industry ever had until recently.

I was actually thinking about starting Chrono Cross next since I loved Trigger and heard this game is better. Why should I pick Dragoon instead?

Dragoon. Really liked it.

Vagrant Story is arguably the best of the bunch in all categories, it's not a perfect game but it was a really all around high quality game for the time with a unique concept behind it.

Xenogears is basically an unfinished VN cosplaying as an RPG with tons of blatant /m/ homages(read bad ripoffs), great mechanical designs, nice music and shitty gameplay sessions once in a blue moon.

Chrono Cross suffers from the same mistakes Chrono Trigger did, piss easy, checkpoint endings instead of real nonlinearity, most of which are joke endings and so so pacing. Great production value and an effort in being somewhat mechanically unusual even though it ripped off most of its mechanics from other games while making them somehow worse, amazing cast with tons of party members, amazing setting and lush world, great music.

Legend of Dragoon is a mediocre RPG in everything it does but you'll probably be yelling HARPOON!/BLAYZING DAINAMAOOOOOO!/SUMMON FOHR GAHDS and so on because of the extreme cheesiness, it's kind of a cult game really and not offensively bad. Lavitz is best boy.

i would say the more you love Trigger the less you'll like Cross but maybe that was just me.

Not him but from what I understand most people who like trigger hate cross and vice versa.

Honestly I'd recommend Xenogears over both especially if you're into mecha, game is still great even if you aren't though. Legend of Dragoon is a pretty good rpg, and I remember it had some nice battle mechanics for the moves that made the combat feel a little more engaging. LoD isn't a 10/10 game and most people would say a lot of stuff about it is pretty average, but it's a fun ride.

Vagrant Story definitely has a better story than LoD, and LoD doesn't deserve lowest spot in gameplay.

I don't remember any game that had good cutscene direction as Vagrant Story

Not sure if this is bait, but we live in the same universe where suikoden 2, breath of fire 3/4, final fantasy 7/9/tactics, star ocean 2, legend of legaia, saga frontier, valkyrie profile, lunar 1/2, dragon quest 7 and digimon world existed.

Now that I'm replaying it after not touching it for twelve years, I think the story wasn't that special. Still, it was cool as shit how (actual ending spoiler)you ended becoming the bearer of an ancient, evil power, saving the world from the people planning to misuse said power.
Still my second favorite Playstation era game, only below Valkyrie Profile.

VS was unironically actual Kino.
Especially the opening sequence.
Shame it was ruined by a shitty translation.

They are all great and shit on modern overhyped and paid off 6/10 trash games like BotW easily.
No matter what you choose, you will choose right.

I remember my mind being blown away at seeing how the low poly models had facial expressions, something even Metal Gear Solid failed to achieve.

It was a technical wonder.
Especially how they simulated lighting by the use of cleverly coloured textures instead of actual lighting.
God knows how much they worked on that for it to look that good.
